Czech - French Interaction and its significance for modern Czech pantomime
Vizváry, Radim ; PETIŠKOVÁ, Ladislava (advisor) ; HYVNAR, Jan (referee)
The work examines Czech ? French relations and its impact on modern Czech pantomime after 1945 in three respects. The aim of this work was to create an overview mapping French contacts with leading figures of modern Czech pantomime. The first section is concerned with historical perspectives. Based on the direct testimony of participants, research, and the discovery of yet unpublished archive material, I introduce new facts and verify the historical context during the renewal of interest in pantomime art in Czechoslovakia after 1945. While I was guided by historical events in interpreting this considerable body of material, I endeavored to record and develop the most significant events in broader and deeper contexts. The second aspect of my research focuses on a comparison of individual French mime techniques which have been and continue to be used here. I then attempt to compare these with my own method. I particularly understand them from a practical point of view, as I have learned and mastered these approaches and even adopted some for my own performing and teaching. In the third section, I assess the influence of French mime art on my artistic activity with respect to my teaching practice and own artistic work. This was most evident in the creation of Mesdames & Messieurs, Deburau!, where I played the main character, and while directing the opera Theater Beyond the Gate by B. Martinů.

"Whip Inflation Now" and Its Impact on Inflation and Unemployment in the United States in the 1970's
Sirový, Michal ; Tajovský, Ladislav (advisor) ; Ráček, Martin (referee)
The topic of this thesis is the Gerald Ford's program WIN as a policy aimed at inflation. WIN is certainly determined by the time it was developer in. The essential aspects are unemployment rate, which had reached 9 percents in the 1970s, and the neglect of monetary policy. Ford's announced policy was the exact opposite of that of Nixon's. The infamous saving in the times of crisis was relatively mild, thus the speculations of an attempt of Ford's PR is an explanation. The CPI level had lowered in 1976 from 9.1 to 5.8 percent, yet the inflation had decreased only in the short-term, and it is a matter of discussion if WIN played any part in that. The relation betwen unemployment and inflation will be analysed at the background of Phillips curve in the second part of the paper.

Gambling as a Black Hole of the Social Universe
Horáček, Michal ; Abu Ghosh, Yasar (advisor) ; Grygar, Jakub (referee)
This master's thesis aims both to present empirical criticism of the published case studies of gambling, in particular the Deep Play by Clifford Geertz, which is the most cited one, and to propose such a methodology which would enable us to derive more meaningful data from the ethnographic material on gambling. In this context it is also needed to question the conventional conceptual categories which are internally conflicting as appears both in common speech and in the works of the social science scholars such as Johan Huizing, Eugen Fink, Roger Caillois, Gerda Reith and Jackson Lears.

Špryngarová, Jana ; Wagnerová, Irena (referee) ; Štikar, Jiří (advisor)
Traffic safety problems are often discussed and researched, especially recently. Psychology plays an irretrievable part in solving these problems. Submitted diploma theses focuses on specific segment of these problems, the area of the traffic safety related to drivers, who do not have the driving as the main scope of employment, though they need a car to perform their work - fleet car drivers. Emphasis is placed on definitions of the key-terms and summary of theoretical pieces of knowledge, taking in consideration that the issue has not been researched extensively. In practical part of the thesis the opportunities and limits of the work with fleet car drivers are discussed. Pieces of knowledge that aroused from the thesis lie in the area of mental capacity of the fleet car drivers, in the area of general approach to trainings at the hands of the employers and also in the area of the administration of the records regarding the accidents (above all for the purposes of their importance for the subsequent work on raising the safety of fleet car drivers). As the most important result from diploma it appears the project for specialists from different areas, mainly from the area of traffic psychology, to enter the problems of fleet car driving with more urgency.

Kuncová, Lenka ; Doležal, Jiří (referee) ; Dovalil, Vít (advisor)
This diploma thesis "Adverbials in German and Czech" is exploring adverbials in Czech and German grammars and further more it explores their presentation in German textbooks. First part deals with German grammars - what is their conception of syntax, how do they determine constituent of a sentence and how they then classify adverbials. Comparison is made on basis of traditional grammar, interest is given to dependency grammar and immediate constituent analysis. Czech grammar is explained shortly in second part, followed by description of adverbials found in Czech language. Semantics play major when classifying adverbials. Third part of thesis is dealing with the textbooks which are available in Czech Republic and which could be used for teaching of German language. There are not many textbooks edited in Czech Republic which would be considering adverbials in German language. The division of Ergänzung and Angabe could be found in textbooks edited in Germany. This division is important when considering word order.

Transformations of the Gothic in Victorian Ghost Stories
Bambušková, Tereza ; Wallace, Clare (advisor) ; Beran, Zdeněk (referee)
Thesis abstract This thesis will focus on the ways in which the transformations in nineteenth-century Gothic stories mirror the gradual changes in the Victorian society's notions about perception and about the metaphysical. The nineteenth century marks a time when advances in science made it clear that not seeing something does not mean that it does not exist, and when psychologists made it clear that seeing something does not necessarily mean it does exist. Moreover, the nineteenth century was a time when religious notions that were previously accepted without question started to be doubted. When people lost their faith in the unseen and at the same time became aware that their eyes are not sufficient to see everything and that their mind may play tricks on them, the notion of reality was increasingly problematized, which is made especially clear in the genre of the Gothic. It could be argued that while the basic tropes of the Gothic remain more or less the same; however, the way they are used, the reactions of the protagonists as well as the general outlook of the story are problematized by newly introduced ideas about vision and human mind. It could be said that in many cases there is no longer a clear boundary between the protagonist and the 'other' of the story, which can often be interpreted as an...
