Icelandic fisheries as the national interest and its influence on the formation of the foreign policy
Tůmová, Kateřina ; Hořejšová, Tereza (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
Presented thesis analyzes the Icelandic fisheries as a national interest and its role in foreign policy. Importance of fisheries confirms the fact that in the first half of the twentieth century marine products accounted for over 90% of Iceland's exports and the Icelandic economy was fully dependent on one sector. Gradual diversification of the economy in the seventies, however, caused a decline in exports of fish products to one-third of total exports. The thesis assumes that the Icelandic fisheries have a significant impact on foreign policy, even though its economic importance is declining. The research is carried out on three historical events, such as the cod wars in the fifties and the seventies, mackerel dispute in 2010 and the withdrawal of Iceland's application to the EU in 2015. It would be expected that due to the economic ties and Icelandic membership in international organizations (NATO, EFTA) the Icelandic government would primarily seek peaceful solutions in international conflicts. However, it could be observed in the Icelandic case that due to the pressure of the domestic politics the government does not respond as it would be expected. According to the neoclassical realism the thesis should verify a hypothesis that in a case of security threat, the Icelandic government will give...

Architecture of the extreme
Malásek, Petr ; Albert, Novák (referee) ; Kaftan, Martin (advisor)
In the eyes of a traveller, Iceland seems to be a paradise on earth, but in the eyes of an inhabitant, it doesn't seem so clear. A number of factors come into play, such as the difficult availability of building materials, low population density or the unbalanced length of day and night during the months, which also has considerable consequences for the mental state of the population. The project takes into account the last mentioned problem. In the design of a simple family farm, the project tries to discover the basic principles of how to fight the lack or excess of daylight and at the same time solve questions of contemporary theory of architecture and materialize the problem of part and whole relationships.
Causes of electoral success and failure of pirate parties
Vosátka, Petr ; Brunclík, Miloš (advisor) ; Stauber, Jakub (referee)
This diploma thesis aims to identify the possible causes of the success of pirate parties in Iceland and the Czech Republic. The success is defined as entering the national parliaments. This was failed by pirate parties in Sweden and Germany despite their popularity. Thus, the work examines four political parties and four countries in which these parties are located. The purpose of the analysis is to find out what makes the successful parties different from the unsuccessful ones or what the successful parties have in common. The analysis is based on testing and measuring the factors contributing to the initial success of the new political parties and to the ability of maintaining their popularity. The theoretical framework for the electoral success of pirate parties is measured by factors that are derived primarily from the theory of the rise of new challenger parties by Airo Hino and from the concept of the organizational strength of political parties by Margit Tavits. The framework is expanded with additional indicators proposed by the author. The basis of the tested groups of factors is composed of quantitative variables, that includes the institutional conditions, socio-economic conditions and political conditions of the systems in which the parties are located, as well as the strength of the...

Karkoš, Daniel ; Kasáková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the Cod wars, a series of disputes between the United Kingdom and Iceland. The disputes were triggered by Iceland's unilateral extention of its territorial waters. It was caused by Iceland's fear of foreign fishermen's negative impact on local economy and culture. The disputes are unique, for the warring parties were partners within NATO. The disputes are nevertheless mostly interesting for the fact that their end was rather unexpected. Every time victory was on Iceland's side. This thesis investigates, what the reasons for such an outcome were. The investigation is done by an analysis of Icelandic national interests, devided into three categories with help of relevant theories of international relations. The outcome of this analysis is an identification of Icelandic advantages.
Strategic role of the Diego Garcia military base from Cold War until present
Hřivna, Václav ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Ludvík, Jan (referee)
The concern of the diploma thesis is the geostrategic role of the base on the island Diego Garcia. It deals chronologically with the evolvement of this role since the base was established until the present time. Apart from the analysis of the extent, motivation and reasons of the evolvement, the explanation of all these is provided as well. The research is based on the theories formulated by admiral Alfred T. Mahan who was primarily concerned with the agenda of a naval superpower. The issue of bases is directly linked to that subject. The analysis pays attention to physical development of the facilities on the island which to a certain extent reflects the strategic role of the base. It also further examines the regional and global context which is deemed to be crucial for the better understanding of the function the base had for the United States. Practical usage of the base is analysed for a better explanation of the role the base played as some of the contemporary documents are still classified and unavailable. According to the research, the role the base played changed several times but it is very difficult to point out the main factor that caused the change. Most probably, it was caused by a combination of several factors.
