The role of SDS in the events of the 1960s in Germany

The 1960s were marked by a large number of demonstrations in the Western world, mostly attended by students. The increased civic activity of the young generation first appeared in the US when students protested against the war in Vietnam. In the Federal Republic of Germany, the events in Vietnam also belonged to important topics, but at the same time long-term problems of the society escalated too. There have been changes at both political and cultural levels. In the second half of the 1960s, a series of stormy demonstrations took place in Germany over this constellation. This thesis focuses on the "Socialist German Student Union" (SDS), which became the imaginary engine of the student protest movement of the 1960s. At the beginning, the work presents a global context, then the main topics and milestones of the development in Germany in the political, social and cultural spheres. Secondly, the development of the SDS is outlined, with an emphasis on the main themes of the association. Then, the course of the demonstrations in the 1960s, SDS activity and the subsequent development after 1969 is analyzed. Finally the work offers an evaluation of SDS success in advancing its long-term goals in the 1960s.

Developments of the Foreign Policy of FRG in Relation to the Palestinian Question 1967-1974

This diploma thesis titled "Developments of the Foreign Policy of FRG in Relation to the Palestinian Question 1967-1974" aims to bring closer look at the dynamics of development of the foreign policy of the Federal Republic of Germany in the time when the Palestinian question began to resonate with international community. This empirical study, inspired in its' structure by the Two-Level Game concept by Robert D. Putnam, examines the effects that the Bonn Republic had to deal with in the context of today's unresolved and often polarizing issues and identify factors that were decisive for shaping of the policy. The thesis operates with hypothesis that the pro-Palestinian speech of the representative of West Germany at the United Nations in 1974 was the natural outcome of the transformation that foreign policy has undergone in the years leading to it. After the historical part, which describes the relationship between Germany and the South Levant region until 1945, the second and third chapters deal with the external and internal influences that influenced the FRG in the chosen period. "The last Bridge" - The United German Olympic Teams in the East And West German Press 1956-1964

The purpose of the thesis is to explore how the negotiations about the United German Olympic Teams (1956-1964) were represented in the West and East German press, specifically in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FRG) and Neues Deutschland (GDR). The United German Olympic Teams were the last bridge connecting the two Germanys, continuing to exist even after the construction of the Berlin wall. The thesis is based on the assumption that sport played an important role in the construction of post- war German identities. Moreover, it will be argued that the two German states relied heavily on ideological demarcation from the respective "other" for legitimization. Thus, the thesis will argue that the discourses about the constitution of the team reflect on questions of identity, unity, and division. In order achieve this, Fairclough's method of Critical Discourse Analysis will be used to examine ideological and symbolic content in the discourses on the negotiations between the two National Olympic Committees. The Czech-German Military-Security Cooperation vs. the Arising Strategic Culture of the Czech Republic

This bachelor thesis depicts the Czech-German military-security cooperation in context of the security cultures of both countries. It focuses on the specific German strategic culture, however, the process of emerging strategic culture in the case of Czech Republic as a possible limiting factor for the military cooperation with Germany has also been pointed out. The theoretical base of this work are the concepts of political- military culture from Thomas U. Berger and strategic culture from Kerry Longhurst. The key criteria for the compatibility-analysis of both strategic cultures are the historical experience with the use of military force, the attitudes to army and use of force across the political elite, in the public opinion and in strategic papers, and the legitimation process of military missions. According to this, the aim of the work is to find the reason why in the period prior to the accession of Czech Republic to NATO the cooperation in the political and practical spheres didn't take place in the same intensity. At the same time, it tries to find the reason why the participation of the Czech Army in PRT Faizabad has been the only significant moment in the military cooperation with Germany after the NATO-accession in 1999. Within the limits of legality? NPD under constant threat of ban.

