Mythology of dr. Who television series
Kužel, Martin ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Baslarová, Iva (referee)
Main focus of my Master's Thesis is to conduct a research of mythological elements and themes that appear within the narrative structure of selected episodes of BBC television series Doctor Who, deriving from the initial hypothesis that such mythological patterns are still recurring and repeating even in the structure of stories produced by modern show-business industries, which renders their content intrinsically more attractive for any audience. We analyse selected episodes from both arks of the Doctor Who's story individually - the old one, which began in the sixties, and the new one, which is considered to be a reboot of the original series and aired in 2005. The originally intended educative element of the series and its sudden disappearance is also a part of our research. Main analysis of our paper consists of a semiotic analysis of the text of the television series utilizing the point of view of the critical reader that was introduced by Umberto Eco, and deriving from the definition of modern myth that appears in works of Roland Barthes, archaic myth, studied for example by Carl Lévi- Strauss, and Jungian archetypes.
The image of television journalist in american television series (from Mary Tyler Moore Show to Newsroom)
Pavelková, Eva ; Kruml, Milan (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
The objective of this master thesis The image of television journalist in American television series is to unveil personality traits of main characters in five selected American series during five decades (from the beginning of the 1970s to present) by means of combination of interpretative reading and semiotic (visual) analysis, and by that interpret representation of journalists. Subsequently the typologies of journalistic characters by Brian McNair and Joe Saltzman are used to categorize 27 central figures to types or stereorypes. Majority of characters combined more different types but it could be stated that all images of journalists were positive - possibly due to bigger popularity among viewers. Simultaneously it is neccesary to point out that characters across analysed series classified to same categories are not fully identical - characters show enough resemblance for type identification but similarities are outweighed by differences.

Petrů, Vít ; Chrz, Vladimír (advisor) ; Smetáčková, Irena (referee)
The object in this thesis is to investigate why a television series House M.D. is so popular. Television series is conceived as a widely shared pop-culture artefact, which is a major proof how the human mind is shaped by and expressed through culture in terms of cultural psychology. The question of mechanisms, offers or content that are causing the popularity of this series is examined from the perspective of several psychological concepts. The popularity of the series was examined by the analysis of the artefact itself and additionally from the perspective of the viewers. This examination led to the conclusion that the popularity of the series House M.D. lies in several different aspects. The first aspect is seen in innovations this series brings to the viewer due to the traditional established form of medical drama. The second aspect is based on identifying, describing patterns and representing certain offers for various components of viewer ("products for the mind"). The third aspect lies in interpretation of the series as "sociodrama" that solves certain imaginary opposites. Szabó, Daniel ; Dominik, Šimon (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)
This work is dedicated to exploring television series Okres na severu written by Jaroslav Dietl and directed by Evžen Sokolovský. The series was filmed in 1980 in the Czechoslovak television and falls into the normalization period (1968-1989) in Czechoslovakia. The aim of this study was to conduct a critical discourse analysis (CDA) of series Okres na severu, with special emphasis on the political power of Communism (Marxist-Leninist ideology) and its use of propaganda through the mass media (television). The text analyzed the discourse of the concept of a propaganda series and tried to answer the question of to what extent and whether the strip Okres na severu is a part of the propaganda. The main concept of this text was a discourse that we can define as a set of codes and rules used in producing the meanings related to any topic. Fairclough concept of critical discourse was chosen for its clear division of the so-called three-dimensional discourse (the text, discursive practice and social practice), which focuses on the interconnection of all three relationships (communication events) and the rules of discourse to explore the relationship to society and social conditions. We address the exploration of the concept of normalization, which is used for the second half (1968-1989) of the existence of the...
