Border securitisation and surveillance legitimacy

The aim of the bachelor thesis is to explore the impact of securitization and securitization discourse on the process of transformation of the approach towards the borders, their function and towards their importance. Terrorist attacks from September 11. dramatically changed the US-Canada border as well as the whole cross-border dynamics between both states. From undefended border the Canada-Unites States border became heavily fortified and it underwent an increase of border patrols, surveillance techniques and various security measures. This change was possible because of the creation of securitization discourse and the purpose of this thesis is the analyse its creation and development and to examine the progress of the securitization itself. The thesis is based on the theory of securitization which was created by the authors of Copenhagen School, but because of the fact that the original securitization theory became the subject to criticism, the theoretical framework of the thesis is provided by Thierry Balzacq, who put an emphasis on the context and on the complexity of the analysis. Securitisation of Organised Violence Phenomena in Europe: The Cases of Great Britain and Italy

The diploma thesis titled Securitisation of Organized Violence in Europe: The Case of Great Britain and Italy deals with the analysis of security discourses in the United Kingdom during the conflict in Northern Ireland and Italy during the war with the Sicilian Mafia according to the securitization theory of the so-called Copenhagen School and their subsequent comparison. The main aim of this thesis is to capture the form of securitization processes in Italy in connection with the local organized crime. To reach this objective the situation in Italy is confronted with securitization processes in Northern Ireland whose conflict is a frequent subject of international relations and security studies. The theory of securitization as a research tool is presented in its original form formulated by the Copenhagen School and is supplemented by numerous criticisms by later securitization theorists. A significant part of the thesis is focused on a thorough analysis of historical and social context of the investigated phenomenon and on capturing of many securitization statements of political actors to which this work is primarily oriented. Securitsation of the "Jewish Question" in Slovakia in 1945-1948

Dorota T. Moravská ABSTRACT: Diploma thesis "(De)securitization of the 'Jewish question' in Slovakia in the years 1945- 1948" examines how society in the post-war period approached the "Jewish question" from the perspective of the securitization theory. The thesis recognizes domestic and foreign dimension of the process and shows that in the society contradictory tendencies were present at the same time - while in the area of foreign policy people involved exerted pressure on the Slovak political elites to desecuritize the question, in the area of domestic relations the "involved public" took steps in the opposite direction. For this reason, the political elites were forced to face a (de)securitization dilemma. The thesis emphasizes the significance of social and historical context in which the process is anchored and in this light it observes the historical continuity of formation and development of the "Jewish question" in Slovakia, which is set in contrast to a radical change in the social context of the post-war period when the restitution of the Jewish property turned out to be a key factor influencing the course of events. The Relevance of Azerbaijan and Georgia in New Energy Geopolitics

The submitted thesis called "The Relevance of Azerbaijan and Georgia in New Energy Geopolitics" deals with the topic of perception of energy security from the perspective of the European Union with special emphasis put on two southern Caucasian countries - Azerbaijan and Georgia. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the topic by means of the constructivist approach. The theoretical framework is based on the redefined theory of securitization. The methodological basis is represented by the discursive analysis of the official documents issued by the European Union, embedded in the context of European Neighbourhood Policy and the Eastern Partnership initiative respectively whilst taking into consideration the external influence of the Russian Federation in the time period of approximately ten years, i.e. from 2003, when the European Neighbourhood was established, up to the present. The main objective of the submitted thesis is to assess the perception of energy security from the point of view of the European Union and to identify key contextual links and discursive themes that dominated the political discourse of the European Union in particular moments of the respective period.

Italian political discourse and securitization of imigration: the case of revolutions on Maghreb in 2011

The master thesis titled Italian Political Discourse and Securitization of Immigration: the Case of the Maghreb revolutions in 2011 deals with the issue of mass immigration waves reaching Italian shores and, in particular, the tiny island of Lampedusa during the initial phase of the so called Arab Spring. Its main goal lies in reconstruction and interpretation of the political discourse led by Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right government presenting the immigration crisis as a serious threat to national and potentially to European security. The first part introduces the general theoretical framework. The securitization theory of the Copenhagen School was used as an instrument for the thesis, including major criticism raised by the authors belonging to the social constructivist approach. In the second part, the author tries to characterize the basic historical and political context and clarifies the specifics of immigration in contemporary Italy. The last segment contains structuralized discourse analysis of the 2011 events and explores the extraordinary measures adopted and implemented in reaction to the government rhetoric at both the national and supranational levels. Securitization of Immigration in Arizona

This bachelor thesis explored whether the (Hispanic) immigration issue in Arizona in 2010 was securitized - defined as an existential threat with regard to the Arizonan or American society and therefore their identity. The thesis was based on the assumption that conditions for the securitization could work well in a state with high number of illegal border crossings and where Hispanic minority constitute 30 % of the population. Analysis of speeches of political actors and op-ed section in Arizona Daily Star has not proven this hypothesis. The illegal immigration, however, was sometimes understood as a weak existential threat - mainly within the GOP. This issue was more often politicized as the allocation of more resources was demanded for tackling the illegal immigration. Democrats and Arizona Daily Star, on the other hand, took more neutral stance or sometimes even de-securitized the (illegal) immigration. A considerable support for the law SB 1070 from the part of both Arizonans and Americans was explained more as a result of frustration over the inaction of the federal government than as a will to securitize immigration that they in general favor.
