Mirth and matter
Barriere, Alexandre ; KORČÁK, Jakub (advisor) ; NEUMANN, Julius (referee)
This thesis is based on the author?s experience of directing J. Ford, Th. Dekker, and W. Rowley?s play The Witch of Edmonton (1621) in Divadlo DISK in February 2012 as a final performance in his Directing Master Studies at the Theatre Faculty. What is at stake in reviving such a little-known play of the Jacobean era, and performing it in Czech Republic? Can a text written as a reaction to a precise event (a real witch trial) and built as a quasi-documentary depiction of the society of the time, within the aesthetic codes of the time, be relevant material for a lively performance today? This thesis argues that yes, and that The Witch of Edmonton can actually be the starting point of what can be ?political theatre? in a form not only belonging to a long tradition of committed entertainment (the play?s prologue promising us ?mirth and matter?), but especially relevant to today?s audiences and artistic stakes. The first part of the thesis is a detailed contextual analysis of the play, the historical period in which it was written, the conditions of performance of the time, the material it is based on and the way it was dramaturgically built as ?political?. The second part focuses on the author?s analytical attempts to extract the text from its historical context, in particular through comparative history and history of ideas and using the concepts of Brecht?s epic theatre, depicting also how this research served as a preparation for the concept of his performance, a concept that is then explicated in detail. The third and last part is a short account and reflection about the rehearsal process and its outcome from the director?s point of view, making a final statement on the achieved practical work.

Farmakoterapie bolesti
Corquaye, Theodora Korkor ; Trejtnar, František (referee) ; Melicharová, Ludmila (advisor)
Basically pain is a normal reaction of the body to harmful stimulus - inflammation, trauma, etc. We all have certainly experienced it in our lives. Pain in its own way serves as a warning and a beneficially important signal to defend the body against any harmful effects. Under certain circumstances, however, the pain becomes a cause of suffering to the patient - this applies especially to tumor pain, but also any chronic pain, i.e., long- term. Today it is known that pain is not just a signal that something is wrong, but that pain is itself a disease.

Márföldi, Nicole ; Dufková, Vlasta (advisor) ; Grauová, Šárka (referee)
The present thesis, "Masculine and Feminine View of the Colonial War (António Lobo Antunes and Lídia Jorge)" concerns the peculiarity of the masculine and feminine view of the colonial war in Portuguese colonies in Africa. This thesis focuses on two world-wide known novels: Os cus de Judas by António Lobo Antunes and A costa dos murmúrios by Lídia Jorge. The aim is to reveal that the standpoint was influenced by different social status that women and men held in Salazarian Portugal and in the colonial war itself. The introductory section is devoted to a brief summary of the Portuguese history which had a major impact on the contemporary national identity. The era of the Estado Novo, the Colonial War and the Carnation Revolution was outlined. The literary situation in Portugal after the Revolution was also shortly observed. The main part began with the introduction of António Lobo Antunes & Lídia Jorge and listed out their principal writings, concentrating primarily on Os cus de Judas and A costa dos murmúrios. Afterwards the focus turns to the different position of the women and men in the colonial war, comparing how it influenced their respective lives. The theatre of Ramón María del Valle-Inclán
Gojda, Petr ; Fousek, Michal (advisor) ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (referee)
This work, The theatre of Ramón del Valle-Inclán, studies the dramatic literature of an author who creates mostly in the first quarter of the twentieth century, i.e. in the period of the first reform of the theatre. During the first chapters we analyse our concept of drama as a literary piece, see it's characteristics and it's evolution in the modern creation. We end up saying that a modern dramatist leaves behind the clasicist model of his art, where the author's opinions and points of view step aside before those of his lively characters. Nevertheless he conserves and maybe even emphasizes the plurality of perspectives that the dramatic genre offers to him. And so even in Valle-Inclán where the plurality inside his dramas unites to the plurality of different dramatic genres in the totality of his dramatic art. The recreation of the traditional genres from farce to tragedy serves well to express the artistic points of view about the contemporary Spanish situation.

The process of religious conversion and its effect in everyday life
Vynohradnyková Gaydečková, Vanda ; Tuček, Milan (advisor) ; Kandert, Josef (referee)
The thesis compiles and comments upon the results of a qualitative research focused on the process of religious conversion. The research is based on a series of semi-structured interviews conducted with young converts who decided to join the Roman Catholic church; the subjects are members of the congregation of one (anonymous) church in Prague. Main focus topics included their approach to religion/faith and its evolution in connection with the changes the respondents experience in their everyday lives, their authentic feelings and experiences. The results of the survey are not aimed to be easily generalised and applied to the general population - instead, the work aims to reveal deeper connections and relations which could be employed in future research.

Rahel Levin Varnhagen - a significant female personage in the beginning of the 19th century in Berlin
Ondráčková, Hana ; Stromšík, Jiří (referee) ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor)
This graduate thesis is about Rahel Levin Varnhagen, a distinguished woman living at the turn of the 18th to 19th centuries. The work is divided into three parts: the first attempts to capture the nature of the political and social environment in Prussia and to underscore the circumstances which contributed to the evolution of this German state into one of the dominant European powers while enabling arts and culture to flourish. Special attention is given to the situation of Jewish people in the midst of a Christian society while gradually penetrating the literary world. The final chapter summarizes the role of culture and society in the capital city of Prussia, Berlin, which was evolving into a major European capital. The second part examines the phenomenon of salon culture. The evolution of this culture is described with special emphasis on Rahel (Levin) Varnhagen's salon. At the same time a critical evaluation of this cultural phenomenon is attempted, a phenomenon often idealized as an environment in which all participants were equal, regardless of belief, origin or gender. The third part is dedicated to the subject "Rahel Levin Varnhagen in the context of German Romanticism" and concerns itself with the current state of research about this personality. Previous studies emphasized the social and...

Malaria: the global challenge
Nicholson, Ashley ; Dáňová, Jana (advisor)
More than half the world's population is at risk from malaria, with up to 500 million cases each year and more than one million deaths directly resulting from the disease. Those at highest risk from the disease are people living in endemic areas, travelers to endemic areas, small children and pregnant women. Malaria is a constant risk to the overall health of the global population. Treatment of malaria depends on the species of infecting parasite, the area where the infection was acquired and its drug resistance status, the clinical status of the patient, any co-morbidities, pregnancy, drug allergies or other medications taken by the patient. Proper treatment of malaria will shorten its duration, prevent complications and help to avoid the majority of deaths. Currently the best available treatment is a combination of drugs known as artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs). This therapy works rapidly and has little or no resistance to date. In order to protect against the development we must combine drugs with different mechanisms of action against the same stages of the parasite. Malaria prevention includes vector control, chemoprophylaxis use and the future possibility of vaccine use. Vector control is achieved with the use of insecticide treated mosquito nets and indoor residual spraying of...
