Greek Civil War: Greek Immigrants from Anatolia and Their Involvement in the Communist Insurgency (1946-1949)
Chábová, Tereza ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Soukup, Jaromír (referee)
This Master's thesis deals with the individual's motivations for participation in the Communist insurgency during the Greek Civil War of 1946-1949. More specifically, the thesis aims to analyse the motivations of those who joined the Communist guerrillas and at the same time originated from the population which came as Greek Christian refugees in 1920s to Macedonia, Northern Greece. The Master's thesis introduces several theoretical concepts which try to explain individual's motivations for mobilization in insurgency generally, including the "grievance versus greed" theory, the social networks and collective identity approach as well as coercion approach. The theories are then applied to the empirical case of Greek-speaking Pontic refugees from Anatolia and their participation in the Greek Civil War. The thesis introduces the background and experiences of the researched ethnic group throughout the interwar period up until the Greek Civil War. The analysis of the particular incentives which were behind the Greek refugee's participation is supported by the qualitative research in the form of interviews with 21 witnesses, who fall into the researched group of families who originate from the Pontos region in Anatolia and have family experience of mobilization in Communist Insurgency of 1946 to 1949. The thesis...

American foreign policy and Colombian peace process
Svoboda, Ondřej ; Raška, Francis (advisor) ; Kozák, Kryštof (referee)
This study analyzes American foreign policy with respect to Colombia since the beginning of the new millennium. The main pillar of this policy is a strategy called Plan Colombia. While the original reasoning behind Plan Colombia was to enforce better antinarcotic strategy to avoid cocaine distribution to the United States, by the time it morphed into a state-building effort. My main interest in this study is to answer the question whether Plan Colombia was successful and if so then whether it was a prerequisite for launching peace negotiations with the FARC and achieving durable peace. This study has several parts. At first, I shed a light into a situation in Colombia at the beginning of the new millennium and explain the motivation behind Plan Colombia. Next, I summarize the historical perspective and describe the most important events leading to the breakthrough which was the signing of the peace treaty with FARC. In the following section, I look more deeply into data about money transfers and I also analyze important socio-political indicators. In the conclusion, I explain why Plan Colombia was in my view a successful policy. I also discuss upon what was the success dependent.

