Mathematics on the chess board
Šperl, Jiří ; Jančařík, Antonín (advisor) ; Pilous, Derek (referee)
TITTLE: Mathematics on the chessboard AUTHOR: Jiří Šperl DEPARTMENT: The Department of mathematics and the teaching of mathematics SUPERVISOR: RNDr. Antonín Jančařík, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: The main subject of my thesis is mathematical problems on the chessboard using chess pieces. The work aims to demonstrate how a secondary school student would approach and solve several typical mathematical tasks of this nature. Consequently, it outlines ways to incorporate chessboard mathematical problems and exercises in mathematical classes. Moreover, the thesis includes a compact collection of solved problems on the chessboard that can serve as an inspiring source of unconventional mathematical tasks in conventional mathematical education. My own mathematical research forms a major part of the thesis. The research was conducted as a series of tests in three school classes. In order to achieve a high de- gree of objectivity classes of students with different specializations were selected to take part in the tests. The participating classes were also of different age groups. The theoretical part of the thesis takes a look at the past of the subject and presents several interesting historical problems concerning the mathematics on the chess- board. Last but not least, the thesis contains a discussion of solutions of the...
Pythagorian Theorem in CLIL lessons
Dubová, Libuše ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Procházková, Lenka (referee)
This diploma thesis, titled "Pythagorean Theorem in CLIL lessons", deals with one of the possible strategies in bilingual education - CLIL method which links teaching of a non- linguistic subject and a foreign language, mathematics and English, in this case. For the realization of CLIL method I have chosen the topic of the introduction to Pythagorean Theorem. The aim of this thesis was to check whether the chosen topic is suitable for CLIL lessons, then the influence of a foreign language on the active involvement of pupils in the lesson and on understanding of the subject matter. At the beginning, I focus on general integration of the content subject and a foreign language and then I describe the preparation of the experiment. The core of this thesis is the project of the CLIL lesson. The project was realized in the experimental groups, the gained data have been processed on the base of observation and analysis of the final individual work and the questionnaire. The results show the potential of the CLIL method as a new possibility for bilingual teaching of content subjects.
Possibilities of interactive whiteboard in education
Kalousová, Petra ; Lustig, František (advisor) ; Procházka, Josef (referee)
TITLE: Possibilities of interactive whiteboard in education ABSTRAKT: The dissertation is focused on the usage of didactic technology especially interactive whiteboards in education of mathematics in elementary and secondary schools. The theoretical part deals with particular types of whiteboards and software of different companies. It introduces the basics and possibilities in use of interactive whiteboard in education of mathematics. The dissertation also contains processed and practice-tested lessons created by ACTIV Studio software for the chosen subject of the mathematics curriculum - Sets. This effort should be a good inspiration for all pedagogues in their initial work with interactive whiteboards. KEY WORDS: Information and Communication Technologies, interactive whiteboards, ACTIV Studio, Mathematics, advanced method of education
Personal and social education in a constructivist-oriented teaching of mathematics at the 2nd level of primary school
Prikner, Milan ; Zhouf, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Vondrová, Naďa (referee)
This thesis addresses the use and inclusion of cross-cutting theme of personal and social education in the constructivist-oriented mathematics teaching. The thesis has two main objectives, to describe the scope for personal and social education in mathematics teaching and to suggest learning activities that show interlinking of these regions. The main section is being created by these activities. All have been tested in practice and subsequently evaluated.
Mathematical Skills Applied to Teaching of Geography at High School In the Topic The Earth as a Cosmic Orb
Matýsková, Pavla ; Netrdová, Pavlína (advisor) ; Marada, Miroslav (referee)
Matýsková, P. (2010): Mathematical skills applied to the teaching of geography at secondary schools in the topic the Earth as a cosmic orb. Department of Social Geography and Regional Development, Charles University in Prague. Submitted diploma thesis deals with interdisciplinary relationships between mathematics and geography at grammar schools in the topic the Earth as a cosmic orb. The relationships are generally described from the point of view of three curriculum forms (intended, implemented and achieved). In the area of the intended curriculum there is an analysis of curriculum documents carried out, especially of the Framework educational programme and of selected school educational programmes. Subsequently, the links between selected secondary school textbooks of geography and mathematics are evaluated on the basis of required curriculum, its quality, intelligibility and occurrence of examples from the practice. The subchapters of the selected unit, in which an application of mathematical skills can be found, are defined in detail and specified on the basis of the carried analysis. Deep, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the teachers at selected grammar schools for the purpose of the study of the implemented curriculum. The achieved curriculum was found out on the basis of the...
The Influence of a Foreign Language on the Communication in the Bilingual Teaching of Mathematics
Ernyeiová, Jana ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Pokorná, Věra (referee) ; Nýdl, Václav (referee)
This work refers to the topic of bilingual mathematics education. It is focused on monitoring the communicational influences of teacher's and pupil's language, categorization of the disturbing effects and possibilities, how the teacher should prepare for them and how to solve them. A significant role plays the reflection of the teacher, as the results were done on the basis of action research during teaching in England, Germany and the Czech Republic. The teaching was realized in a second language as well for the teacher as for the pupils. The teacher was at the same time experimenter as well as author of this work. The theoretical part results from dealing with scientific literature about bilingualism, bilingual education, methodology of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), relations between first language, language of mathematics and the foreign language. In the practical part an analysis of lessons performed in mathematics with the subject of probability is carried out. The teaching was focused on playing a game with dice and deciding whether the game is fair or not. The lessons were audio taped and transcriptions of the spoken language were made. An analysis of the language, teacher's mistakes, communicational interference, proportional relations on communication of the pupils and of the...

Estimates in mathematics at basic school.
HRANÍČEK, Antonín
This diploma thesis called Estimations in Mathematics at Elementary School is created as an auxiliary teaching material. It acquaints the readers with the concept of mathematical estimation and presents its basic divisions. It also provides graphic instructions how to make estimations and it contains plenty of problems which serve as a systematic practicing and training of the ability of estimating. In addition, the form of individual problems shows spheres in which estimating is convenient to develop. At the end of the work there are presented research-oriented problems with the need of estimation.
Historical development of numerical methods and computational techniques.
DIVÍŠKOVÁ, Michaela
In my bachelor thesis I deal with historical development of numerical methods and computational techniques. In the first chapter, the introduction of the concept of number and the writing process. In the second chapter, I present the basic numerical methods and algorithms for a variety of mathematical operations. In the third chapter, I will devote counting techniques and aids to facilitate calculations. The final chapter, I focus on computation of periodic rational and irrational numbers.
