Borders of Dialect Lexis
Šipková, Milena
After a comprehensive description of the grammar by Jaromír Bělič (1972) and geographic depiction of Czech dialects in the six-volume Czech Linguistic Atlas (1-5, 1992-2005, Supplements 2011), the third and probably the most important task of the traditional Czech dialektology appears to be a nationwide dialects dictionary. The Dictionary of Czech Dialects was started in 2011 by the Department of Dialectology of the Institute of the Czech Language of the Czech Academy of Sciences, in Brno. The first period of work will result in ca 8,000 entries covering letters A-C. The Dictionary is designed as an electronic one (the printed version is being prepared) with the perspektive of further interactive usage (it contains links to other electronic works of the Department: the Dictionary of Anoikonyms in Bohemia (URL: http://mam2.ujc.cas.cz/onomast-pj), the Dictionary of Anoikonyms in Moravia and Silesia (URL: http://spjms.ujc.cas.cz), and the Czech Linguistic Atlas (URL. http://cja.ujc.cas.cz/cja.html). The Dictionary of Czech Dialects compiles lexis roughly from the first half of the 19th till the end of the 20th centuries.\n On the background of current linguistic situation in the Czech Republic (with the dialects better preserved in Moravia and Silesia compared to Bohemia), the author ponders upon the concept of a nationwide dialect dictionary, its specifics and borders (including the limiting factors of a differential dialect dictionary, the influence of codifications to the delimitation of dialect words, the degee of incorporstion of professionalisms/dialect terminology, potentiality etc.). \n We hope that together with a new comprehensive dictionary of Czech (with the provisional title Academic Dictionary of Current Czech) which has been compiled at the Institute of the Czech Language of the Academy of Sciences in Prague since 2012, the Dictionary of Czech Dialects will enable to reveal the dynamism of the lexical system and its external and internal stimuli.
How the Yellowhammer became a Kiwi: stories hatched at the field margins of bioacoustics and invasion ecology
Pipek, Pavel ; Pyšek, Petr (advisor) ; Slabbekoorn, Hans (referee) ; Sol Rueda, Daniel (referee)
The presented thesis exploits the introduction of the yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella) to New Zealand to study the cultural evolution of birdsong dialects in exotic populations after 140 years of complete isolation from the original source populations in Great Britain. The data are interpreted with detailed knowledge of yellowhammer past in New Zealand and of the global (Europe) and regional (Czech Republic) distribution of yellowhammer dialects. Yellowhammer song is simple and males have very limited repertoire. Since the 19th cen- tury it is known that despite its simplicity the song exhibits fascinating geographical variation; the males share the terminal notes to create mosaic-like distribution of dialects. Although this phenomenon has been known for decades and thoroughly studied, many questions remain. One of them is a suspected border between "western" and "eastern" groups of dialects. By combining information about the dialect distributions obtained from works of previous researchers with recordings from online repositories and archives we demonstrate that these groups do not create macrogeographical patterns (Chapter 6). The citizen-science project "Dialects of the Czech Yellowhammers" involved Czech cit- izens in mapping the distribution of yellowhammer dialects in the Czech territory....
A.D. Grigoryev's dialectological heritage in the context of Siberian dialects studies.
Kipchatov, Mikhail ; Lendělová, Věra (advisor) ; Čermák, Václav (referee)
The following Master's thesis is devoted to the topic of Russian Siberian dialects, which are based on Great Russian dialects. The aim of the thesis is to present and evaluate a unique and still unexplored source of dialectological information - the work of the Russian scholar A. D. Grigoryev Русские старожильческие говоры Сибири written. This manuscript, which is still stored at Grigoryev's personal fund at the archives of the Academy of Sciences in the Czech Republic, is an extensive work containing more than 1,600 pages, where dialectal features of more than 550 municipalities in 12 provinces of Siberia are described. Theoretical part (Chapter I) shows the history of research of Siberian dialects as secondary dialects, their main specifics and history of settlement in Siberia. A. D. Grigoryev's life and work are introduced in Chapter II (practical part), along with detailed analysis and description of Russian Siberian dialects from the phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactic point of view, based on the above mentioned work with an indication of toponyms where relevant linguistic phenomena are registered. The Master's thesis is mainly based on Russian materials, which deal with the topic of Siberian dialects. The main method applied in the thesis is a descriptive method.

Pronunciation Features of Czech Language - Dialect Analysis
Michlíková, Vendula ; Peterek, Nino (advisor) ; Korvas, Matěj (referee)
We implemented Výrče:SW, a tool for collecting and analysing audio recordings without the necessity of supervisor's assistance. The tool allows creating a wide range of recording scenarios, including the possibility to analyse the recordings and show the results. Using the created tool, we collected Výrče:Korpus, a read audio corpus of 34 speakers and 2376 utterances of 7 hours in length. The corpus also includes questionnaires that provide information about the dialect reliability of speakers. Sufficient amounts of speakers for dialect analysis are from the Central Bohemian dialect area and Silesian dialect area. On the two selected groups, we trained a simple monophone dialect recogniser based on Hidden Markov Models. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Yellowhammer as a model species for studies on passerine dialects
Diblíková, Lucie ; Petrusková, Tereza (advisor) ; Procházka, Petr (referee)
Even though birdsongs and bird dialects have been subject to considerably intense scientific research, the domain of bird dialects is still worth attention of scientists. There is a large number of hypotheses about the emergence of bird dialects which separately or combined explain their origin. Dialects can be classified on the basis of the structure of a birdsong which they are related to or according to a geographical scale (micro and macrodialects). Research on bird dialects belongs to such type of studies that require great amount of data and thus large amount of time and finance is needed. Nonetheless, this obstacle can be avoided by involving general public into the research, however choosing a suitable model species is necessary. Yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella), which was chosen in this study, is undoubtedly a convenient species for its common occurrence and distinguishable birdsong. Yellowhammer males sing during a large part of the season and their dialects can be easily recognized. Moreover, some scientists differentiate between macrodialects, that should be divided across western and eastern Europe, and could be used to make the research more attractive for general public. Till now yellowhammer dialects have been thoroughly explored in Denmark and in some parts of Germany, but in other...
