Novel Methods for Natural Language Generation in Spoken Dialogue Systems
Dušek, Ondřej ; Jurčíček, Filip (advisor) ; Ircing, Pavel (referee) ; Žabokrtský, Zdeněk (referee)
Title: Novel Methods for Natural Language Generation in Spoken Dialogue Systems Author: Ondřej Dušek Department: Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics Supervisor: Ing. Mgr. Filip Jurčíček, Ph.D., Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics Abstract: This thesis explores novel approaches to natural language generation (NLG) in spoken dialogue systems (i.e., generating system responses to be presented the user), aiming at simplifying adaptivity of NLG in three respects: domain portability, language portability, and user-adaptive outputs. Our generators improve over state-of-the-art in all of them: First, our gen- erators, which are based on statistical methods (A* search with perceptron ranking and sequence-to-sequence recurrent neural network architectures), can be trained on data without fine-grained semantic alignments, thus simplifying the process of retraining the generator for a new domain in comparison to previous approaches. Second, we enhance the neural-network-based gener- ator so that it takes preceding dialogue context into account (i.e., user's way of speaking), thus producing user-adaptive outputs. Third, we evaluate sev- eral extensions to the neural-network-based generator designed for producing output in morphologically rich languages, showing improvements in Czech generation. In...
From Linguistic Aberration to the Subversion of Power: Literary Code-switching and Code-mixing as Tools for Upsetting the Language of Power and Expressing Expatriation
Zelenková, Alena ; Jirsa, Tomáš (advisor) ; Pokorný, Martin (referee)
This thesis explores literary code-switching, i.e. multilingual aspects within a single speech, as a key polyphonic structural element in the selected works. First, it analyzes Gloria Anzaldúa's Borderlands: The New Mestiza = La Frontera (1987) as a work, where the author seeks to establish a literary tradition that would reflect the life in borderlands and the given community through a new language. Secondly, the language of photography and multilingual speech patterns in W. G. Sebald's The Emigrants (1992) are considered as vital elements of the authenticity play. The following chapter deals with Franz Kafka's short stories, where gestures form an essential part of, if not the whole stories, and determine the fragmentary nature of such writing. Finally, the importance of language of power, the discourse of social realism altogether with their emergence into private and intimate discussions through repetitions and variations is commented upon in Václav Havel's play The Garden Party (1963).
The Cross-curricular topic Multicultural Education in English classes
Hessová, Lenka ; Betáková, Lucie (advisor) ; Hanušová, Světlana (referee) ; Černá, Monika (referee)
Abstract In our dissertation we address the needs rooting in the ongoing process of systematic efforts to improve the Czech educational system. Mainly, we focus on the question of how to implement the cross-curricular topic Multicultural Education into English language classes at lower and upper secondary schools. As Multicultural Education, along with the other cross-curricular topics, has become an obligatory and essential part of the reformed Czech curricula. The author of this dissertation is employed with the English Department at the Faculty of Education of The University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice. That is why we aim to introduce the theoretical background and history of the cross-curricular topic Multicultural Education in the Czech educational system. Then, based on that theoretical background, we shall design and run a course at the Pedagogical faculty for our students (teachers-to-be) that will provide them with sufficient amount of theory. Within the course the students will be given enough practical examples of the implementation of Multicultural Education into English classes when combining cultural and linguistic aims and at the end of the course we will allow the students to design and try such a class during their peer teaching. We will also publish the results of the course for...

Analýza dvou latinských překladů Husovy České nedělní postily v rkp. Brno, Moravská zemská knihovna, Mk 56 a Mk 91 a jejich částečná edice Analysis of Two Latin Translations of Hus' Czech Sunday Postil in Mss. Brno, Moravian Library, Mk 56 and Mk 91 and their Partial Edition Mgr. Jan Odstrčilík Annotation This study examines two unedited Latin versions of Jan Hus's Czech Sunday Postil, which are preserved in mss. Mk 91 and Mk 56 in the Moravian library in Brno, Czech Republic. The primary analysis is of ms. Mk 91, which provides a faithful, or even word-for-word, translation of the Czech original, edited by Jiří Daňhelka, but still contains a number of Czech words. This multilingual characteristic is studied in the context of macaronic sermon literature. Methodological problems and approaches in this field are discussed (authorship, types of bilingualism, performance of bilingual sermons), alongside three Latin-Czech macaronic sermon collections: the Quadragesimale admontskému, Hus's Sermons from the Bethlehem chapel, and the postills of Michal Polák also called the Sermones de sanctis latino-bohemici. Both the language and the contents of Mk 91 are studied in this work. In the part concerning the language, various problems are presented with which a translator had to deal (different system of cases in the...
Czech and German literary representations of the transfer of Germans from Czechoslovakia
Škubalová, Marta ; Petrbok, Václav (advisor) ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (referee)
This paper focuses on literary representations of the transfer of Germans from Czechoslovakia. The central point of the analysis is representation of multilingualism, mainly in the form of its presence, evocation and deformation, and often also in the form of elimination. Various aspects of multilingualism are important means of characterization of the narrative settings and milieu. The use of multilingualism has the potential to illustrate the social and political changes of the Czech society in the last seventy years. However, it is not the only possible way to do so. Different languages are evaluated and considered individually, which offers a possibility to depict the complexity of the transfer of Germans. The most important aspect of the multilingualism is the emphasis on the incomprehensibility of the communication not only at the level of basic speech understanding but also at the higher level, which reflects the failure of interpersonal communication.
Multilingualism in sound film
Hamerlová, Dana ; Mareš, Petr (advisor) ; Bozděchová, Ivana (referee)
This thesis deals with issues of multilingualism, i. e. appearance of two or more different languages, in a film. The first part of the thesis provides an introduction to the theory of communication, then follows a brief look at the character of film communication, i. e. its primary and secondary stucture. The second part concerns with multilingualism on both levels of communication in film discourse. The author discusses filmmaker's intentions related to comprehension or incomprehension of a foreign-language text and establishes the functions of multilingualism. The following parts research three separate film categories whose classification is based on types of languages that appear in film. The first category embraces films in that several different real spoken languages figure, the second one includes films where real spoken language and fictional language appear, films of the third category present spoken language and means of communication used by deaf people. Keywords sound film, communication, multilingualism, natural language, sign language, fictional language

Web Application for Improvement of Vocabulary and Conversation Skills in Multiple Languages
Jakeš, Jan ; Herout, Adam (referee) ; Szőke, Igor (advisor)
The aim of this work is to create a web application that would help its users to improve their vocabulary and conversation skills in foreign language studies. An important point is an orientation on the study of several languages at the same time. The base of the system is PHP programming language and the Nette Framework library. Other technologies used are MySQL, Doctrine 2, jQuery, ExtJS and programming interfaces of Wordnik and Facebook applications. This text describes the complete process of the development from the specification and analysis of application demands over architecture and user interface design up to implementation details, the process of testing and its results. Finally it sums up the ideas for future development.
