Germany in Czech Daily press: Stereotypes and the ,,Image of the Other'' in Comments and Opinions in Polls-Year 2017
Stojanovová, Kamila ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (referee)
This thesis bases on an constructivist approach in media studies in context of the role of Germany as a civilian power and hegemon of the European Union and deals with the extent, to which arguments arising from the asymmetric partnership between the Czech Republic and Germany in the past ten years in terms of bilateral relations, foreign policy making of the both states and agenda such as different energy policy conceptions were being reflected in comments and opinions by the Czech daily press in connection with the German parliamentary elections in 2017. In addition to the theory of social construction of reality in this thesis, the concept of role theory serves to explain the role of Germany as a civilian power and the process of shaping its identity. The thesis presents the results of an research, in which a critical discourse analysis (CDA) aimed to formulate hypotheses reflecting the way of image-construction of Germany as "the other," in terms of van Dijk's ideological square "us versus them" and the presence of stereotypes in the comments and opinions in the Czech press. The formulated hypotheses later became the basis for a quantitative content analysis carried out on a research sample of 59 articles published in the daily Mladá fronta DNES, Právo, Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny.
Members of the Austro-Hungarian Air Force from the Czech Lands
Rajlich, Jiří ; Županič, Jan (advisor) ; Horčička, Václav (referee) ; Zářický, Aleš (referee)
The aim of this paper is to outline the share of airmen from the Czech lands in the formation, organizational and personnel construction, technical development and operational deployment of the Austro-Hungarian Air Force in the pre-war period and especially during World War 1. Simultaneously, this work will also try to determine their percentage share in the entire Austro-Hungarian Army and Naval Air Forces. The national (or provincial) origin of the personel of the Austro-Hungarian Air Force has not yet been the subject of historical research in any of the successor states. The reason was the fact that this young weapon was not statistically monitored - unlike other weapons. For Austrian historiography, the ethnic composition of the Austro-Hungarian aviation was not a subject of adequate attention. In Czech and Czechoslovakian historiography, for a long time, it was stated that number of the Czech airmen in the Austro-Hungarian Air Force was "insignificant". However, this age-old thesis, which has never been credibly proven, is subject to criticism in this work, leading to its re-evaluation. In particular, the reconstruction and analysis of statistically relevant samples of people revealed that in fact the representation of airmen from the Czech lands was above average and the Czechs had a solid...
"Heimat in Ketten": Development of ideological construction of german borderland novel in the First Republic
Pípalová, Anna ; Kubů, Eduard (advisor) ; Štolleová, Barbora (referee)
(in English) The presented diploma thesis analyzes German borderland novels (Grenzlandroman) of the interwar period, namely Robert Hohlbaum's Grenzland (1921), Rudolf Haas' Heimat in Ketten (1924), Das Dorf an der Grenze (1936) by Bruno Nowak, writing under the pseudonym Gottfried Rothacker, and Die Brüder Tommahans (1937) by Wilhelm Pleyer. As a literary genre, the borderland novel took conflict between nations as its central theme, while addressing contemporary or recent social evolution. German borderland novels from interwar Czechoslovakia give evidence of how not only the authors but also the whole social groups reflected societal changes in the aftermath of 1918. An analysis of the narratives typical of this segment of literature confirms its relevance to the formation of the German population's identity in interwar Czechoslovakia. Stereotyping mechanisms play a crucial role in instilling abstract notions of nationality in the everyday perception of ordinary people. The borderland novels' narrative practices contribute to the reconstruction and fixation of this stereotypical perception of reality. This perception not only affects the way individuals and social groups view their surrroundings, but also interferes with the interpretation of events. Analysis of the selected texts enables us to...

Kuklíková, Kateřina ; Kunštát, Miroslav (advisor) ; Handl, Vladimír (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the impact of the former Czechoslovak and Czech president Václav Havel on the Czech-German mutual relationship within the examined time period between 1993 and 1997. The main focus lies on Havel's personal initiative, gestures and concrete political steps concerning the improvement of the Czech-German diplomacy. According to the high frequency of his engagement in this specific agenda of the Czech foreign affairs, Havel played an important role in the whole development of the Czech- German relations, occasionally even as a "driving force". Firstly, the historical and political contexts of Havel's position in the Czech-German bilateral diplomacy is depicted, with an emphasis on the negotiations regarding the Czechoslovak-German Treaty on Good- Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation from 1992 and the Czech-German Declaration on the Mutual Relations and their Future Development signed in 1997. Secondly, the official speeches of Havel, proclamations, meetings with German statesmen, particularly with the president Weizsäcker, or various media interviews had been analyzed. Although the legal documents should have contributed to a constructive dialogue and a successful cooperation, the historical issues related primarily to the World War II had an enormous impact on the...

Zikmund, Michal ; Malý, Karel (advisor) ; Šouša, Jiří (referee)
The thesis Political Programmes of the Czech Representation in the Second Halve of the 19th Century focuses on both programme documents and actual work of Czech political parties, whether more or less institutionalized, between the years 1848 (March Revolution) and 1918 (the downfall of Austria-Hungary). At first it summarizes the historical development in the respective period (Chapter 1), next, it analyses programmes of political parties in three broadly defined topics: 1) Organisation of the empire, question of the Czech State Right (Chapter 2); 2) Constitutionalism, civil rights and role of a citizen (Chapter 3) and 3) National matters (Chapter 4). The attitudes about each of these areas of the following political parties are defined: Bohemian nobility, National Party (till 1874) or Old Czechs (since then), Young Czechs, Social Democrats, Agrarians, Catholic parties, National Socialists, Progress parties and parties of the Radical State Right, Realists and Anarchists. For the conclusion, the author of the thesis attempts to characterise and evaluating the Czech political representation, as well as its importance for the development since 1918.