This study follows the development of the extreme right political party NPD or more precisely the development of all relevant events that led to the attempt to ban the party in 2001. Which factors contributed to make a decision to make a motion to ban the NPD? How did the trial look like and what consequences the decision of the Constitutional Court will have for the future? Answering these questions is the aim of this study. There were several factors that led to the trial in 2001. Firstly it was the very possibility of banning a political party and the whole concept of the militant democracy as it is anchored in the "German constitution" (Grundgesetz). The second factor was the historical transformation and the resulting radicalization of the NPD. The third and at the same time crucial factor was the relatively hectic political discussion in 2000. The trial in 2003 ultimately failed due to secret confidants. However the possibility of banning the NPD was not excluded. As a result of that, the NPD did not get rid of the threat of the ban.

.The Olympic Games in Munich as a Venue for the Political Rivalry between the FRG and the GDR

The thesis "The Olympic Games in Munich as a Venue for the Political Rivalry between the FRG and the GDR" deals with the use of sport for political purposes by the two German states on the specific example of the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972. These Olympic games were a breakthrough for both countries. For the FRG as a host country, they created an opportunity to show the world, a new and modern Germany. However on the other hand, the GDR could use it's first equal participation with an independent team in the Olympics to it's own advantage. The first part of the thesis is focused on the development of German-German rivalry in the Olympics. The next chapter describes the Olympic games in Munich and also answers the question; what the two German states wanted to achieve, how they wanted to achieve their goals and which one of the German states was more succesful in overall rivalry through the use of the games. Attention is also paid to the influence on political rivalry between the two states of the Palestinian assassination at the games. The conclusions of the thesis are supported by the analysis of the response of the political rivalry of the GDR and the FRG at the Munich Olympics in print media. Diploma thesis "The GDR and FRG olympic team at the Olympic games in Melbourne in 1956" describes the process of making the united german team, which has begun in 1955 and which was . Thesis deals with the mutual negotiations of both olympic teams and also describes the goals, which the sport officials and politics were trying to reach during the whole process of making the united team. The next part of the thesis deals with the real experience with the united german team at the summer olympic games in Melbourne in 1956 and also tries to answer the question, whether in reality this united german team was not more or less just two autonomous teams, which only had a few visible symbolic things such as clothes and flag together.

Sudeten German press, in Bavaria in the period from 1945 to 1955

The bachelor thesis deals with the topic of Sudete German press published in Bavaria from 1945 to 1955, it means directly after the displacement of Sudete German from Czechoslovakia. The first part of the work analyses the period from 1945 to 7th September 1949 with the focus on the first astablishment of German press in the American zone. The main emphasis is laid on the issues of Sudete German clubs in Bavaria and on the origins of Sudete German press which is further analysed. The second part starts with the establishment of the West German Federal Republic (7th September 1949) and its consequences for the Sudete German press. It also presents the new press law and its contribution to the development of freedom of speech. This part also analyses the most important press titles of the period. Apart from the analyses of the printing press titles in the mentioned periods, the thesis deals with their historical contexts including the course of events before 1945. It is very important to understand these events to be able to grasp further development of Czech - German relationship after the war, development of unique Sudete German press and the situation of Sudete German after the dislocation from their historical areas in Czech countries.

The role of Mikhail Gorbachev in the process of Reunification of Germany

The bachelor thesis "The role of Mikhail Gorbachev in the process of reunification of Germany" aims to analyze the position of the last Soviet leader in the negotiations towards eliminating the division of Germany into two German states - Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and German Democratic Republic (GDR). The work analyzes the changes in the Soviet-German relations after the election of Gorbachev as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. This thesis focuses on the foreign policy of the Soviet leader inspired by the concept of the "New Thinking" and its influence on the fate of divided Germany. The greatest attention is paid to the attitudes of the last Soviet statesman in several aspects: the possibility of a German reunification, NATO-membership of the reunited state and the conditions of withdrawal of the Soviet troops from the GDR territory. The last part of the thesis is a reflection of the negotiations on the reunification of Germany in the Czechoslovak press (Lidové noviny).
