New Generation of Open-Source Tool Stranger Strings

Cieľom tejto bakalárskej práce je opísať vývoj webovej aplikácie s názvom Stranger Strings. Projekt si ponechal svoje meno po internom firemnom nástroji, avšak vo všetkom ostatnom prešiel kompletnými zmenami. Účel Stranger Strings sa pozmenil, kód bol od základu prepísaný a celý projekt bol zmenený na open-source. Rovnako bolo redizajnované aj užívateľské prostredie za účelom rozšírenia cieľovej skupiny užívateľov. Táto práca podrobne popisuje tento proces a tiež vysvetľuje, akú úlohu zohralo užívateľské testovanie pri identifikácii hlavných problémov aplikácie. Výsledkom tejto práce je open-source nástroj na analýzu lokalizácie, ktorý pomáha užívateľom zlepšovať jej kvalitu.

From Word to Image: The Issue of Language in a Play in which Language Is Thematized

The following BA thesis’ primary concern is the process of creating a production of David Harrower’s play Knives in Hens, a play in which language seems to become an active agent, who controls and affects the minds and deeds of the protagonists to a high extent.
After a brief overview of theoretical thought from the school of structuralism regarding the connections between dramatic text and performance, the thesis proceeds to the notion of intertextuality and via that to the person who coined it – Julia Kristeva. In Kristeva’s view a text is formed by two elements: geno-text and feno-text. These terms are further explored and applied on Knives in Hens.
In the more practical section of the text, a dramaturgical analysis of the play occurs, exploring the function of language (with a particular regard to the linguistic paradigm), archetypes and Scottish heritage in the text. That is followed by a brief insight into the problematic of translation of a text as difficult and dense as Knives in Hens, analysis of key symbols and their representation in the production and overall scenographic concept. The last sections are then concerned with the process of rehearsing and finalizing the production, including the selection of music.

Czech translations of French poetry in Moderní revue (1894-1925)

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to find out how the Modern Revue contributed to the introduction of French authors and their influence on the Czech environment. In the first chapters I deal with the French literature at the beginning of the 20th century, describe how the Modern Revue worked and I also state the list of all the French poems that were published in the Revue. In the second part, I focus on the analysis, namely the poets who have been translated in the periodical, and then I briefly inform about the Czech translators, what translations they have specifically contributed and which poets were oriented to. In conclusion I will summarize the contribution of the Modern Revue to the introduction of French poetry in the 19th and early 20th centuries into the Czech environment.

To adapt a classical text in an alternative way

This thesis goes back to the classical French theater text, the theater perceived as alternative in Europe, and my attempt to propose an alternative theater using a classic French text translated into Czech. He describes how all these terms echo in me. He returns to history and recalls that before being paper, the text was body, and that before the alternative there is convention (and tradition). Above all, it is written to untangle the ideas and move them forwrad, to move me forward.

SIGNIFICANCE AND FREQUENCY OF LOAN WORDS FROM ARABIC LANGUAGE IN CONTEMPORARY CZECH

Résumé The bachelor thesis is focused not only on the loan words from Arabic but also their frequency according to the Czech National Corpus, even from etymological point of view, if they are taken directly from Arabic or through other European languages with regards to the development and shape of these loanwords in the European languages. I have tried to prove the trace of the Arabic language already from the beginning, when the Arabs conquered Spain and started to spread their religion, culture and language there. The purpose of this work is also to emphasize the role of the Arabic scientists, who were born there, including their literature creations, which were translated to Latin and other European languages. I have also mentioned the school of translation in Toledo and the ways, how the Arabic words were spread in the contemporary Czech. A list of loan words according to different spheres was used as the core of this thesis. In conclusion of my work I have mentioned the final analysis of these words in the terms of frequency, length of their vowels and the principles of their domestication.

The Czech translations of John Donne: a translator's poetics and its consequences

The PhD thesis studies the translations and the overall reception of John Donneʼs poetry in the Czech literary culture. Its introduction explains the choice of the topic, outlines the structure of the text and the main question to be answered: to what extent Donne has become a significant presence in the Czech cultural context and how his work has been transplanted through translations. The first chapter gives a brief overview of the historical changes in the appreciation of Donneʼs poetry and, drawing on a range of Donnean literature, attempts to define the main features of his poetics. The second chapter traces the gradual building of an awareness of Donneʼs poetry among Czech readers through translations, translation paratexts and references in the works of Czech literary scholars. It introduces the Czech translators of Donne and discusses their motives for translating his work where these could be ascertained. The first part of Chapter 3 describes the method used in analyzing the Czech translations. Prague in a work of Clara Janés

The following bachelor's thesis deals with the work of Spanish author Clara Janés and it focuses on her works about Prague. The first part outlines her biography. The theoretical chapter deals with the definitions from the studies about the space in the literature. The following part discribes her visits to Prague and mentions also the circumstances of her meetings with Vladimír Holan, who represents an important figure in her works about this city. The main part consists of the analysises of her works, particulary the lyrical-memoir prose The Voice of Ophelia, the collection od poems Kampa and several seperate poems from other collections. The interpretetation has a thematological basis and it focuses on the author's relation to the city and to the Bohemia. It concers about the general question of genius loci, the literary topos of the city and the way of lyrical perception of a city by a stranger. The description of the composition and the language of analysed work is also included. The final chapter summarizes all the knowledge, and charaterizes the literary style of the author, while using the conclusions from the analysis.
