The Terrible Twos: A translation and stylistic analysis of a passage of Ishmael Reed's novel

This bachelor thesis consists of two parts. The first is comprised of a side-by-side translation of five selected chapters from the novel The Terrible Twos from the English to the Czech language. The second, theoretical part is formed by a stylistic analysis of this translation. This part is further divided into multiple sections dealing with the morphological, lexical and the syntactical level of the two languages. The most developed level of these three is the lexical one since it was the most challenging issue that had to be dealt with. Both Czech and English source books formed the basis for the theoretical part. The authors of the prominent publications were for instance Dagmar Knittlová, Jiří Levý, and Peter Newmark.

Word-formation processes in contemporary English fantasy literature: proper names in translation

Excerpt This thesis provides an analysiss opf word-formation processes used in the creation of proper nouns in contemporary works of English fantasy literature. The individual personal and place names are analysed in terms of their formal and semantic structure and compared with their counterparts in available translations of these works. The thesis focuses on the processes that alter the pre-existent lexemes, i.e. derivation, conversion, compounding and truncation and the strategies used in their translation into Czech. Adaptation of Proper Nouns in Czech-American Periodicals at the End of the 19th Century

The bachelor's thesis focuses on the process of the adaptation of proper nouns in chosen periodicals of the end of the 19th century that were published in the USA by Czech immigrants. Based on the analysis of periodicals collected from the Library of the Naprstek Museum of Prague originated a list of proper nouns that has been studied from various points of view, namely the phonetics, morphology including the word-class competition (Cedar Rapidský - Cedar Rapids) and syntax, translated and non-translated forms (Nová Praha - New Prague). In terms of proper nouns toponymical and antoponymical pertinence has been taken into account. Besides the research of the adaptation of proper nouns itself, the thesis also sums up the existing findings on the Czech-American periodicals and the processes of adaptation of proper nouns in Czech-American interference.

Alan Glynn's Limitless - Translation and Stylistic Analysis

This bachelor thesis is focused on the translation and subsequent stylistic analysis of two chapters from the novel Limitless by Alan Glynn. The main aim of the thesis is to demonstrate certain problems one may encounter while translating fiction from the English language to the Czech language. The thesis consists of two main parts. The practical part features the translation of selected chapters of the novel, whereas the theoretical part is divided into four units and explores selected issues accompanying the translation process.

The Use of Determiners in Art History and Criticism

9. Abstract This thesis deals with the use of determiners in proper names concerning visual art. Proper names are expressions that can comprise one or more words, either a common or a proper noun head with common or proper noun dependents. Although they have an internal structure that can be analysed as a structure of a common noun phrase, the structure of proper names is unchangeable since they function as a single grammatical and semantic unit. The reference of proper names is limited to non-generic situational reference. They refer directly to a particular person or object uniquely recoverable in the situation. Generally, the use of articles with proper names is limited to the definite or the null article (which is distinguished from the zero article). Examples demonstrating the use of determiners with proper names concerning art were excerpted from contemporary British art magazines. The excerpts were divided into seven semantic categories, most of which have not been covered, with respect to the use of articles, by any representative English grammar. The examples were analysed and described and conclusions were drawn. Motivation of selected Prague city's toponyms in Czech sign language

Práce "Motivovanost vybraných toponym hlavního města Prahy v českém znakovém jazyce" se věnuje jedné z oblasti onomastiky - vlastním jménům zeměpisným, a to znakům pro stanice metra hlavního města Prahy (hodonymům). Práce zkoumá podstatu a princip fungování motivovanosti v českém znakovém jazyce, důraz klade na vizuálně motivované znaky. Cílem práce je i zkoumat a případně klasifikovat, jaké pojmenovávací postupy využívají znaky označující stanice pražského metra.
