"I am a Jew who believes in Christ.": ambivalence of Franz Werfel's approach to Judaism and Christianity by an example of his play Paul among the Jews
Šulcová, Veronika ; Zelená, Alena (advisor) ; Kunštát, Miroslav (referee)
In the life of significant representative of the Prague German Literature Franz Werfel, Judaism and Christianity played an important role, which was noticeably reflected in his work. This typical Werfel's feature is closely connected with his hometown Prague where Czechs, Germans and Jews coexisted together at the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century. Their cultures were mutually mixed and influenced by each other, Judaism and Christianity was confronted both with the Czech and the German culture. This bachelor thesis follows the antagonistic attitudes that Franz Werfel maintained towards Judaism, to which he felt bonded thanks to his origin and identity, and to Christianity, which was from his childhood of big importance for him on the emotional level. The paper examines the issue of Werfel's approach to the both religions on one of his plays Paul among the Jews from 1926, describing, according to its author, the tragic moment when Christianity detached from Judaism which resulted in the establishment of the Christian Church in the first century AD. Thus, the aim of this paper is to outline Werfel's own theological concept by analyzing his play Paul among the Jews in order to confirm or to disprove the belief, which spread after the introduction of the play to audience in 1926,...

Religious Conversion - Authentic Testimonies of Converts
Mašková, Eva ; Kučera, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Vogel, Jiří (referee) ; Čornej, Petr (referee)
Religious conversion is an interesting phenomenon that crosses religious beliefs. This phenomenon intersects with many various disciplines, from medicine through the scientific disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, religious studies, psychology and theology. Religious conversion may on the one hand be a demonstration of deep spiritual experience and on the other, the result of strong pressure from others. We can get closer to the truth only through the authentic testimonies of the converts. This is why I have chosen the theme of the religious conversion in the context of "pure experience". We can see differences among conversions to various religions. But it is necessary to say, that I am interested in conversion to Christianity. But the Christianity of two thousand years ago is not the Christianity of today. The Apostle Paul joined a marginal movement at a time when such acceptance was punishable by death. Today, however, converts have joined millions of faithful around the whole world. And this is why religious conversion to Christianity is a lively phenomenon. In my thesis I would like to clarify the question: "What is religious conversion?" Is it a manifestation of the power of God, or is it a clearly human decision? Has the conversion some connection with the social environment, or is...

Apoštol Pavel a filosofie: Studie k politické teologii a její recepci v soudobé filosofii
Hanyš, Milan ; Sokol, Jan (advisor) ; Skovajsa, Marek (referee) ; Barša, Pavel (referee)
The thesis offers an interpretation of Paul's political thought and political theology in the context of current philosophy. The first part presents a methodological basis of the work: the concept of political theology is conceived as a methodological tool that enables us to concentrate on interrelations and mutual effects of religion and politics and to expose implicit or explicit political meanings and implications of religious ideas. The second methodological subchapter deals with Max Weber's approach to "economic ethics of world religions": Weber concentrates on historical crossroads and switches which are a result of random chain of coincidences and factors forming a specific relation to values (Wertbeziehung) which enables us to understand further historical development. Paul's missionary activity and theology is seen as such historical crossroad with far- reaching social consequences. Another part elaborately deals with the most important and influential interpretations of Paul in current non-Christian philosophy: Jacob Taubes, Alain Badiou, Giorgio Agamben. The attention is given not only to presentation of their interpretations but also to utilizations and interpretative gaps, which could be observed in the way these authors read and understand Paul. Though for different reasons, for all of them...

From loving a neighbor to loving a man
