Teaching media studies within tertiary education in Norway and Sweden

This thesis deals with teaching media studies in Norway and Sweden at the tertiary level of education. The aim of this paper is to introduce and compare the contemporary media studies tuition, offered degree courses and their focus and content, on the example of the ten selected higher education institutions. Within the scope of individual institutions, it will also acquaint with establishing this field of study in their academic environment and any research activities. For a better understanding of the topic, it also describes the education systems in both countries.
Development of computer games as a medium and its reflection in specialized and mainstream media

This dissertation aims to be a social history of 8-bit computer gaming culture in Czechoslovakia. It focuses mostly on the 1982-1989 period, i.e. from the beginnings of organized computer hobby scene until the end of the so-called "normalization" era. It draws from archival texts, mainly computer club newsletters, and oral history interviews. The resulting corpus is used both to reconstruct the social context surrounding computer game play at the time, and to identify social practices, norms and values connected with computer game playing. Theoretically, the dissertation draws from the social history of media, audience research in the vein of the British cultural studies, and game studies. The dissertation claims that in the earliest days of Czechoslovak computer hobby, the hobbyists were a prime example of active audience. As there was virtually no hardware and software market behind the Iron Curtain, hobbyists had to improvise ways of importing hardware and distributing software, often forming computer clubs to facilitate this. Context of agenda-setting in the context of Czech media studies

This dissertation thesis follows from a wide stream of considerations of the relationship between the mass media, public and politics; in particular detail, it deals with a specific concept which attempts to grasp, model and empirically examine this relationship. The main goals of the thesis can be in short divided into two interrelated areas. The first aim is to introduce the concept of agenda setting to the Czech academic environment, with its theoretical, terminological and research frame for an analysis of relationships between the mass media content, dynamics of public opinion, and the political sphere. The second aim is to analyze how agenda setting processes are theoretically grounded and studied in the Czech social studies. The theoretical part of the thesis is structured according to two perspectives: diachronic and synchronic. In the diachronic perspective, I try to grasp the social context and historical origins of agenda-setting as a concept, its development, main trends, and developmental lines. This way, I move forward to the synchronic perspective and describe academic grounding of agenda-setting; I give a detailed analysis of the present level of the agenda-setting research and the main research areas through available classifications. Approach to University and Non-university Media Studies in the Great Britain and Germany

This Master thesis called Approach to university and non-university media studies in the Great Britain and Germany: A comparative study compares the approaches of Great Britain and Germany to tertiary education, which is thematically linked to the media. The thesis shows specific concepts in this field of study in two different environments that have developed under different historical circumstances and as a result of different processes of adoption of media studies as a university subject. The boundaries of this subject are not specifically stated, which provides countries with an opportunity to put their own concept into this subject. This thesis examines tertiary education connected to media institutions of higher education, within individual study programs, in leading professional publications, in the national assessment of educational documents and in approach of multinational organizations. The text defines relevant bodies and syllabi, identifying core competences of graduates of these studies, the processes through which they become experts and educational activities connected to media education. The Analysis of "Věda" Supplement of Lidové noviny Daily 1997-2012

This work offers a longitudinal analysis of the "Science" section in Lidove noviny in between years 1997-2012 as well as the theoretical background for science journalism in the Czech republic. In the theoretical part you will find discourse analysis for both of general journalism and science, which is completed with the description of science journalism which bridges the gap between the former two discourses. The analysis of science journalism and its forms in the Czech republic follows. Then the press title Lidove noviny and its "Science" section are presented. The latter part of this work concerns with the longitudinal analysis of this section, which is based on foreign studies as well as on the interview with Josef Matyas, the editor-in-chief of the "Science" section. Results of this analysis are put together with the theoretical expectations and some interesting questions for further examinations follow.
