Let's give life to recent history ... or how to teach contemporary history in high schools

The diploma thesis entitled Let's revive recent history… or how to teach contemporary history in secondary schools is conceived in the form of a methodological manual for secondary school teachers who would like to understand their teaching of contemporary history in an interesting, research and effective way. It outlines the obstacles due to which teachers avoid contemporary history, and compares and evaluates history textbooks, which are among the most commonly used in teaching at secondary schools. It is also clear here how much space is devoted to contemporary history in these textbooks and which topics of contemporary history are preferred by the framework educational program. The work is focused on Czechoslovak and Czech contemporary history, for which it offers the possibility of using various Internet platforms, which are directly intended for teachers or from them can draw inspiration for their teaching. Last but not least, it also offers several activities involving working with sources or other period artifacts that can be used in class. Comparison of the didactic potential of Austrian and Czech history textbooks on the example of selected historical events

The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyze and compare the didactic potential of Czech and Austrian history textbooks regarding to their anchoring in the educational system and working with historical thinking and historical literacy, generally with the development of students' key competencies. The thesis took into account differences in the educational systems of both countries, the curriculum and, overall, worked with the goals of modern history teaching. The comparison was made on historical events that connect these two countries, and the core of the thesis is the analysis of processing these topics in terms of the Research-Based teaching goals. The output of this thesis is a specific teaching unit that works with Czech and Austrian textbooks and tries to cover the main theses of modern didactics of history. Application of French Methods of Text Analysis into the Czech History Teaching

This diploma thesis is focusing on the application of the French text analysis method in history teaching in the Czech Republic. The objective of this thesis is to introduce the French method not only theoretically, but also to create specific lessons based on it. The terminology uses the term method for the translation of the French term méthode. The basis for this thesis is mainly drown from the French history textbooks, the interviews with the teachers and the history lessons in French. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part deals with the introduction of history teaching in France, including the textbooks used at both primary and secondary schools. Furthermore, it presents the individual methods of working in history lessons according to the French method. In the practice part, this thesis presents the lessons prepared for history lessons in Czech, which were realized during the school year 2018/2019 at the bilingual section of the Jan Neruda Grammar School in Prague. These lessons were created for the purpose of this work based on the French method or were translated from French history textbooks. The Changes and Style of History Teaching at the High School and Secondary Grammar School in Sušice between 1953 and 1971

In connection with the social and political changes which occurred in the year 1948 when the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia took control of the political power, the views on the role of secondary education and the way in which humanities were taught changed very dynamically during the coming years. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe the change of History teaching between 1953 and 1971 using the example of the Eleven-Year High School ("Jedenáctiletá střední škola") in Sušice, the Secondary School of General Education ("Střední všeobecně vzdělávací škola") in Sušice and the Secondary Grammar School ("Gymnázium") in Sušice. Using primarily the aproach of oral history to get authentic narration and recollections of former students and History teachers, this thesis shows the historical development of History teaching in Czechoslovakia in general perspective, alternatively in comparison with another high school of this type located in Klatovy region, using a comparative method. Due to the use of witness narratives, the history of everyday life at school can be incorporated into the work, to a limited extent. This thesis also describes the brief history of the high school in Sušice and the history of education at general secondary schools in Czechoslovakia.
Image of Luxembourg in Czech history textbooks in the 19th and 20th century

The objective of this diploma thesis is to characterize the image of Luxembourgs in the Czech history textbooks in the 19th and 20th century. The work is based on the assumption that the history education takes a significant part in making a young person's identity. The thesis describes the development of this image and the way in which the educational literature reflected the atmosphere of the day and its transformation in the context of historical development. The dynamic development of the image of the Czech history of 14th and 15th centuries is the central theme of the work. It will be mainly focused on the historical figures of Bohemian Luxembourg kings: John of Luxembourg, Charles IV, Wenceslaus IV and Sigismund of Luxembourg.

Diploma Thesis Project teaching - Monuments and personalities in Uhříněves is a project that was created with the primary school pupils as an example of the possible use of regional history in teaching. The thesis contains theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part is a summary of information from available literature. In this part of the thesis is closer introduced to the benefits and importance of regional history for history teaching in primary schools , along with anchoring regional history in the curriculum. There are also shown working methods, organizational forms and teaching aids, which the teacher can use in assigning regional history teaching. The practical part presents the project itself, its preparation, implementation and evaluation of the effectiveness of including the problems that occurred during the project, and the possibilities of how to avoid the problem. There are also outlined options for further use of the project. The thesis includes both text and image attachments that document the project.
Journals of teaching history as a practical methodical support to Czechoslovak teachers of history in the period 1948-1970

This master thesis deals with history teaching from 1948 up to 1970. The main focus is not put on the way how the teaching looked really like, but it deals with the teaching methods how history should be taught. The major sources are journals of education for history teaching, mostly Dějepis ve škole and the preceding and following journals. The basic question is whether the magazines could have really helped the teachers in terms of teaching methodology and what was this support like. In the first chapter the history of education is described, the second chapter deals with the journals of education for history teaching. Next is described how a lesson should look like, the whole-class presentation, examination, revision, using a textbook. Special chapter deals with various tools for history teaching, including maps, images, audiovisual aids and literature. Moreover there is covered regional history, excursions, cooperation with museums and archives. In the end the basic question is answered; the journals were able to help the teachers well, many interesting and inspiring articles were in them. Project in history lessons at secondary grammar schools of the Administrative Region of Ústí nad Labem

The final thesis deals with an application of project within history lessons at secondary grammar schools of the Administrative Region of Ústí nad Labem .The thesis summarizes the basic theoretical findings on a projects realisation together with findings gathered by the empirical research at secondary grammar schools of Administrative Region of Ústí nad Labem. The research focused on recognising a present status of incorporating and using projects in the history lessons, and on the experience of pupils and teachers with this specific teaching strategy. On the grounds of connecting these findings, the thesis provides the reflection of possible using of projects in the course of history lessons (not only as a supplement of ordinary lessons). The thesis recognises a present status of projects realisation within history lessons, including the favoured topics, a way of realisation, outcomes, and a brief summary of particular projects offered by external organisations. The thesis deals with positives and negatives of projects realisation in accordance with opinions of pupils and teachers of secondary grammar schools of Administrative Region of Ústí nad Labem. The thesis also contains two proposals of history projects that might be used by teachers for creating their own projects.
The concept of regional history in history teaching in secondary schools in the town of Pribram

The diploma work is focused on the conception of regional history teaching in the city of Příbram. It brings an up-to-date view on regional history seen through didactis and tries to show contemporary condition in the regional historical research. The whole work is divided into three big parts. The first one is aimed on the term region, on its meaning and understanding. Further it maps significant regional historians and researchers, it briefly draws near their work and makes us familiar with important personalities of Příbram regional research. It also deals with the history of the town Příbram and its closest surroundings. Data obtained from an empirical research, which was taken at seven high schools in Příbram where history as a subject is taught in final exams branches classes, are elaborated in the second part of the work. The found out facts about the state of regional history in history teaching are then compared with the former aims and hypothesis. The third part is focused on certain methodical possibilities of taking advantage of regional history in history teaching at high schools. Two proposals for project teaching methods which might be used in lectures by the teachers are presented.
