Representation of special classes of combinatorial objects
Scholleová, Barbora ; Nešetřil, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Loebl, Martin (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to bring together two areas of the graph theory. We first give a brief exposition of graph homomorphisms and related notions that directs to the definition of the replacement operation by using an appropriate replacement graph. The tree-depth is investigated as one of considerable chara- cteristics of each graph. Finally we focus on category representations in the category Graph of all finite graphs and Graphk of all finite graphs with tree-depth at most k.

Stehlíková, Zuzana ; Šmídová, Olga (advisor) ; Trusinová, Romana (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the representation and categorisation of old age and elderly care and their changes in media discourse of daily newspaper Blesk. Theory focuses on definitions of elderly and description of seniors and practices of elderly care in the Czech Republic. It describes changes of old age discourse in connection with the development of social policy and expert knowledge. It describes the concepts of representation and categorisation and their possible impacts in the form of stigmatisation, stereotyping and ageism. It discusses media as resources of symbolic power, ideology and discourse and sets out media representation of elderly. Related empirical part is based on qualitative discourse analysis of articles from Blesk in years 2007 and 2011. It discusses the outcomes with respect to changes of discourse and representation, stereotypes and active old age. It distinguishes three types of senior representation - like normal, stigmatized and active. Thematic distribution and stigmatisation of elderly constructs symbolic subordination of elderly as a population category. Care is described only rarely and isn't offered as the solution of the elderly's frailty.
Representation of Jiri Kajinek in Czech print in 2010
Pošepná, Kateřina ; Trampota, Tomáš (advisor) ; Hronová, Tereza (referee)
The main concern of the thesis is the ability of the media to construct the image of criminals and it is demonstrated on the case of Jiří Kajínek. Criminality is a special topic most of the population has no personal experience with, and, therefore, they have to rely completely on the information offered by media. Jiří Kajínek is the most famous czech prisoner and, in its practical part, the thesis tries to explore the way the publicistic titles presented his case to public in 2010. Most of the examined titles takes Kajínek's side and does not offer balanced information regarding the case. This partiality is reflected mainly in the way of signification associated with Kajínek, in the framing and in the form of particular articles. The thesis then observes the influence of the Kajínek movie on his media presentment and its development. It focuses at the amount of media space given as well as at the way of the representation itself. Differences in both aspects have been found in particular titles.

Krystýnová, Pavla ; Láb, Filip (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
The diploma thesis "Visual representation of Africa in magazine Týden and Reflex " deals with visual representation of African continent. Africa does not appear in Czech printed media very often although the readers are interested in this topic. We live in the time that is intensively influenced by visual perception on human being. Photography is the medium capable of emotively showing the everyday life in Africa. This is the reason why this diploma thesis analyses the visual images (the photographs) with African themes which were printed in the magazines Týden and Reflex in 2005 and 2009. The main part of thesis is an analysis of the photographs describing the way how these magazines represent life in Africa. As a method of work I have chosen quantitative content analysis of photographs printed in magazines Týden and Reflex in 2005 and 2009. The theoretical framework of this thesis is summarized in the first three chapters. The first chapter deals with classifyig Africa . The second chapter is devoted to the photographic image in the world today and the history of depicting Africa by Czech photographers. The third chapter is focused on the representation of developing countries in the media and the issue of stereotyping. Visual analysis will try to show whether there are fixed ways of representing...

Jelínková, Milena ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Vochocová, Lenka (referee)
The thesis deals with a compare of media image of Topolanek, Fischer and Necas government in periodical Tyden. I took two aims - first, to find out if any opinion inclination or political orientation is expressed in articles about Czech governments published in the periodical Tyden, second, to compare media image of all three governments among themselves and to trace potential differences. The theoretical section focuses on objectivity and bias, construction and representation. Substantial part of the theory is comprised of specific political communication and mediatisation together with trends in this field recognized in last decades. The empirical section is composed by quantitative analysis that compares representative articles and it is added by an content analysis of front pages of the periodical Tyden. Regardless of a fact, that the Jan Fischer government was very popular in public, the media picture of this particular government is rather negative comparing others. On the contrary there were found specific features showing that the Mirek Topolanek government was pictured more substantially. In generally the periodical Tyden uses negativity and stereotypes in articles about governments but in no case this is a predominant procedure of media products construct. The media picture of last three...
The Mašín Myth. Ideologies in Czech Literature and Culture since the Second Half of the 20th century until the Present Day
Švéda, Josef ; Janoušek, Pavel (advisor) ; Bílek, Petr (referee) ; Bauer, Michal (referee)
This dissertation analyses narratives of the Mašín brothers and their father, Josef Mašín senior. The Mašín brothers established what they called 'a resistance group' against the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia, which between 1951 and 1952 killed three people. The brothers, alongside the other member of the group, Milan Paumer, escaped from the country in 1953, heading for the Western sectors of Berlin. Despite more than 20,000 East German and Soviet troops hunting them, the group reached West Berlin safely. Later, the brothers went to the USA where they joined the U.S. army. The dissertation analyzes a whole range of discourses including newspaper articles, historical papers, books, detective stories, novels, memoirs and also one episode of the Czechoslovak television series, Třicet případů majora Zemana ('Major Zeman's Thirty Cases'), entitled Strach ('Fear'), from 1975. The dissertation is conceptually embedded in cultural studies and critical theory. Drawing on Roland Barthesʼs work on mythologies, Hayden Whiteʼs theory of history and Slavoj Žižekʼs theory of ideology, the dissertation considers the relationship of the Mašín brothersʼ narrative representations with respect to the dominant ideology of the time. The first chapter of the dissertation deals with narratives produced in Communist...

Šulcová, Jana ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Gerbery, Juraj (referee)
The thesis "Medial muck-raking of sexual affairs in the Church in Czech press in spring 2010" through the use of medial ruts, stereotypes and logic, inquires into medial texts from the springtime 2010, which have referenced to sexual affairs in Catholic Church. Based on medial theories (gatekeeping, social construction of reality, agenda setting etc.) the thesis follows up the reflection of the theme and specifics of media discourse. This view is complemented with interviews with members of the Church, which give the thesis out-of- media extent. Qualitative part of the thesis takes sexual affairs in Church as illustrative theme, which is meant in connection with the Roman Catholic Church reflected by Czech media. The thesis also attempts to generalize the actual medial reflection of the Church on the background of current medial trends. It tries to offer a way how to improve the relationship between two part of culture - media and the Roman Catholic Church. To put the thesis into context it will be provided with information about history of the Roman Catolic Church and relationship of Czech society to matters of the church, because it determinates perception of medial news about this theme.
