Lives of the Indian community in Czechia
Kohoutová, Magdaléna ; Géla, František (advisor) ; Silverio, Robert (referee)
In the practical part of this thesis, under the title Life of the Indian community in the Czech Republic, I documented the everyday life of several representatives of this nationality. My goal was to show how and why this very small minority lives here. In the photo book that emerged from this effort, I captured the Eastern and Western worlds colliding in their lives. The theoretical part of this work is devoted to journalistic photography, specifically photojournalism and documentary photography. These two genres are very close, they even overlap in many ways. I will therefore determine what the differences between them are. The next chapters already touch on the practical part of my work. I describe how to work with the depiction of foreign cultures in a photo document. I will take postcolonialist theory and its understanding of the relationship between Western civilization and the rest of the world as a guide. Subsequently, I will present the work of several contemporary Czech photographers who work with foreign cultures. I will look into their style and focus in particular on their understanding of the intercultural scale of their work.

Wood, Galina ; Malečková, Jitka (advisor) ; Saxena, Siddharth (referee) ; Oberfalzerová, Alena (referee)
- Galina Wood, 2015 Lahij, the Living Heritage of Azerbaijan This research explores the various aspects of identity pertaining to the traditional, bilin- gual mountainous community of Lahij. Azerbaijan is little known and its minorities are largely under-researched. Previous work done by Russian and Azerbaijani linguists described grammatical features of the Tat language, and SIL-led linguistic field surveys by J. Clifton addressed some sociolinguistic attitudes, yet the Tat people, particularly the Lahij people, remain unknown. This is the first time the Lahij community, which preserved a relict Southwest Iranian language and a unique culture, is a topic of inter-disciplinary research in English language. Resources such as Russian and Azeri literature and Western works dealing with related dis- ciplines and issues (historical, socio-linguistical, anthropological etc.) are discussed, aiming to reach a balanced and informed perspective. To present the nuances and dynamics of the emic (insider) versus etic (outsider) points of view, anthropological methods of participant observation, structured interview and narrative analysis are used. Research was done while residing long term in Azerbaijan, and spending significant amounts of time in Lahij. The sociolinguistic climate of Post-Soviet nation...
Legal regulation of the Jewish minority in Czechoslovakia between wars
Urešová, Jana ; Kindl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Šouša, Jiří (referee)
The issue of Jewish minorities especially during the time of WW2 was discussed many times already. In a number of sources is relatively accurately captured the political situation and the gradual elimination of Jews from society, not to mention the persecution itself. This topic has me wondering about since I was about Jews and World War 2 learned. Already in elementary school I was reading children's encyclopedias most this topic and still could not understand how something like this could happen. What I got older, the more information I investigated, but still without understanding the causes why the Jews, whom you made that had so cruelly ended, and again and again the same question, how is it possible that this could happen in the recent past? ? Thesis Theme for me was clear because of that. I had quite a lot of information about Jewish life during the war, but I did not know too much about their origin and especially fascinated by the origins of their control what circumstances preceded the war. As a basis for a complete understanding of all contexts, in my opinion, necessary to start from the beginning. Who are the Jews, where they were married, where they came from, who they were, what they ate and how they are treated as a minority. After finding this information, for me it...
The Israeli Druze: Military Service as a Tool to Influence Domestic and Foreign Policy
Odlová, Markéta ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Záhora, Jakub (referee)
Master thesis entitled "The Israeli Druze: Military Service as a Tool to Influence Domestic and Foreign Policy" regards the relations of the Israeli Druze Community and the State of Israel. Druze people live also in Lebanon and Syria and are usually categorized as an ethno-religious and transnational group. They are distinctive for their secretive and esoteric religion and tightly-knit social bonds. The Israeli Druze community (composing less than 2 % of the Israeli population) is specific for its mandatory service in the Israeli Defense Forces, which marks a difference from other Arabic speaking citizens of Israel. The service in the Israeli army implies that the Israeli Druze people are loyal both to the state and the transnational Druze community. Using the framework of a theoretical concept of Strategic Military Refusal by Udi Lebel, the goal of the thesis is to examine whether the Israeli Druze community was able to influence domestic and foreign policy of the State of Israel in order to reach its own political goals, whether these efforts were intentional, strategic and successful. Alongside, it is also identified which factors may influence the loyalty of the Israeli Druzes towards the State of Israel. To achieve this goal, two cases are analyzed: 1) the reaction of the Israeli Druze...

Adlerová, Nina ; Řezáčová, Vendula (advisor) ; Paulíček, Miroslav (referee)
This bachelor thesis "Fieldwork in the Jewish community in Prague" is concerned with the social identity of young Czech Jews. The aim of this work is to describe the duality, or hybridity of identity based on the blending of two distinct identities, namely Czech and Jewish identity. There is also an effort to transcribe the self-reflection bearers of these identities in their everyday lives. This work relies on the work of several prominent authors handling with social, or ethnic identity, and also on earlier research conducted by Dana Bittnerová on national and ethnic minorities living in the Czech Republic. The basis of this work is anthropological fieldwork, which focused primarily on members of one particular group, which is part of the Prague community. This group is called Czech Union of Jewish youth. This research was consisted of participant observation organized events or events arising spontaneously and of interviews with selected respondents. It is shown that for all the observed, Jewishness and Czechness are an integral part of their identities, of whom they are. And that these two identities are closely intertwined. Jewish identity is indeed imperative, but to maintain a strong identity is also necessary process of self-identification. The signs of declared identity are also important...

The aim of this work is to clarify the integration of Vietnamese living in the Czech Republic as well as the associated reasons for their arrival in the country. The data obtained from a questionnaire survey, given to random group of respondents that minority, I compiled using graphs. Carried out a questionnaire survey, I found that the rate of integration is very small, especially among older generations. The contribution of this work is a proposal to raise awareness of this minority through outreach workers. This work is solved in the context of better relations, and increases the interest of minority integration between Vietnamese and Czech companies.

Ander, Adam ; Irmanová, Eva (advisor) ; Tejchman, Miroslav (referee)
The thesis presents theoretical approaches to the issue of national minorities and seeks to include two specific cases - Slovakia and Hungary - into this theoretical spectrum. Slovak and Hungarian minorities in Hungary and Slovakia respective are characterized at the same time. Territorial delimitation is obvious, time delimitation is primarily based in the first decade of the new millennium, ending in 2010. Theoretical part of the thesis is divided into two parts - first dealing with national and ethnic minorities (various classifications, terminology and characteristics), second with possible approaches of states to their national minorities (discussed are all conceivable approaches from the least favorable to the friendliest one). The practical part is divided into two main chapters, namely by surveyed countries - Slovakia and Hungary. Both of these chapters deal with national minorities in a given country, with the characteristics of these minorities and their legal status. Analysis of legal statuses of these minorities is based on international treaties, constitutions and laws of both countries. While Slovakia provides its minorities only with individual rights, Hungary introduced quite unusual system of personal cultural and schooling autonomy. The conclusion attempts to find the most...
