Specificity of the Anglo-Saxon and continental understanding of corporate governance
Balounová, Hana ; Borkovec, Aleš (advisor) ; Hraba, Zdeněk (referee)
The specificity of the anglo-saxon and continental understanding of corporate governance The goal of my thesis is to characterise specifics of anglo-saxon and continental corporporate governance with regard to the different historic background, capital markets` development degree, theoretical issues, shareholder structure, methods of investment funding and the organizational structure models in both of these legal cultures. The scope of the research is focused only on comparison of two systems and concepts of the corporate governance rather than overall description and analysis of its every single aspect. Second part of this paper is dedicated to the takeover bids issue, as one of the external aspects of corporate governance. Subchapter 1.1 is introductory and endeavours to define the concept of corporate governance. Subchapter 1.2 examines the history and first ocuurence of the corporate governance issues that is very closely connected to the so called "separation of ownership and control" phenomenon. As far as the relationship between shareholders and management of the company is concerned, subchapter 1.3 deals with the agency problem in relation with its costs. The comparison of shareholder structure and company funding method is the core question of the subchapter 1.4. Following part describes...

Human biological variation in the light of certain morphological and molecular biological traits.
Kujanová, Martina ; Černý, Viktor (advisor) ; Sládek, Vladimír (referee) ; Munclinger, Pavel (referee)
This doctoral thesis is submitted in the form of science publications with impact factor and presents human biological variation in two different ways. The first part is the study of phenotype variation focused on the degree of limb bones bilateral asymmetry. Besides genetic and hormonal factors asymmetry may develop as a response to biomechanical and to environmental factors influencing the individual/population. Therefore this trait can be considered as a measure of person's living conditions, health or environmental stress of different origin or exa- mine the effects of behavioral distinctions as sexual division of labor and diffe- rences in subsistence strategy. The submitted publication (Kujanová et al., 2008) is based on samples of two diachronic populations (medieval and recent) from Bohe- mia with different expected levels of health/environmental stress. The study is fo- cused especially on these aspects that may be indicative of various stresses, such as malnutrition or other nonspecific factors influencing health of persons living in the studied populations. According to the results we propose that bilateral asymmetry observed in the diachronic populations showed some differences supporting the theory that the medieval population was not subjected to as highly stressful condi- tions as the...

Comparison of Outputs from the Software ALOHA and TerEx in Dispersion Modelling of Selected Hazardous Substances
HENDRYCH, Adam
In the context of an increasing production of industrial toxic substances (TIC; Toxic Industrial Compound), the risk of accidental release of hazardous substances is growing in spite of the gradual implementation of safer technological processes and safety improvement measures. To mitigate the consequences of chemical accidents or to prepare preventive protective measures before the accident, it is necessary to know or at least estimate the course of accidents. In particular, it applies to the range of traumatic events and fatal accidents. One of the tools that can express the impact of accidents is modelling programs. This diploma thesis presents a comparison of outputs from two special types of software ? a foreign program the ALOHA and the TerEx developed in the Czech Republic. The purpose of the thesis was to indicate theoretical aspects related to gaseous toxic substances diffusion in the ground atmospheric layer and to describe modelling of their ill effects range. To achieve this objective, scientific literature and consultation with experts were used. The practical section of the thesis aimed at determining to what extent the results of both programs differ when initial conditions were identical. To achieve this goal, the intercomparison of outputs (e.g. hurtful concentration range) of the two programs that provided results for the same input data sets (type and quantity of hazardous substances, environmental temperature, wind speed, degree of cloud cover, weather stability class, type of ground surface) was used. After the assessment of the comparison it is possible to generalize the results stating that the software ALOHA compared to the TerEx is more conservative, which means that the ALOHA software provides longer anticipated ranges of danger. Therefore, it depends on the user (the person responsible ? crisis manager, intervention commander, mayor of the village), which approach they select or recommend ? to prepare a greater or a smaller area for a possible accident (to ensure public awareness, to implement technical measures to mitigate the impact of that accident, to assess the amount of financial resources, etc.). As a subsequent step it would be appropriate to verify the theoretical results experimentally, by field testing, which would be conducted under the same meteorological conditions under which the modelling was made by the mentioned programs. This would thus confirm the legitimacy of the special software use for the purpose of estimating the range of negative effects of chemical accidents.

Financial Analysis - Barum Contitnental spol. s r.o.
Lych, Yana ; Kopkáně, Heřman (advisor) ; Tyll, Ladislav (referee)
The main objective of this work was to assess the financial health of Barum Continental spol. s r.o. Analysis was conducted for the period 2002 - 2007, with an emphasis on the last 3 years. Primarily were used elementary analysis methods, which work with the extensive and intensive indicators. Thesis monitors the development of key indicators, assesses whether the company effectively manage its working capital and cash flow, whether it achieves sufficient profitability, effectively controls the area of liquidity etc. Modern methods, which enable to predict future development, were used as well(Altmanova Z-score, index IN05 and EVA). To assess the overall prosperity of the company we should concern the analysis of macroeconomic situation, which the firm must adapt.

