Superman: The Semantics, Evolution Poetics and Socio-cultural Specificities of the Superhero Comics.

This bachelor thesis considers the genre of superhero comics since its appearance in 1938 to the present time. The thesis, according to chosen comic books, tries to generally describe and interpret superhero discourse, in particular the evolution and various specificities. The main focus is on the comics narrativity and primary aspects of narration (narrator, intertextuality, characters, time of story). There is no analysis touching visual comics aspects. The only exception - the last chapter - examines the impressive evolution poetics of the title-pages.

Comics of the Czech magazine Ohníček in the period of 1968-71: semiotic analysis

The topic of the thesis is the genre of comics in the Czech magazine Ohníček during the early period of normalization: the text is based on a detailed analysis of eleven comics that were published in the magazine between years 1968-71 (season 19-21). As far as the genre criteria are concerned, the analysed comics came closer to adventurous stories that were very popular in the 60/70s. At the same time, the original visual expression changed so that it was more suitable to child readers. Three of the analysed comics are comic series where the particular episodes are connected to each other by an adventurous narrative storyline. The eight others are comic strips with the narrative type of gag or fable. When examining the particular comics, the focus was on several aspects: the use of language, visual expression, story articulation and specific distinctive aspects. Differences in those aspects made the comics mutually different and deviating from the classics of genre. Both the graphic form and the story line of the analysed comics were determined by the fact that they were published in a children magazine. As results of the analysis, hero types and the resemblance of the fiction world according to the narrative type are descript and a comparison with European and American comics tradition is given.

A Rite of Passage: The Transformation of Anglo-American Comic Books in the Post-World War II Era

1 Abstract The subject matter of the bachelor thesis is the evolution of Anglo-American mainstream comic books in the post-World War II era, with principal focus on the epochs that have transformed this art form the most during the past seventy years. The thesis aims to present Anglo-American comic books as a medium with substantial storytelling potential that had to struggle with harsh censorship and the unforgiving dynamics of the entertainment industry in order to maintain its position in Western popular culture. The continuous efforts of comic books to remain socially relevant and to connect with audiences are explored though an overview of key decades in the medium's history, which are accompanied by the analyses of select works. The contents as well as format of these works show that comic books are a remarkably adaptive art form that can not only operate within a wide array of genres but also merge with other forms of popular entertainment, transcending the boundaries of traditional media. The first chapter contains a brief overview of the origins and post-war development of comic books, while the subsequent passages offer a more detailed analysis of three crucial periods in the medium's history. Postmodernism in British and American comics : postmodernist overtones in the works of Alan Moore and Grant Morrison

The aim of this thesis is the examination and analysis of postmodernist overtones in the medium of comics. It is concerned both with the postmodernist content in comics, and comics' possibilities and attributes as a postmodernist medium. The first part of the thesis elaborates on sequential art in general and the essential elements of postmodernism, such as deconstruction, metafiction, and intertextuality, within its context. The second part of the thesis is concerned with selected postmodernist works of prominent comicbook authors: Alan Moore and Grant Morrison. Sketching Trauma: the Disintegration of Yugoslavia in Comics

Master thesis examines comics that reflect the break-up of Yugoslavia. The theoretical part describes the main discourses that aim to explain the dissolution of Yugoslavia as well as the essential theoretical background of comics studies. The analytical part examines the ways in which comics mediate the break-up of Yugoslavia and, in particular the trauma associated with it. Authors of the comics most often work with a discourse that argues ethnic hatred, but they view it critically and point out its falsity. The analysis further revealed that comics provide a vast space for empathizing with victims of war trauma. Getting to know the survivors of traumatic events closely, as well as the concept of false memories that develop during reading of comics, facilitates empathetic reading. All the authors refuse to glorify war, focusing instead on the fatal effects that war has on the lives of ordinary people.

Woman in Comics: Comparison of Woman Visual Depictions and Her Function and Role in Comics

Diploma thesis "Woman in Comics: Comparison of Woman Visual Depictions and Her Function and Role in Comics" is internally divided into two parts: a theoretical and a research part. The theoretical part introduces a history of comics, from the beginning of this medium till present and focuses on woman comics characters and their typologies. The analytical part of the diploma work presents own research which deals with visual depiction of women in comics: examines their functions and roles in comics and bindings to the depictions. A part of the research section of this work is also comics codes analysis (genre, modality, visual codes, nonverbal and language codes), summary of quantitative researches of female characters in comics and basic information about analysed comics (author of the comics, category etc.). The researched sample is composed of three comics: Li'l Abner (author: Al Capp), Wonder Woman (author: Charles Moulton), Strangers in Paradise (author: Terry Moore). Outcome of this research is a survey of analysed female and male characters, a summary of the visual analysis and implying results.

Ancient History in comics

The subject of this thesis is comic books which are in themes and subject matter devoted to the history of ancient Greece and Rome. Attention is paid to comic books which were published from the beginning of the genre up to the present day, with the intention to document the largest spectrum of content and various conceptions of illustration. The goal is to analyse these publications both from the perspective of structure and, most importantly, from the viewpoint of factual correctness. The thesis pays attention to the concept of a story and to the author's intention to educate the reader; but taking into consideration that these books are fictional with the main purpose to entertain the reader. This aim is closely connected to another substantial objective of the thesis, which is to evaluate the benefit of these publications for children's literature and to consider the adequancy, whether the amount of factual knowledge is suitable for the intended child or juvenile reader. The potential use and application in the teaching of ancient history within the framework of school history teachers or other educational programs is also taken into consideration.
