Somatic work: How people relate to the olfactory experience with the example of foreigners in the CR.
Zídková, Kateřina ; Spalová, Barbora (advisor) ; Tesárek, Jan (referee)
This thesis is dealing with the sense of smell and how do we relate to it in our social lives. I was looking into the mechanics of somatic work. It is a term defined by Vannini and Waskul (2008) as a process whereby a somatic perception undergoes a reflexive interpretation. Somatic perception isn't something that just happens, it is actually a process which yield to socialization. On the basis of 8 qualitative interviews and 5 consequential smell diaries using the hermeneutic analysis I identified, how and in which situations do foreigners in the Czech Republic work with their sense of smell and olfactory experience. It is mostly in situations connected with food, places, nature and people. Each of these situations I examine in a separated chapter. Somatic work is being done in compliance with social norms. Within these social norms rules for handling odors are negotiated. So, I also looked into how these social norms function in connection with smells. I also described, how odors relate to memory and what meanings do people connect with it.

Kohout, Ondřej ; Kropáček, Luboš (advisor) ; Válová, Dita (referee)
The focus of the thesis is an explanation of specifics of Ibn Bâjja's political philosophy as it is presented in his most famous writing The Governance of the Solitary (Tadbír al-mutawahhid). The thesis should introduce how is Ibn Bâjja's thinking based on work of ancient authors and what are its foundations. This is the reason why it will be necessary to look into al-Fārābī and his political philosophy, however, it will be also important to see how much is Ibn Bâjja's work influenced by thinking of Plato's and Aristotle's politically oriented writings. Despite the historical aspect of the thesis, it will be crucial to show possible parallels to contemporary political thinking and the status of philosopher/intellectual in society. A part of the thesis is also Czech translation of the first chapter of The Governance of the Solitary focusing on two fundamental concepts of Ibn Bâjja's philosophy - "governance" and "solitary".

Pastyříková, Iveta ; Bažil, Martin (advisor) ; Fořt, Bohumil (referee)
IVETA PASTYŘÍKOVÁ: ORDER, PROGRESS, AND IDEAL GOVERNMENT IN CLAUDIAN'S EPIC DE RAPTU PROSERPINAE ABSTRACT The aim of the diploma thesis is to show how late Ancient poet Claudius Claudianus deals with the problem of ideal government in the mythological epic De Raptu Proserpinae, by which strategies he exhorts his reader to evaluate Jupiter's rule in the world of the poem and to compare it with the situation in the real world. The chosen method is the theory of fictional worlds. Firstly, the thesis outlines the relation between the fictional world of the epic and the real world, then, the attention is paid to the essential question of this fictional world, ideal government. The thesis presents the prefaces of the epic as entrances into the fictional world foreshadowing topics elaborated in the world of the poem, where the ruler Jupiter has a difficult task ahead of him: to harmonize progress with protection against chaos. The last chapter summarizes the author's strategies and compares the epic with Claudian's other poems.

First part of the work analyzes narrative elements which are found in races and factions of Starcraft univerze and reaches the conclusion that through them the game operates with religiously relevant classification categories of purity and dirtiness, order and chaos. The second part utilizes these results in an analysis of narrative structures understood as relations and interactions between particular races and factions, and shows that categories of order and chaos/purity and dirtiness are functionally analogous to Victor Turner's categories of structure and anti-structure. Conclusion of this analysis claims that Starcraft thematizes the problem of one's oppozite's prevalence over the other. The third part summarizes conclusions of both previous parts, gives examples of order/chaos relations in historical religions and shows how narrative structures present these beliefs as problematic. Subsequently this work points out the identical beliefs celebrating the balance between opposites found in New Age, tries to explain the...
The Relationship of Hedonism and Humanism
Jerman, Ondřej ; Jirsa, Jakub (advisor) ; Švec, Ondřej (referee)
The diploma thesis discusses the relationship between humanism and hedonism. However, its main objective is not to explain the terms in their summarized historical relatedness but to point out their internal coherence. The fundamental issue the thesis deals with is the fact that sentient beings suffer from sorrow. Enumerating the reasons why it is important to search for a solution would be a waste of our reader's time. It is necessary to understand that we don't expect empirical science to solve the problem since - despite the enthusiasm significant for this modern period - has not introduced any relief from sorrow. Here comes the opportunity for philosophy and, eventually, ethics. In its first part the thesis maps out the context of humanism and hedonism, studies their apparent as well as hidden nature, and lays the conceivable foundations of humanistic hedonism. The following section suggests a set of particular steps. Adhering to these instructions makes it possible to experience delight and to eliminate sorrow.
