Comparison of Shifts in the Intersemiotic and Interlingual Translation of Leaving by Václav Havel.

The central focus of this Master's thesis is to describe, explain and classify intersemiotic translation within current translation studies. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the thesis, the theoretical part draws inspiration also from aesthetics, semiotics, adaptation, literary and film studies. Our findings are applied to the empirical material - interlingual and intersemiotic translation of Leaving by Václav Havel. Both translations are thoroughly analysed and the identified shifts are classified into categories primarily inspired by Anton Popovič's model of translation (1975, 1983). Comparison proved that the approach to intersemiotic translations/film adaptations as interlingual translation works. Although, there was a need to create new categories for some shifts in the film adaptation. Based on that, we propose a new model of intersemiotic translation, which could serve as inspiration for further research.
Film adaptations of Émile Zola's Nana

In this thesis, four movie adaptations of naturalistic novel Nana by Emile Zola will be analysed. It will describe differences caused by the time in which the adaptations were filmed covering the period from the third decade of the twentieth century, when the most famous adaptation of Nana by Jean Renoir was created, till its modern form from the year 2001. The thesis will be mainly interested in the loyalty of each adaptation to the book. It will describe dominant features of the novel and assess how the directors succeeded in the preservation and depiction of the typical Zola's style together with the atmosphere and overall impression of each film. Throughout the work, I will try to answer a question whether the directors put emphasis on the same storylines as Zola did in the original novel and what is the cause of their modifications. Lu Xun's Short Story "Zhufu" and its Film Adaptation

The bachelor thesis focuses on a comparison of Lu Xun's short story "The New Year's Sacrifice" from 1924 and its cinematic adaptation of the same name from 1956. Aside from being a comparison of concrete semantic similarities and diversions between the two narratives, the thesis is also a reflection of the reasons behind these changes in a different historical and ideological context. For simple comparison of the two narratives, we have used modern narratological studies taking into account specifics of literature and cinema. As a mean of searching for semantic differences between the short story and its cinematic adaptation we have used the three following thematic issues. These are "motive of a woman", "characters between tradition and modernity", and "role of a narrator". The performed comparison suggests that semantic shifts happened in all three thematic fields even though with a different emphasis on each. While some of the meaning-making elements were emphasised in the cinematic adaptation, others changed or even developed a new meaning. The results of the research urge consideration about the many possibilities and ways of manipulating an artistic composition from the point of ideological demand in the historical context of an adaptation's development. Literary and film Kytice by Erben

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to compare the two different media, literature and film, specifically Erbenʼs and Brabecʼs Kytice. In the first part of the thesis deals with the film adaptations of literary works. On the literature as on the film this thesis is trying to look out narratological perspective. The thesis takes both media as a text types, which updats narrative. The second part is devoted to the interpretation of Erbenʼs Kytice. The interpretation is based on scientific studies that deals with poetry collection. The third section attempts to compare the two different media. Literary and film Kytice or Problems of film adaptation and attempt to find kitsch

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to compare the two different medias, literature and film, and specifically Erben's and Brabec's Kytice, while detection of kitsch in the movie. In the first part of the bachelor thesis deals with the film adaptations of literary works, focusing on open and closed adaptation, as way as interpreting a literary text, as the original film, the semiotics of film and finally the narrator of film. On the literature as on the film this thesis is trying to look out narratological perspective. The thesis takes both media as a text types, which updats narrative. The second part is dedicated to the kitsch, and describes its etymology, history, and not least its general definition. The third part of this thesis interprets Erben's Kytice, continues with comparing the two different types of media, while is trying to describe the way of adapting literary writing in to the film and compares these two media, while is trying to find a notification of kitsch. Contemporary Spanish literature in Mario Camus's filmography; House of Bernarda Alba, The Hive, The Innocents Saints

In the thesis "Contemporary Spanish Literature in the filmography of Mario Camus, The Beehive, The Holy Innocents, The House of Bernarda Alba" the focus has been on the reflection of Spanish literature in the work of an eminent Santander director Mario Camus. We have especially focused on comparing original works and their film adaptations, and on analysis of topics and values, which are mediated to the audiences. In the first chapter we have introduced Maria Camus as a person, his roots, and artistic tendencies. We have focused on the historical and cultural circumstances, which created the background for development of Camus' work and we have clarified the importance of the director in a group of new Spanish film. This group brought Spanish cinematography of that time a new view of presented reality. The second chapter provides a short introduction to literary and cinematic means of expression, clarifies their main differences and presents their terminologies, which will serve as fundamentals for the following chapters. Camel through the eye of a needle 1926 and 1936 (film adaptations of the play by František Langer)

This Bachelor thesis focuses on two film adaptations of the play Camel through the eye of a needle by František Langer in Czech cinematography until 1936. These namely are the silent version directed by Karel Lamač, produced in 1926, and the sound version directed by Hugo Haas and Otakar Vávra in 1936. The first part of this work generally describes the original theatre play, its history, structure and developement of the main text. It shows, how successful this play was on Czech, European and American stages and how this treatrical success influenced distributional possibilities of the film adaptations in the following years. The second part then compares two film adpatations, describes their production background, cast, public and media reception.
Kurt Vonnegut and His Humor in Three Literary Works and Their Cinematic Adaptations

This bachelor thesis compares three different cinematic adaptations of three novels by an American writer Kurt Vonnegut and focuses on the way they translate the humor of the three novels. The novels discussed are Mother Night (1962), Slaughterhouse Five (1969), and Breakfast of Champions (1973). The cinematic adaptations analyzed in this thesis are Slaughterhouse Five (1972) directed by George Roy Hill and based on a screenplay written by Stephen Geller, Mother Night (1996) directed by Keith Gordon and based on a screenplay written by Robert B. Weide and finally Breakfast of Champions (1999) directed by Alan Rudolph who also wrote the screenplay. The analysis as such is divided into four chapters. Chapter 2 introduces Kurt Vonnegut as an author as well as a person. Several key theories about humor are presented, mainly those articulated by Paul Lewis, Daniel Wickberg and Sarah Blacher Cohen. The phenomenon of cinematic adaptation is introduced in the same section and the theoretical background provided is based on works by Timothy Corrigan, Brian McFarlane and Seymour Chatman. Chapter 3 discusses the novel Slaughterhouse Five and its adaptation, focusing on its structure, themes, characters, time frame and humor. Farewell My Concubine - from a Hong-kong novel to a PRC film

Pursuant the comparison of novel Farewell, my concubine written by a Hong Kong novelist Li Bihua with its film adaptation, this master's thesis is analyzing the way of transition from literary text to audio-visual media and observes the differences, which are not only the result of this transformation, but also an example of different cultural environment of Hong Kong and the PRC.