Czechoslovak policy towards the Greek minority between 1948-1968
Urban, Patrik ; Karasová, Nikola (advisor) ; Tůma, Oldřich (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the Czechoslovak policy towards the Greek minority between the years of 1948 and 1968. During and after the Greek Civil War thousands of Greek refugees, mostly sympathizers with the communist left, found shelter in Czechoslovakia. The Greek political emigration came to Czechoslovakia mainly between 1948 and 1950, when the country was still economically harmed by the Second World War. Czechoslovakia was also harmed demographically by huge transfers of population which had been made shortly before the arrival of Greek emigrants. The principal goal of this thesis is to answer the following questions: Why did Czechoslovakia hold variable approach towards Greek minority between 1948- 1968 and whether there were differences between officially proclaimed policy of Czechoslovakia (in the constitution and laws) and real approach towards the Greek minority.
The importance of economic and political cooperation between Franco’s Spain and nazi Germany for the spanish economy during the second world war
Jiroušková, Kristýna ; Fabianková, Klára (advisor) ; Kovář, Martin (referee)
The content of this work is an analysis of Franco Spain's economic and political cooperation with Nazi Germany during the Second World War in comparison with the Spanish Civil War period. The theoretical part focuses on the description of the Spanish authoritarian regime and on the socio-economic causes and consequences of the civil war. The practical part describes the cooperation between foreign trade during both periods and then compares them. The aim of the thesis is to confirm the hypothesis that during the Second World War the structure and content of foreign trade changed in comparison with the period of civil war. Next, to answer the question of what significance for Spain had on cooperation with Germany immediately after the end of World War II. The comparison of both periods results in a significant change in the structure and content of foreign trade between Spain and Germany. The answer to the question of the meaning of cooperation for Spain immediately after the war is based on post-war developments in Europe. In particular, from the fact that Spain was excluded from the Marshall Plan and was undergoing a deep economic crisis. The contribution of this work is the elaboration of a topic that is not elaborated in detail by Czech historians or economists. However, the subject should be further explored on the basis of indicators other than those already done.
The role of foreign actors in the emergence of the Taliban movement between 1992 - 1996
Misík, Václav ; Horák, Slavomír (advisor) ; Zukerstein, Jaroslav (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the phenomenon of the international actors' involvement in Afghanistan civil war between 1992 and 1996 and its influence on the emergence of the Taliban movement. This topic cannot be excluded from the historical context and analyzed separately. The connection with the Soviet-Afghan war era and the consecutive Najibullah régime was too high to be forgotten. The international actors' involvement did not occur at once in 1992 and did not cease exactly in 1996. It has developed a lot and that is the reason why both, Soviet-Afghan war and Najibullah era, are being analyzed as well while focusing on the international involvement. The main part of this bachelor thesis analyzes ten the most important international players which in some way got involved - Pakistan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, China, United states of America, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia and India. Regarding the methodology, the thesis works with the analysis of the secondary sources seeking to answer the main question "Which international actors influenced the emergence of Taliban between 1992 - 1996, how and why?". Moreover, there is a subsidiary question dealing with the interpretation of Taliban from the different international points of view. Based on that, the states are being...
Greek and Roman reformers
Grigoryan, Hračja ; Skřejpek, Michal (advisor) ; Bělovský, Petr (referee)
The goal of this thesis on roman and greek reformers was to create a methodical summary of the most important constitutional reforms in ancient Rome and Greece. It is mostly focussed on the history of ancient Rome or Roman reformers, respectively. I call these reforms constitutional for their undoubted life-changing impact on the society as a whole - some of the reforms changed the ancient societies for the upcoming decades and even centuries, some changed them, as I believe, forever. For example a struggle between Lucius Cornelius Sulla and Gaius Marius had a far- reaching impact on Rome as too much of "unbreakable" rules were broken - which, of course, led to another and another heavy and unprecedented interventions which ultimately led to the fall of the republic and the beginning of the new, Imperial, era. Main sources of this thesis are the texts of ancient authors, such as Plutarch Suetonius and Appian, as it was one of my goals to use primary literature as much as possible.
Causes and Impact of the Increased Engagement of Russia in the Middle East
Volfová, Anna ; Bečka, Jan (advisor) ; Aslan, Emil (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines the problematics of Russian engagement in the Middle East with regard to the Syrian civil war. The aim of the thesis is to analyse what are the main causes of Russia's increased presence in the region. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russian Federation lost its superpower status, and therefore the ability to control a strategic region such as the Middle East. The current Russian foreign policy under President Vladimir Putin strives to reclaim this potential. The Middle East region has recently gone through violent events of the Arab Spring; thus it offers Russia ideal platform to implement its interests. In addition, the country is motivated by its own strategic and security concerns. Furthermore, the thesis examines what are the possible consequences of Russian involvement. Syrian civil war has spilled over into almost every bordering country and even the Russian military intervention did not achieve to end the conflict. Although the development of the war is shaped by numerous external circumstances, it is apparent that Russian Federation will have the major influence on the peace negotiations.

Polmanová, Magda ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Štefaniková, Sandra (referee)

The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the theory of framing. It also focuses on the role of media in armed conflicts, visual behavior of media, the specifics of war photography and its framing. Furthermore the thesis explores the important relationship between image and text. The research draws on extensive literature on media framing as well as foreign research and combines quantitative and qualitative analysis. The practical part is based on the theory of Johan Galtung and his concepts of war and peace journalism, which can be seen as two competing frames. One of the first visual quantitative analysis to apply Galtung's theory was carried out by Shahira Fahmy and Rico Neumann. This study was used as a basis for the thesis. The aim of the research was to determine what visual frames are used to cover the war in the Czech press. Quantitative research focused on three sets of characteristics - picture position and sources, content and formal elements and framing. The most important part of the analysis was to determine the roles of the individuals in the images. The roles were essential for determining of the frames. The purpose...
