Local Referendum in the European Area

The diploma thesis Local Referendum in the European Area offers a comprehensive overview of the legal regulation of the institute of local referendum in individual European countries. In four parts devoted to Central, Southern, Western and Northern Europe, it introduces the regulation of this institute in the local legal systems and compares individual solutions not only with the Czech regulation, but across all European states. It deals in detail with individual aspects of the local referendum, including its announcement, binding force and the possibility of a popular initiative.
The Phenomenon of Euroscepticism demonstrated by the example of German AfD and Czech SPD

The Bachelor thesis deals with the phenomenon of Euroscepticism, which is demonstrated by the example of two political parties. The subject of the analysis are the German party Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the Czech party Freedom and Direct Democracy - Tomio Okamura (SPD). The thesis firstly addresses Euroscepticism in general, observing and comparing the level of public Euroscepticism in Germany and the Czech Republic. Subsequently, both political groups are categorized with the help of three presented theoretical concepts. Special emphasis is placed on historical development of AfD and SPD, which serves as a basis for exploring the motivation to establish them. Based on the analysis and comparison of the respective electoral programs to the European and national elections, the thesis compares the program priorities with regard to the attitude towards European integration. The current European Parliament election programs 2019, together with a record of personal interviews with party representatives, allow us to describe their ideal vision of the European cooperation.

The bachelor's thesis deals with the origins and development of the Czech political party SPD - Tomio Okamura. The teoretical part is focused on political parties in general, on their definition, origin, typology and functions. One part of the thesis is focused on the system of political parties. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the origin and development of SPD, from the first political party Tomio Okamura established to the current situation of SPD. Local referendum in the CR - the law, its application in practice and ideas de lege ferenda

The thesis examines local referendums, a form of direct democracy that is used the most in the Czech Republic. Nowadays, it is a standard part of municipal politics. The goal of the paper is to provide a complex analysis of the legislation, based primarily on relevant case- law, and to provide proposals for its amendment. The thesis is composed of an introduction, ten chapters and a conclusion. The order of the paper largely follows the composition of the Act on Local Referendum. Chapter One describes direct democracy and its forms. Chapter Two examines the relevant constitutional and international legislation. Chapter Three describes the scope of topics that may be subjects of local referendums in general and also looks at the most frequent ones. Chapter Four concerns itself with voters and the preparative committee - a body that puts forward the proposal to hold a local referendum - and examines its assembling and operation. Chapters Five and Six explore the committee's proposal and its review procedure conducted by municipal authorities and also by municipal councils that render the final decision to hold a local referendum. The Rise of Direct Democracy in the Czech Republic: Sources, Use and Consequences

In the last few decades there has been an expansion of institutions of direct democracy in most developed countries. The Czech Republic has been no exception and over the past 25 years, there has been a rise of direct democracy in the Czech Republic. The aim of the dissertation is an analysis of the use of direct democracy in the Czech Republic. Although the analyses are based mainly on data from the Czech Republic, the aim is also to contribute to scholarly debates in the field of direct democracy research. I focus on the following questions: Who supports the use of direct democracy and who participates in it in the Czech Republic? How do voters form opinions and what are the characteristics of direct democracy campaigns? What is the effect of direct democracy on other forms of political participation? I view direct democracy as an institutional innovation and evaluate it based on three criterions: inclusiveness, competence and efficiency. First, I focus on who supports the expansion of direct democracy. I also study the patterns of turnout of various social groups in direct democracy (inclusiveness). Direct democracy at the municipal level in the Czech Republic

The objective of the submitted diploma thesis is to analyze the subject of a direct democracy system in the Czech Republic focusing on the local level of governance. The possibility of being able to participate imminently in the municipal government and thus amending the current representative model became the subject of not only political discussions over the last few years. The thesis is composed of a foreword and five chapters, which are hereafter divided to subchapters for better transparency. Findings and author suggestions concerning the possible future forms of the local democracy are summarized in the conclusion. The introductory chapter presents the direct democracy in a theoretical way and shows how it differs from the representative democracy model. It also contains the definition of the five most respected forms of a direct democracy, which are: referendum, plebiscite, citizen initiative, petition and recall. Following two chapters are focused on the situation in Czech Republic, first in general, then with an emphasis on the municipal scene. Direct Democracy in public discussion in Czech Republic. Political actors, their proposals and political practice

The Diploma thesis will deal the main actors who support elements of direct democracy in Czech political system. Concurrently I want critically approach to their thesis and valorize its relevance, viability and potential impact for Czech society. First of all I will present each of elements of direct democracy, which are town meeting, initiative, referendum and recall. I refuse that a direct election of president or other political actor is an element of direct democracy. I classify a direct election of political actor like a synonym of representative democracy in this Diploma thesis. Proposals to amend the electoral and political system in contemporary Czech public debate

The thesis "Proposals to amend the electoral and political system in contemporary Czech public debate" examines proposals presented by different types of entities who are trying to rectify the Czech policy. The current political scene is struggling with problems such as corruption, bribery and government instability. Such a situation leads to dissatisfaction with politicians and it may ultimately lead to their alienation. The starting point is to reform the policy and restore the confidence of citizens and their interest in public affairs. The aim of this paper is to describe what proposals dominate the current debate on the amendment of the Czech electoral system and in many cases can lead to a change of the political system. The thesis is divided into four thematic sections. The first, theoretical part briefly introduces the concept of democracy, individual elements of direct democracy and the typology of political systems. In addition, there are information about the Czech constitutional order and the development of the electoral system in the Czech Republic. Swiss semi-direct democracy: a model for imitation?

Main aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe Swiss semi-direct political system. Thesis proceeds from general topics - what are the differences between direct and representative democracy, what is semi-direct democracy and what the typical instruments of direct democracy are. It also describes the Swiss political system, which is currently the only functioning system that can be described as semi-direct democracy. The work deals with the functioning of the highest authorities, the Swiss party system and federalism and how the individual institutes and institutions influence elements of direct democracy. The core of the paper is focused on the functioning of the semi-direct democracy in Switzerland at federal, cantonal and local level. Thesis describes the evolution of Swiss semi-direct democracy and how it is regulated nowadays. The work also incorporates some statistical data about participation of Swiss citizens, usage of individual instruments and also describes conditions which are necessary for acceptance decisions through direct democracy process. Thesis also contains comparison with other countries, the European Union and the Czech Republic and gives some conclusions on the applicability of Swiss system of semi-direct democracy abroad.
