The Concept of Virtues in the Work of John Amos Comenius

Theaimofthediploma thesis "TheConceptofVirtues in theWorkofJohn Amos Comenius"is to establish a clearstructureofComenius'sethics and to systematicallydescribe his concept and understandingofeachvirtue. The thesis outlinesthegroundsforComenius'sethicalthinking and givesreasonsforitsnecessity. Theworkdescribesthegoalsthatmoralbehaviourofindividuals and society shouldlead to, and explainsthenecessaryprerequisitesformoralbehaviour, especiallyprudence. Itfocuses on the term "virtue" according to theconceptofComenius. Closeattentionispaid to detailedcharacteristicsofparticularvirtues to befound in chosen prime works. Sixteenvirtues in total are dividedintotwocategories - thecategory "ethics" is a set ofvirtuesthatanindividualmaintains to himselfwhilethecategory "symbiotics" covers a set ofvirtuesmaintained in relationshipswithotherpeople. Human being by Ibn Rushd and Maimonides

This thesis interprets the concept of human being in the work of Maimonides and ibn Rushd, two representatives of major Arab and Jewish medieval philosophy. It combines the ancient Greek philosophical tradition, especially Aristotle, with a religious context. When Maimonides and Ibn Rushd tried to harmonize these two traditions, they had to deal with many opposite views, that stemmed from the difference between religious and ancient world. Behind this intellectual ground have they created the original thesis and approaches to grasping reality, the world and the human being in it. The issue of human being is analyzed in three levels. The first level consists of the relationship between human being and creation, which addresses the question about origin of the world the human soul and the resurrection. The second level, i.e. the man and the world, is devoted to describing a scheme of the world, human knowledge and the theory of prophecy. Ethical and political views are analyzed on the third level, which represents the position of human being in relation to the polis. 7 Summary This study tries to clarify Schopenhauer's and Plato's philosophy for the purpose of discovering their concepts of love. In both metaphysics the thesis tries to find motives which, as author believes, are still alive although it seems that nowadays are so far away.
G. Lipovetsky: The Painless Ethics

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to follow and to critically interpret the proposition about the development of ethics and morality in the work of Gilles Lipovetsky both on specific examples from the history of ethics and its contemporary reflections. The thesis should clarify in what cases is his philosophical and sociological diagnosis, analysis and prediction justified and where it is on the contrary problematic and why. Lipovetsky's proposition in his book The Twilight of Duty is that contemporary moral "boom" is actually a shock and not only a comeback or a revitalization of the traditional morality. It would be no exaggeration to say that contemporary morality is definitely leaving the traditional one behind. The ambition of the thesis is also to give a formulation of the character and typical manifestation of Lipovetsky's "postmoral ethics of the third type" with neither religious nor lay basis in form of duty. The thesis is aware of the tension between the ethical ardor and decadence, the incitements to individualism and the demands of society, in short the tension between responsible and irresponsible ethics. Aristotle's conception of ethics

Diploma thesis deals the Aristotle's conception of ethics. The aim of this thesis is to introduce and to do understandable a overview of ethics. First of all, the thesis concentrates general characteristic time, Aristotele's life and status of ethics in the Aristotle's philosophy. Secondly, the thesis mentions general Aristotle's ethics. It deals with the subjekt, goals, good and hapiness, virtue and moral conduct. Third, the thesis deals intelectuall virtue including knowledge, art, wisdom and understanding. Fourth, the thesis concentrates moral virtuos and courage, moderation, generosity, other generosity, healthy ambition, calmness and truthfulness. Fifthly, the thesis mentions the conception of justice and its division into general and partiak justice. Last, thesis is devoted friendship and its companions. Bachelor's Thesis: Difference in Plato's, Aristotle's and Aurelius Augustinus' Understanding to Virtue Name: Blanka Kavanová Faculty: Faculty of Education, Charles University in Prague Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy Year: 2011 ABSTRACT The bachelor's thesis is concerned with the development and differences in Plato's, Aristotle's and Aurelius Augustinus' concept of virtue. The first part is focused on Plato's concept of four basic virtues, i.e. moderation/reasonableness, justice, courage and wisdom. In connection with these virtues, also his concepts of the good, soul, soul care and the duality of the worlds are outlined. From Plato's viewpoint, the virtue is seen as areté, i.e. excellence or the unity of soul goodness. In the second part of the work, the concept of Plato is compared with ideas of his disciple, friend and critic Aristotle. His concept of virtue is based on human experience in the sensual world. The crucial terms of his ethics are activity, pleasure, eudaimonia (bliss) and the golden mean. Aristotle distinguishes two classes of virtues; consuetudinary moral virtues, e.g. courage, justice, moderation and generosity, and learnable intellectual virtues, i.e. art, knowledge, reasonableness, wisdom and understanding. Learnability of ethics: is it possible to acquire a virtue? Key words: ethics, virtue, learning, learnability, knowledge, practice This diploma thesis is focused on the field of virtue ethics as one of the main branches of the practical philosophy and on the theme of the possibility to learn or acquire a virtue. In the introduction part, it presents the context and the basis of the theme and besides that also the fundamental criteria, by which the outcome of the thesis and the main question will be assessed. Then a general description of the main principles of the virtue ethics is introduced. The next two main chapters are devoted to the description of the approach to this kind of moral philosophy in the works of it's two most significant representatives, Plato and Aristotle. This description is held with the idea to stress those aspects of virtue, that are in connection with the possibility and forms of learning it. The next chapter brings several more examples of the opinion about both introduces conceptions from the viewpoint of the learnability of virtue. The conclusion then summarizes the described features of the virtue, in what way they connect with the idea of learnability and if they meet the criteria set at the beginning of the thesis.
