The effect of MCT on endurance performance
Holá, Kateřina ; Vilikus, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Brandejský, Petr (referee)
MCT oils are triglycerides whose fatty acids have an aliphatic tail of 6-12 carbon atoms. Within the gastrointestinal tract, MCT are digested to their respective fatty acids (MCFAs) and rapidly absorbed and transported into the portal vein which then takes them straight to the liver, therefore MCTs are not stored in fat deposits in the body as much as LCTs. In addition, MCTs can pass through the mitochondrial membrane of the liver and muscle not depending on the carnitine transporter, what makes them a very readily available source of energy. Endurance athletes try to maximize their ability to mantain glycogen stores during exercise, so that using these supplements as a quick source of energy should lead to improved endurance performance. The aim of the work is to provide a more objective view of the prevailing trends and different conclusions of particular scientific studies and to clarify the impact of MCT on sport endurance performance. The work includes meta-analysis based on data collection method from previously published scientific studies following the use of MCTs in relation to sport endurance performance. Medical database PubMed and multidisciplinary databases EBSCO and Google Scholar were used to search for these studies. The meta-analysis does not show any specific effect of MCTs...
Substance abuse among the top bodybuilders in the Czech Republic
Hoffmanová, Jana ; Harsa, Pavel (advisor) ; Šejvl, Jaroslav (referee)
In the last few years, the interest in bodybuilding has increased but unluckily it is often accompanied by taking doping substances. At this time, we have been already informed about anabolic steroids exclusively through the media spreading the news about the doping scandals of top athletes. Although many books were written about doping and bodybuilding, their first publishing was dated to 2000 and the literature today mainly focuses on nutrition and training. The goal of my thesis was to map the view of top bodybuilders on doping at the professional and hobby level and their knowledge of the effects of prohibited substances. The qualitative research was made by the series of dialogues that were semi-structured and with the agreement of respondents. The information was recorded on a dictaphone, transcribed and edited. The main research questions were based on the risks that are bodybuilders aware of, their motivation for the sports and possible use of the prohibited substances. They were also asked about their experience of the addiction to them. According to the research, the athletes are well-informed about all the risks. The majority of them are regular users of excessive amount. The motivation for the bodybuilding and taking doping is different, but they have something in common. It is the...

The bachelor thesis deals with the influence of the combination of dietary supplements on the body composition of single-sex twins with comparable sports activity. The theoretical part of the thesis includes nutrition from the general point of view and the importance of individual macronutrients and micronutrients in sport. There are mentioned also selected types of sports nutrition supplements, which are widely used in order to support nutrition to achieve better performance, better recovery after sports performance, muscle tissue growth etc. The theoretical part deals with the nutrition of individual population groups from inactive individuals to the top athletes. The practical part of the thesis focuses on research aiming at the detection of the difference in body fat loss, the increase in body muscle mass and the increase of the basal metabolic rate in single-sex twins for three months. Nowadays, many individuals, especially women, are considering whether to add supplements to achieve better results and performance even though they do not train at the same level as top athletes or high endurance ones. Throughout the research, both subjects had the same diet regimen, a training program, the only difference was in the use of specified supplements in one of the twins (subject 1). To determine body...
The effectiveness of dietary supplements for athletes
Papanikolaou, Stefan ; Vilikus, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Novák, František (referee)
This thesis is dealing with a handful of supplements for athletes. To make the selection as useful as possible, I basically chose the supplements according to their representation in a few sport centers. On these foundations, I made the decision which supplements to research. Then I created system-reviews for each of the supplements using PubMed. The next step was to find out the real efficiency of these supplements. The aim of the conclusion was to say if each of the supplements is useful and for whom. Most of the supplements shown to be beneficial, though some of them in different ways than sometimes expected. An often issue may be that the supplements are useful only for specific use - for specific athletes, or under specific conditions. This thesis is more of a review essay, but in the end, there is a simple tutorial. keywords: active ingredients, sport, sport performance, sport supplements, supplement
The effectiveness of dietary supplements for athletes
Papanikolaou, Stefan ; Vilikus, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Tuka, Vladimír (referee)
This thesis is dealing with supplements specifically the ones for athletes. To make the selection as useful as possible, I basically chose the supplements according to the sales in sport centers. On these foundations, I made the decision which supplements to research. The next step was to find out the real efficiency of these supplements and if the dosage is set properly. To do so I went through existing science papers, meta-analysis when available, and I made a conclusion. The aim of the conclusion was to say if each of the supplements is useful and for whom. Most of the supplements shown to be beneficial, though some of them needed correction in labeling. Concretely the advertised effects and the dosage needed to be refined. But some of the supplements shown as unadvisable at all. An often issue was that the supplements are useful only for specific use - for specific athletes, or under specific conditions. This was not clearly stated by the producers. And so, some of the supplements will not be beneficial in ways athletes may expect. This thesis is more of a review essay, but in the end, there is a simple tutorial. keywords: active ingredients, sport, sport performance, sport supplements, supplements
Quality of education of pregnant women in nutrition during gravidity and suggestion for its improvement
Matoušková, Barbora ; Marádová, Eva (advisor) ; Komorná, Marie (referee)
The Diploma thesis deals with nutrition of women during pregnancy. The work is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part summarizes the dietary recommendations for pregnant women. The practical part is divided into two parts - a research and an educational part. In the research section are evaluated results of the survey, which pointed to some gaps in the knowledge of the respondents. It was also found, that the respondents are not satisfied with nutritional information that they receive from medical staff, and therefore use other information sources. Even for women with higher level of education is difficult to understand to information from different sources. For these reasons, in the educational part of the thesis has been prepared a simple material that would help women to understand dietary changes during pregnancy, including risk factors. The material is intended for women without special dietary measures and in its creation were used informations from the theoretical part. KEYWORDS nutrition, pregnancy, diet, fetus, education
