Peripheral development in the post-industrial period in the Czechia and Austria with the examples of Slavonice and Waidhofen an der Thaya
Horáček, Michal ; Marada, Miroslav (advisor) ; Bruckner, Lucie (referee)
The thesis is focused on the analysis of peripherals for the presence of post-industrial phenomena. We are mainly focusing on the outer periphery. The object is to reveal the main factors and barriers that affect peripheral development and help periphery overcome their positional disadvantage. Analysis of a survey conducted in the municipalities of Slavonice and Waidhofen an der Thaya indicated fundamental differences in relation to the post-modern values between these two geographically close locations. Structured interviews with community representatives bring out certain details on cooperation and the barriers to individual development. We can conclude from the results that the different social behaviour of peripherals caused by distinct historical and political development has not grown closer to the Austrian model even after 25 years of democracy in the Czechia. Key words: periphery, post-industrial period, development, cooperation

Radoslav P a s s i a Aesthetics of Periphery and Border (To Selected Aspects of Periphery and Border Phenomenon in Slovak Literature of the 20th Century in Central European Context) Abstract The dissertation deals with selected aspects of periphery and border phenomenon in Slovak literature of the 20th century in Central European context. In the preliminary chapter Border the author focuses particularly on selected texts by Central European writers which are thematically set in the Eastern Carpathians. This radically multiethnic region is considered to be one of the relatively independent cultural areas of Central Europe by the author. Narrative perspectives of a stranger, outcast, migrant in combination with the themes of border and conflict between vernacular and alien are characteristic for the literary image of the Eastern Carpathian border area in the 20th century. The author looks at the way the literary appearance of this area is ideologically deformed in the works of individual authors. The writers (mainly Czech and Polish) who do not come from the Eastern Carpathian border area use characters of strangers to reflect on the relationship between the modern and the traditional. Autochthonous authors often make use of the stranger characters to depict the area's self-colonial efforts in relation to the...
Vietnamese Retail as Part of the Non-metropolitan Area in Czechia
Horáček, Jiří ; Čermák, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Freidingerová, Tereza (referee)
Vietnamese food stores are located all over the Czechia and are often the only option for food purchases in non-metropolitan areas. This dissertation is focused on the study of Vietnamese retail in the context of the problems of serviceability of small towns and rural settlements in the Czechia. One of the main goals of this dissertation is to verify whether Vietnamese businesses are one of the ways to save the ever-falling rural service functions. Considering that the issue of rural service provision is an extensive topic, the work only yields partial results that will need to be verified in further studies. The introductory sections analyze the processes of Vietnamese migration into our country and subsequently characterize the development of retail. The next part focuses on the operation of Vietnamese retail where structured interviews conducted within the research serve as a main source of information. The quantitative part of the research focuses on the issue of the distribution of shops, and, in the empirical part, using questionnaire the functioning of the Zásmuky retail trade with a focus on Vietnamese food stores is assessed. The analysis shows that Vietnamese food stores are one of the solutions to maintaining business in rural communities. Due to the efficiency of their operation, which...
Karel Krejčí's Comparative Approaches in his Understanding of Czech and Polish Literature
Matějková, Veronika ; Janoušek, Pavel (advisor) ; Svatoň, Vladimír (referee) ; Trávníček, Jiří (referee)
The thesis documents and interprets the conflict between the literary discourses of the time on the one hand, and the specific approach of Karel Krejčí (1904-1979), comparatist, Slavist and Czech studies scholar, on the other hand. Based on the Krejčí's studies on literary history and comparative literature, as well as his participation in the methodological debates of his time, the thesis analyses the impact of this conflict on the author's literary theory method, and his work of a literary historian and comparatist in general. The analysis is based on the ambiguous reception of Krejčí's scientific work: while he is recognised as a great personality in the field of Slavic studies, he is considered an outsider in the general context of Czech literary science. The thesis describes how the author, with his methodological approach, was in opposition to the prevailing trend. As a Slavic studies scholar he criticised the 'influence science' and positivist methods employed in the field. In the period between the two world wars he inclined towards the sociology of literature, although this discipline did not become popular. While he was interested in phenomenology and formalism, he defended his 'historical-sociological' approach against structuralism, which was gaining ground. In the 1950s Krejčí wrote a...
Theme of Guilt and Punishment in Stories and Dramatic of František Langr in Domestic and Global Context
Krsková, Kateřina ; Mravcová, Marie (advisor) ; Holý, Jiří (referee)
The thesis describes the evolution and variances in the motive of crime and punishment throughout prosaic and dramatic works of František Langer. After an introductory reflection on crime and punishment the thesis deals with an analysis of Doskojevskij's novel "Crime and Punishment" which had a large impact on Langer's conception of these terms. It also outlines an image of crime and punishment in Czech literature at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, which might have influenced Langer. The first part also tries to clarify how these motives were evolved in author's incipient work. It follows up prose collections "Gold Venus" and "Dreamers and Murderers". The second part is focused on the refined and often very complicated form of crime and punishment in Langer's dramas "Saint Wenceslas", "Periphery", "Camel through Eye of a Needle", "Reversal of Ferdyš Pištora", "Angels among us" and "Seventy-two" and tries to grasp and characterize it.
Separatist tendencies in Europe - case of Catalonia and Padania
Voráček, Michal ; Romancov, Michael (advisor) ; Riegl, Martin (referee)
This bachelor thesis is devoted to Catalan and Padanian (North Italian) separatism. It aims to analyze and compare separatist tendencies in two European regions - in Catalonia and in the region of so-called Padania on the background of the historical development within their home states. The thesis is a combination of a description and a comparative case study and is divided into two main parts. The theoretical part deals with the definition of the basic terms that are crucial for understanding the issue of separatism and that pervade the whole thesis. After that, the cleavage theory of Stein Rokkan and Seymour Martin Lipset is briefly introduced, especially the centre-periphery cleavage on which the analytic part is based. The analytic part deals with the origin and rise of Catalan and, respectively, Padanian separatism, with an emphasis on the historical development of the analyzed regions, their current position within Spain and Italy, the main factors affecting separatist and nationalist tendencies and the contemporary political representation in both regions. In the final chapter, the obtained data are compared with the aim to find the basic similarities and differences between the separatism in Catalonia and so-called Padania.
The role of local actors in socio-economic development of west Bohemia border
Svoboda, Jan ; Komárek, Marek (advisor) ; Hlaváček, Petr (referee)
The following bachelor thesis aims to spread not only current theoretical, but especially empirical, knowledge about the role of local development actors in a different socio-economic state of municipalities located on the border peripheries of Czechia. The initial concept of assessment of all findings is the so-called "institutional thickness". The primary data analysed in this paper were obtained from 24 semi-structured interviews with mayors of local municipal councils. The main goal of this research is to understand and clarify, based on the analysis of semi- structured interviews, the density of social interactions in local development of municipalities. Since the interviews cover the entire Cheb county area, it was possible not only to evaluate partial social interactions, but also to compare those interactions within the whole area of the county (e.g. between smaller administrative units and others spatial entities). Conclusions of this thesis were also compared with other similar work done on the inner periphery of eastern Czechia between 2016 and 2017. The most important results are a confirmation of the key role of mayors in a local development, the active approach of local governance to participating in microregional unions is also very significant. The internal differentiation of...