Pharmacognostic study of Alnus spp.
Chlebek, Jakub ; Jahodář, Luděk (advisor) ; Karlíčková, Jana (referee)
Charles Univerzity in Prague, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of Pharmaceutical Botany and Ecology Degree work term: Pharrnacognostic study of Alnus spp. Student: Jakub Chlebek Abstract The degree work Pharmacognostic study of radix Alnus spp. consists of theoretical and experimental part. Theoretical part contains botanical characteristic of the three home species of Czech Republic (Alnus glutinosa, Alnus incana, Alnus rugosa), phytochemical review of the compounds of the genus Alnus and their biological acivities. Experimental part deals with phytochemical and biological study of the roots of Alnus glutinosa. Dried roots of the black alder (Alnus glutinosa) were extracted with Me2CO-H2O (7:3). Final extract was chromatographed over test silica gel colum using a MeOH- CHCl3 gradient (0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 100 %). Elution gave 36 fractions. All the separations were analysed by TLC (hexane-EtOAc MeOH, 2:2:1). The sterols were detected in the fraction No. 7 by TLC, melting point and GC-MS. Major present sterols were β-sitosterol, β-sitostanol, minor sterols campestanol, campesterol. Fractions No. 10 and 19 were analysed by HPLC. Antioxidant activity of the fraction No. 19 was measured with DPPH radical and was low (EC50 0.32 mg/mL). Test silica gel colum experience were used in analysis on...

Frequentist and Bayesian inference
Shykhmanter, Dmytro ; Vilikus, Ondřej (advisor) ; Hebák, Petr (referee)
The thesis provides both theoretical and practical comparison of frequentist and Bayesian methods of statistical inference. Comparing of these two concepts begins with describing the philosophy of probability theory. Also is introduced the problem of determinism as well as three main probability interpretations. Statistical inference is a process of making general conclusions based on a given evidence. The frequentist statistics uses the observed data as an only evidence for its conclusions, while the Bayesian one is based on an idea that the subjective degree of belief can be also used for these purposes. Why should one disregard to his experience, knowledge or even intuition? Often happens that results of statistical data analysis are useless in sense that they come out not as it is expected. This situation is illustrated when there are a number of ski resorts which are graded on five star scale. If we look to the top ten, we will find that some of those should not belong there, though the data says they do. Generally the top positions are occupied by the objects with fewer reviews, while those with more reviews get lower average score. Bayesian data analysis methods enable to eliminate this kind of problem. Based on a prior information about the whole data set, every ski resort would get a fair score and as the result, the model would better represent the quality of the each resort based on the respondents' reviews.

Manipulation of children in the prose of Aldous Huxley and George Orwell
Linhart, Marek ; Clark, Colin Steele (referee) ; Wallace, Clare (advisor)
The focus of this thesis are two of the most prominent specimen of utopian literature, namely George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Despite the fact that Brave New World, which was published in 1932, predates Nineteen Eighty-Four by seventeen years and was written in a quite different social and political climate, both these books share many important elements. While depicting vastly different societies with diverse structures of power distribution, they both express certain fears and worries that their respective authors had about the future of civilisation, which is why they were chosen as primary texts for this thesis. More specifically, the main area of discourse is going to be the treatment of children and their relation to the state as depicted in these books. In this field, both Orwell's Oceania and Huxley's World State share the same objective, which is to turn children and the young generation in general into an obedient tool to be at the system's disposal. This aim is very prominent for many reasons in both books, but the results are the same; children willingly submit themselves fully to the state and become one of the major means the state possesses to achieve its goals. The degree of control over children both in Brave New World and Nineteen Eighty- Four is...

Katalánský autonomní statut a jeho reforma z roku 2006 Bakalářská práce Abstract The Bachelor Degree Thesis " Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia and its reform in 2006" is a analysis of catalan autonomy during 20th and 21th century and comparasion of individual autonomous statuses. Thesis also contains related historical information about development at Catalan territory and important milestones in history of Iberian peninsula as well as Spanish transition to democracy and the Spanish Constitution in 1978. My work thus provides complex picture of Catalan autonomy and its development.

Frequency and causes of injuries of children in pre-hospital emergency care
MINAŘÍKOVÁ, Petra
Injuries represent the greatest danger for children and the most frequent cause of their death. A certain dangerous situation precedes every injury and as such it can always be prevented. Emergency rescue teams provide professional urgent pre-hospital care. Based on theoretical knowledge and practical experience of a member of a rescue team providing pre-hospital urgent care, two research objectives were determined. Objective no. 1 was to map out the number of children{\crq}s injuries in the regional centre of České Budějovice between 2004-2008. Objective no. 2 was to analyze the situations in which children of various ages get injured. Three hypotheses were determined. Hypothesis no. 1 ``Children living in towns get injured more frequently than children in villages``, was not confirmed. Hypothesis no. 2 ``Children up to 6 years of age most frequently suffer injuries when they are at home and their parents are not cautious enough``, was confirmed. The last determined hypothesis ``Children between 6 {--} 18 years of age get injured during active sports and traffic accidents most frequently``, was confirmed. It is more efficient to invest in preventative activities that reduce the number and seriousness of injuries in children. If we take measures to prevent injuries, the number of fatalities will go down.
