Gender variation of selected Czech toponyms ending with a soft or ambiguous consonant

In Czech, the assignment of grammatical gender to certain place names ending in (what is known as) soft or hybrid consonants is inconsistent, especially in the spoken language. These toponyms used to be treated as masculine nouns but today are overwhelmingly codified as feminine nouns. The present paper takes a look at the way these toponyms are described in linguistic guides and compendia which specify their gender, their origination and their meaning, or describe their use in local dialects. Based on the data in those manuals, the author has created a list of gender-shifting toponyms, with a brief specification of the grammatical gender and colloquial use (exactly as described in the said manuals), so as to allow for their easy comparison. Selected toponyms (which are analyzed in more detail in the grammatical guides, or which were assigned a different gender by different guides and compendia) are the subject of a broader discussion within the context of this work. In another section, the present work references the results of an internet questionnaire designed to map the actual use of grammatical gender for these toponyms by native speakers. The Brno's dialect "hantec" from the gender perspective

The topic of this thesis is gender analysis of "hantec", a specific dialect spoken in the second largest city in the Czech Republic - Brno. The aim of the work is to search for differences between manifestation and perception of women/female and men/male in "hantec" from the perspective of gender linguistics. On example of local dialect I demonstrate how the general gender discourse prevails. By analysing the vocabulary and literary forms of "hantec" I want to show to what extent this dialect (specific for Brno) reflected the principles of gender inequality. The focus lies on the presence of language sexism and reproduction of gender stereotypes in "hantec". In the thesis I also document the historical development of "hantec" and how were the principles of gender inequality displayed in the different stages of its development.

Localisation of Version D of "The Poema Morale" based on "The Linguistic Atlas of Early Middle English"

The present MA thesis presents an analysis of version D of the Early Middle English verse sermon known as the Poema Morale. The objectives of the study were to verify the present localisation of D in Western Kent and clarify its relations to two more copies of the same text (T and M). The research consistsed in analysing the language of the text it terms of its dialect and distinguishing between different layers of copying, where possible. The analysis was performed using the electronic tool Linguistic Atlas of Early Middle English, specific procedures included mainly analyses of maps showing the distribution of dialectal features found in D, which were complemented by discussions of forms which D shares with other Kentish texts or versions T and M. The aim of these discussions was the identification of words coming from the exemplar. Evidence supporting the localisation of D in Kent as well as forms presumably taken from the archetype were presented and put in the context of the results of previous studies.

The Influence of Chinese Dialects on Standard Pronunciation of Modern Chinese

This thesis is dealing with the influence of local varieties on approved pronunciation of PTH. Thesis is trying to specify the basic deviations in pronunciation of Mandarin Chinese according to phonological systems of local varieties. Phonological system of PTH is compared to the system of local varieties. Based on the differences between phonological systems of initial, finals and tones, is set the solution of the appearance of local PTH. This thesis is not back up with local research of PTH, because this kind of research is not a part of our work. We are aware of the lack of evidences caused by absence of local research. Our conclusions are confirmed only in additional sources. Even all this thesis provides the basic knowledge of the most common pronunciation deviations of PTH in China. This work could provide the basic information for additional research focussed on this topic.

Notional ambivalence in the work of Scottish writer Alasdair Gray Translation and stylistic analysis

This BA thesis is concerned with the translation of A history maker, a novel by Alasdair Gray and interpretation and analyses of the methods of translation which were used. It is divided into two parts. The first one is the translation itself which is the main part. The second part deals with the analyses of the translation and methodology that was applied. It focuses on the translation of Scottish dialect and informal speech. The thesis is predominantly aimed at demonstrating some standard translation approaches and practices, using the chosen textual material.

The issue of regional identity of the inhabitants of the Czech region Těšínsko and its reflection in the documentary Hranice po našimu

The diploma thesis deals with the issue of regional identity of the inhabitants of the Czech part of Teschen Silesia in connection with the documentary film Hranice po našimu. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the reaction of local inhabitants to this documentary and to trace how the topic of identity and local dialect was represented both in the discussion and the film itself. The reaction of the locals is analysed mainly using the internet discussion which developed on the Czech Television's official website after the broadcast of the film, as well as using available journalistic articles and official statements of Teschen institutions. The thesis also focuses on the inclination of some local inhabitants to create a regional form of identity which can replace the identification with cultures of the nation states. The thesis is based on the hypothesis that the creation of such regional identity is one of the possible escape strategies the locals might use to avoid a certain form of ethnic diction. This regional identity carries its own cultural elements, one of the most significant being the aforementioned local dialect which the thesis concentrates on.

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou anglických dialektů, které se objevují ve videohrách. Jejím cílem je analyzovat použití různých dialektů v sérii her Grand Theft Auto. Teoretická část je zaměřena na poskytnutí potřebných konceptů souvisejících se sociolingvistikou, rozmanitostí jazyka, dialekty, akcenty a herním průmyslem. Praktická část je zaměřena na jazykovou analýzu anglických dialektů, které se objevují v sérii her GTA. Tato analýza identifikuje dialekty postav ve hře z gramatické a fonetické perspektivy a vysvětluje důvody, které vedly tvůrce hry k výběru těchto dialektů.

Literature as a medium of memory in the Hlučín region at the example of writings of Jana Schlossarková

of the thesis "Literature as a medium of memory in the Hlučín region at the example of writings of Jana Schlossarková"; solver Michaela Kosařová Writings of Jana Schlossarková (*1941) are one of the important media of collective memory of the Hlučín area. The aim of this thesis is to analyse them. Her work is characterized in the main part of the thesis with the aid of the theories of collective memory and its media according to Maurice Halbwachs, Jan and Aleida Assmann, Astrid Erll and others. The common acknowledged theories are implemented in Jana Schlossarková's writings using predominantly the sample of the last published titles "Co na Prajzske se stalo" and "Co na Prajzske se povědalo". These two books include most of the previously published writings of the author. I analysed the contents, the style and the impact of the author's writing on the preservation and archiving of the specific local memory. The specific textual level is examined in the poem "Jak to s nami bylo". The key relevant paradigms for this memory and identity are shown on this sample. Additional information on the Hlučín region and its memory, the tendencies of maintaining this memory and the literature contributing to capture the memory, complement the core of this thesis. Specific language in region Suchdol nad Lužnicí in three generations

The aim of my dialectological bachelor's thesis was to found out if and which characterictics features are appearing in the everyday speech of native speakers in Suchdol nad Lužnicí. In a brief way it described the specifics and generaral distribution of the south-west bohemia dialect. The practical part focused on the observation of local language in the context of three generations.
