Fair Trade: the Fair Trade Organization
Castro Chaparro, Enrique Adolfo ; Štěrbová, Ludmila (advisor) ; Zamykalová, Miroslava (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to clarify concepts regarding the Fair Trade system and to contribute to an objective debate about the viability of the model and its real effects. It analyses history and development of trade; trade institutions and major players, development theories and namely concepts of Free Trade and Fair Trade and the differences between them. It is not fair to blame the market for the poverty and hardships of the poor; but it is also unwise to expect things to be fixed alone. Fair Trade is an alternative; a choice. It must not be taken as something unquestionably beneficial, but it must not be demonized either: a sincere debate is necessary to assess the effectiveness of Fair Trade and other forms of help to combat poverty.

Poverty Reduction in Developing Countries
Prchal, Tomáš ; Durdisová, Jaroslava (advisor) ; Kubelková, Karina (referee)
Poverty is a serious problem of the contemporary world. According to the World Bank statistics more than 1/6 of the world's population suffers from extreme poverty (with daily income less than 1,25 dollars). The main tool of poverty alleviation is the official development aid, which is based on transfers of funds from developed to developing countries. The aim of this thesis is to assess, by how far has the development aid been succesful in reducing the poverty. The analysis of two regions -- East Asia and Sub-saharan Afrika -- will serve this purpose. In East Asia the poverty was reduced by 750 million of people within 25 years. However, the role of development aid was found to be negligible. Sub-saharan Africa, despite large volumes of aid, didn't experience any decrease in poverty incidence at all. The analysis implied that official development aid is not a way out of poverty. The solution is to integrate developing countries to international trade and to follow convenient economic policies establishing an environment favourable to business and foreign direct investments.
Multi-criteria evaluation of living standards of households, indices of material deprivation
Schenková, Tereza ; Zelený, Martin (advisor) ; Dvornáková, Táňa (referee)
The thesis on the topic "Multi-criteria evaluation of living standards of households, indices of material deprivation" compares two approaches to the measurement of poverty and social exclusion. The first is an absolute concept, which is based on the measurement of the material deprivation. The second is a relative concept, which is currently in the European Union represented by the indicator "at-risk-of-poverty rate". Before being applied on the real data from 2008 for the Czech Republic, both concepts are theoretically described and explained. The indicator "at-risk-of-poverty rate" is calculated based on the results of a survey on the income and the living conditions of the Czech population. The material deprivation is then analysed for different groups of people of the Czech population and the indices of material deprivation are calculated. In the final section, the European Union member countries are compared according to these two concepts.
