Folk Dualism and the Two Conceptual Realms
Jirout Košová, Michaela ; Peregrin, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Koreň, Ladislav (referee) ; Sytsma, Justin (referee)
The thesis focuses on the irreducibility of the concept of a person to scientific view of the world. The main inspiration for thematising this specific aspect of folk dualism comes from Donald Davidson (two realms) and Wilfrid Sellars (two images). The theoretical sections are complemented by reflexion on results of empirical studies provided mostly by experimental philosophy in order to demonstrate how this approach benefits attempts to reach complex view of philosophical questions that have close connection to moral dimension of human life. The first chapter addresses a wider concept of self and introduces the idea of the necessity to bring the two conceptual realms on the scene: there is a specific conceptual realm (irreducible to physical realm or scientific image) enabling proper grasp of the concept of a person. The subsequent chapters address particular sub-concepts of the concept of self. The second chapter focuses on the concept of free will, and by referring to different views it points to the necessity to bring folk concepts into consideration. It concludes that the folk concept of free agent is transcendent with regard to scientific accounts and bears certain "supernatural" characteristics connected to the concept of conscious will. The third (and central) chapter brings focus on the...
Neural Correlates of Consciousness: Theoretical problems and Candidates
Blaštík, Filip ; Flegr, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Boschetti, Silvia (referee)
Consciousness is part of the world, which yet resisted a scientific inquiries for an ages. This work is mainly concerned around Neural Correlates of Consciousness program which should uncover a nature of the consciousness. It covers wide variety of a theoretical problems, the first part is concerned around the ambivalence of Neural Correlates of Consciousness definition and its alternatives. The second part asks a questions, whether the neural correlates of consciousness is only discourse creating entity and sheds a light on the dilemma, if the right correlations to form neural correlates of consciousness are possible. It is done on a basis of the experimental evidence and their attempts to form Neural Correlate of Consciousness. In third chapter the philosophical dilemma is exposed. The dilemma arises from conceptual decisions "What is to be conscious", how researchers philosophically pre-conceptualize the scientific question. This is tried to be reconciled by unification of the philosophical theories. Alas it is shown the unification of the theories of mind is impossible. From this is drawn a conclusion that the philosophical pre-conception is a necessary ingredient to form the neural correlate of consciousness. To breach from mere a correlation to a causality is a matter of choosing testable and...
Anticipation sources and interaction during the serve return
Reischlová, Eliška ; Carboch, Jan (advisor) ; Kočíb, Tomáš (referee)
Title: Anticipation sources and interaction during the serve return Objectives: The objectives of this diploma thesis are to explore what kinds of anticipatory resources elite tennis players perceive and which ones they take in consideration when returning the service. Methods: The qualitative type of research was used in this diploma thesis, specifically a case study. Professional tennis players were chosen and their ATP emplacement is from 26th to 163th in the world. Five of the chosen tennis players only train now, two of them train and also play and the other two only play. Their age varies from 25 to 43 years old. A method of review with instruction was used, the review had seven questions and lasted approximately 30-60 minutes during which the players thought in detail of key factors that they use for anticipation the service. The second phase of the research was a transcription of the review, its coding and analysis. Results: In this diploma thesis there is a description of individual themes that point out to other anticipatory resources which tennis players examine during their matches. Tennis players examine contextual and kinematic resources that help them to anticipate the service during the match. It was also found that tennis trainers do not use anticipation and returning the service...
The effect of psychedelics on sleep
Šachová, Pavla ; Kopřivová, Jana (advisor) ; Spišská, Veronika (referee)
Recently, psychedelic drugs gain attention thanks to their potential to cure depressive disorders, anxious states or addiction. They are not causing addiction, they are not toxic and they trigger neuroplastic changes in tens of minutes or hours, which are essential for therapeutic purposes and positively correlates with an onset of antidepressant effect. Neuroplastic changes are simultaneously the connecting link between psychedelic state and sleep. In sleep the higher rate of neuroplasticity is markable during slow-wave sleep (SWS), which duration is getting shorter in patients with mental illness. The marker o neuroplasticity is slow-wave activity (SWA), which is getting higher not only in SWS, but also after intoxication with psychedelics or after long-time using of antidepressants. So the effect of psychedelics on sleep can be described as positive and inciting its therapeutical potential. The thesis is focused on ketamine which is the most recent one as for the topic of neuroplasticity and sleep.

The Imagination as a Link Between Dream and Art
MOLÍKOVÁ, Veronika
Where is the area, in which dream and art unite and in which they mingle situated, and, on the contrary, where is the borderline between them? What do our inner images mean for us? Is the imagination a link of artistic creation and dreaming? If we admit this, can we consider dreaming as a form of art, as an intentionally focussed activity inside us? The form of art with its proper author-recipient, with denying its servitude? Could we achieve an aesthetic attitude to a figure, to a construct, when its fundamentals cannot be revealed? Or is that consideration absolutely misled? Besides those consideration, some people confirm, that dreams are too elusive to be judged But works of art are not? And is not the solution hidden in spaces of our consciousness? The fusion of dream and art becomes the topic of the following lines.

Evolution as a Way to God in the Work of Teilhard de Chardin
Jirousová, Františka ; Karfíková, Lenka (advisor) ; Sokol, Jan (referee) ; Macek, Petr (referee)
This dissertation deals with the notion of centration in the work of Teilhard de Chardin, the notion being examined with regard to two related aims: 1) to illustrate the logical structure of Teilhard's Christian theory of evolution, and 2) to explain the relation between centration carried out by created beings and centration assigned to God as the focal point of evolution. In other words: to explore the connection between fundamental freedom attributed by Teilhard to created beings and culminating in human beings according to him, and God's freedom demonstrating itself in controlling the universe and directing it to a goal being the fullness of being (pleroma). The first part presents Teilhard's life and the contexts of his work. The second part explains the main notions of Teilhard's theory and metaphysics, such as "consciousness", "spirit", "energy", "centro-complexity", and "matter", and relates them to the notion of centration. Centration is presented here as an activity of the consciousness consisting in the unifying formation of multitude by its interconnection with different types of relations around one centre. In such unification, the main law of evolution manifests itself - the Law of Differentiating Unity. This means that parts unified in such way start differentiating again. What is...
