Šišková, Martina ; Chalupský, Petr (advisor) ; Topolovská, Tereza (referee)
The thesis "The Reflection of Social, Economic and Cultural Changes in Britain in Selected Early Victorian Fiction" aims to investigate the relationship between the First Industrial Revolution in the Great Britain and the English fiction of this era. It deals with the question if the selected authors reflected major industrial and social changes in their writing and if so, what particular events they described. Further, it is focused on the relationship between the novelists and their works, in other words, if there is any connection between their class origin and their point of view of the social problematic displayed in particular novels. It also tries to find out if the prose writers identified themselves with their novel characters and/or if they projected their own life experience into their stories. The work concerns with literary movements represented in selected early Victorian novels: Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, Charles Dickens's Great Expectations, Hard Times, Oliver Twist and The Personal History of David Copperfield the Younger and William Makepeace Thackeray's Vanity Fair. Key words: Social changes, the Industrial Revolution, the Victorian society, social mobility, the class conflict, the novel

"The Dead" - A critical compilation of existing interpretations
Fíl, Lukáš ; Pilný, Ondřej (advisor) ; Armand, Louis (referee)
The essay collects and discusses several reading perspectives of 'The Dead,' a short-story by James Joyce from his collection Dubliners (1914). It contends that the story is very much open to creative reading and subjective interpretation, as it may be seen as a platform for various discourses, hidden and unfinished stories, themes, historical testimonies, etc. It argues that 'The Dead' even successfully dramatizes the very event of interpreting a literary text. At the same time, the paper pays attention to how the story is closely tied to its author's personality, life history, and how the whole collection to great extent derives from Joyce's overall scepticism held towards his countrymen in Dublin. The chapter "A Biographical Reading" discusses James Joyce as an interpretive principle for the story. It reflects on Richard Ellmann's essay "The Backgrounds of 'The Dead'" and notes its positive aspects, but it also acknowledges drawbacks of what is called a biographical method of reading 'The Dead.' The next chapter, "The Dubliners Project," starts by outlining two reading perspectives that don't defy one another, but may rather be seen as mutually enriching. The first sees 'The Dead' as an individual piece of writing, whereas the second as an integral part of the collection. The chapter then...

Changes of narrative technique in Kageró Nikki
Miko, Michael ; Švarcová, Zdeňka (referee) ; Tirala, Martin (advisor)
My thesis Changes of Narrative Technique in Kager Nikki attempts to analyse one of the first Japanese literary diaries (nikki), of mid 10th century, and one of the so-called four great literary diaries of the Heian period (794-1185), in terms of narrative techniques used by its author, known today as "the Mother of Mitchitsuna." Introduction, containing the purpose, objectives and method of my thesis, and my introductory remarks on the theory of narration are followed by a summary of some basic biographical data of the author where it was my ambition to concisely outline her life story and to review both her literary work and legacy. This leads to another section, which strives to further organise relevant information on the diary and to define it in the context of literary history. Approximately one third through, the thesis begins to describe in more general terms the diary's structure with regard to its story build-up and the emphasis on gradual transformation of writer's prosaic style, inseparably intertwined with the diary's storyline. Subsequently, the analysis reveals some narrative techniques typically used by the writer, in an attempt to describe them and as a result to underpin their alterations in time. Concluding remarks try to definitively assess the overall relevance of the methods used. Annex...

Dramatist and performer Werner Schwab. A contribution to Austrian postmodernism
Narwová, Michaela ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor) ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (referee)
The thesis gives a comprehensive picture of Werner Schwab, Austrian playwright and performer. He ranked among the most performed German-speaking authors at the time of his death in 1994. The main objective of this work, whose basis lies in Schwab's dramatic production, is to provide a comprehensive monographic study. The thesis deals not only with the dramas, but also with their relationship to the theatrical production of Thomas Bernhard and Elfriede Jelinek. The chapter on the author's personal life is followed by chapters "Postdramatic Theatre", "Theatre of Cruelty", and "Folk Play", where you can find the answer to the question of the place of Schwab's drama in the overall concept of literature at the end of the 20th century. Particular attention is paid to the unique language usage he developed, called "Schwabisch" after the author.

Signifying in the fiction of Charles W. Chesnutt
Koy, Christoper Erwin ; Ulmanová, Hana (advisor) ; Veselá, Pavla (referee) ; Jařab, Josef (referee)
(English): The dissertation is fundamentally a study of intertextuality. Charles W. Chesnutt (1858-1932) was an African American novelist, essayist and short story writer whose voracious reading habits of classical Western literature as well as the writing of his contemporaries had a substantial impact on his writing, an impact which is investigated for the first time applying the theory of African American rhetoric of Henry Louis Gates. The study applies the notion of "signifying" (as Gates describes it in The Signifying Monkey) to Chesnutt and his use of fiction by Ovid, Apulieus, Walter Scott, William Makepeace Thackeray, George Washington Cable and Albion Tourgée. The research explores how Chesnutt quotes from, revises and parodies, (among other mimetic strategies), the language, plots and characters of the aforementioned writers.

The story of Wang Zhaojun in Cao Yu's eponymous drama

Region of the visionary. Spiritism from the region under the Krkonoše mountains in Czech literature
