Using games in teaching German with focus on development of writing skills

The thesis deals with possible progress in writing in German of students at secondary schools by the use of didactic games. The theoretical part sets writing in context of language didactics and describes its significant aspects such as development, functions, and contribution to teaching a foreign language. It also focuses on conception of writing in the school educational plan of secondary school, at which the research was done. Then, it introduces games as a possible activating teaching method aimed at development of writing and describes their evaluation, roles of teacher, purpose, and classification. The practical part is devoted to the actual research. Firstly, it depicts writing games that are divided into three parts - preparing, building, and structuring, and designed to gradually develop writing of students. From these writing games, six were chosen to be practically verified at the secondary school. For this verification, two methods were selected, an experiment and a questionnaire. The aim of the thesis was to find out whether the selected writing games contributed to the development of writing of students at the secondary school. Early reading skills in children with specific language impairment

Eva Richterová - Early reading skills development in children with specific language impairment This study investigated the development of early reading skills in children with specific language impairment within a psycholinguistic framework. The investigation is based on theories concerning linguistic and cognitive skills which play a crucial role in the development of reading skills. This approach is utilized to identify groups which are at risk of difficulties in literacy acquisition as a result of language impairment. Theoretical background of reading development in children with SLI is presented, in addition to current knowledge about the relationship between language and reading skills. Studies on SLI highlight the need of longitudinal investigations, which enable better understanding of the relationship between literacy development and preliteracy skills. The aim of the study was to provide a systematic description of the reading skills development in children with SLI from first to fourth Grade. A group of 25 children with SLI was repeatedly investigated in terms of their reading skills (decoding and reading comprehension) and preliteracy skills. This documents deals with a development of reader literacy as well as working with the story with preschoolers. In theoretical part we discuss concepts like preschool age, where we explain each segment of children development and its lawfulness. Next we discuss topics like literacy and pre-literacy and we'll also concentrate on a reader segment. Next up we will take a look on games and stories in general and how each of these concepts influence preschool education. Last part of theoretical part focuses on educational methods for development of children of preschool age. Goal of a practical part is: a) research focused on pre-reading abilities of preschool children in certain classes- research pattern and experimental pattern b) to create a suitable methodology for development of pre-reading abilities of preschool children c) to use these methods in practice with a follow-up diagnostic of ability level of preschool children d) evaluation of information from acquired results e) creation of a book containing stories created and illustrated by preschool children. Using Multimedia for Supporting Listening Comprehension at Students of French Language

The dissertation thesis deals with the skill of listening comprehension and using multimedia for its support in the French language teaching process. The issue is studied within the context of Czech curricular documents. It classifies language skills from the point of view of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The process of listening comprehension is described in linguo-didactics from the historical point of view and as a process of language communication. Attention is paid especially to listening comprehension in foreign language teaching. The thesis focuses also on methodical procedures when developing and reinforcing this language skill. Integration of multimedia with respect to varied learning styles and strategies is described. Styles according to the perception preferences and listening learning strategies are focused on. The aim of the thesis is to find out what is the position of the listening comprehension skill in the French language teaching process at upper-secondary schools, what is the success rate of the students in the process of comprehension of the spoken language, whether multimedia can contribute to successful comprehension of the spoken language in a foreign language. The level of basic reading and writing skills of bilingual primary school children

Basic reading skills in Czech language, bilingual primary school children This thesis focuses on reading issues in Czech language in bilingual school age children born and taught in Czech environment. The main aim is to map there reading and writing skills in Czech language of bilingual children who live and study at the primary school with one or both parents from foreign country. The theoretical part defines the different types of bilingualism. It introduces the current state of knowledge about its advantages and disadvantages define the specifics of our language and education system focusing on the problems of foreigners and bilingual children. The practical part presents a research study in which the author compares the performance of monolingual and bilingual children in test mapping a level of the basic reading and writing skills in Czech language. There were used tests such as test of reading with comprehension, reading of pseudowords, writing a dictation, and test of reading literacy with expert text. Motivation to learn foreign languages and the plurilingual repertoire

The bachelor thesis deals with the theme of motivation to learn foreign languages and plurilingual repertoire. The first chapters are focused on basic concepts related to motivation, types of motivation and division of motives. The specifics of motivation in the field of learning foreign languages are also pointed out. The second level of the theoretical part is the plurilingual repertoire. This part is principally devoted to the language politics of the Council of Europe and the Common European Framework for Languages. The empirical part of the bachelor thesis stands on the basis of a survey. The research was focused on students of various specializations of bachelor study at the Faculty of Education of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice. The aim of the research was to find out what motivates students to learn foreign languages and which language level they reach in the given foreign languages, in each language skill separately.
Teaching grammar using the novel of V. Hugo - Les Misérables

The diploma thesis is focused on the grammar teaching in the context of a literary work. The aim of the thesis is to introduce possible positives coming out of the combination of the two relatively remote parts of the foreign-language teaching that are grammar as a language component and the development of a reading skill thanks to the presence of the literary text. The theoretical part firstly deals with the phenomena of presence of a literary text in an educational process. Second part focuses on grammar and especially the way of teaching it with the help of a literary text. The last part states the reasons of the choice of a particular novel - Les Misérables. The practical part of the work deals with worksheets where we want to demonstrate how to work with the text in favour of both - grammar and reading skill - in the same time. Fairy Tales in French Language Teaching

This diploma thesis deals with the topic of fairy tales in French language teaching. The first part is dedicated to the definition of fairy tales as literary texts and to the presentation of general aspects related to the use of literary forms in foreign language teaching. The subsequent parts are focused exclusively on fairy tales. First of all, the fairytale genre is generally introduced. Afterwards, several ways of the application of fairy tales in French classes are outlined, with regard to the focus on language skills and sub-skills. The practical part includes more subsections, however, it mainly aims at the analysis of the role of fairy tales in French language teaching in the Czech Republic. Therefore, it consists of the analysis of significant French textbooks and of a questionnaire survey aimed at Czech lower secondary and high school teachers. The textbook analysis verifies the presence of fairy tales in didactic materials, whereas the aforementioned survey examines the experience and opinions of foreign language teachers on this issue. Finally, three worksheets, based on recently acquired knowledge, are created to serve as the source of inspiration and motivation for the use of fairy tales in foreign language teaching. Text comprehension in primary school students - oral reading vs listening comprehension

The main aim of the thesis are the mapping the level of understanding narrative text for student of fifth grade primary school with the typical development of reading skills. The thesis deal with the relationship between listening comprehension and reading comprehension. The thesis is traditionally divided into a theoretical and empirical part. The first part of the thesis prestnts the theoretical background research problems of comprehension the text. Attention is focused mainly on the domain of listening comprehension and reading comprehension, including a summary of the current state of knowledge about the relationship between both skills in foreign and Czech studies, as well as the diagnostics of reading and prerequisites that are reflected on the comprehensions the text. In the practical part are conclusions expected on its own research, which was attended by 40 students taught by the analytic-synthetic metod of reading, are compared with the results of the three year research project GAČR - Reading complrehension - typical development and its risks, where attended 59 students of fifth grade primary school taught by the same reading method. In addition to comprehension level will be monitored by level of basic language skills.
