Family (von) Hardtmuth
Klímová, Jana ; Županič, Jan (advisor) ; Horčička, Václav (referee)
This diploma thesis Family (von) Hardmuth focuses on the life of a business family from České Budějovice since the end of the 18th century until the end of the World War II. The goal of the thesis is not only a biographical study, but it also takes into consideration the process of the dynasty's social growth, initiated by a Liechtensteiner noble architect Joseph Hardtmuth, and the establishment among the city's and new aristocratic elites. This is why the study also deals with the marriage policy and public activities of the family. Therefore, in every generation we can observe a gradual avoiding the lower status society, the owners trying to symbolize fathers of the workers (parallel to the posititon of the emperor in relation to the nation), the adaptation to the aristocratic way of life, but also the national tension both in České Budějovice and the whole monarchy. The thesis also concentrates on the establishment of pencil factories and national advertising campaigns since the turn of the 19th and 20th century until the end of the World War II. The aim of the study is to contribute to the research of the German city's and new aristocratic elites, whose lives, compared to their Czech companions, have not been examined sufficiently until now.

The author follows the life of Zdeněk Sternberg († 1900) in his role of an owner and a successful caretaker of the dominions of Radnice, Český Šternberk and Jemniště. Furthermore, the problematic of aristocratic marriages is reconstructed through studying the fates of his sons Alois († 1907) and Filip († 1924). This theme was supplemented by identifying those values which were of consequence when an adequate partner for a member of aristocracy was sought. The problematic is demonstrated on the situations of both Alois who spent all his life as a bachelor and his younger brother Filip who married and enjoyed a family life. The private world of three Zdeněk's daughters is also reconstructed. The examples of Zdenka Schnönborn († 1915) and Kunhuta Lobkowicz († 1916) offer an insight into their daily dealings within their new families while the youngest sister Karolína († 1930) spent her years unwed and childless. The particular style of aristocratic life is demonstrated on interests and entertainment which the aristocracy fostered (travelling, hunt, horsemanship, artistic interests, sport, games, reading, theatre etc.). The final part of the work focuses on disputes surrounding the issue of...

At the same time, it seeks to answer the question of whether the measures taken were proportionate to the circumstances of the war. Specifically, it examines changes in constitutional, administrative, criminal and civil law. Other branches of law are also mentioned in passing. The method is a comparison of the pre-war state with important legal norms adopted in case of war or in response to war developments. All this is complemented by a contemporary context with an emphasis on the history of the Czech lands. The thesis uses both primary sources, in the form of norms of Austro-Hungarian law, and secondary literature. In general, it can be stated that the changes adopted were pervasive, in all areas examined. However, the intensity and proportionality varied according to the specific legal sector. At the level of constitutional law, there was a de facto change in the form of the state from a constitutional monarchy to a military-administrative dictatorship, and some civil rights were suspended. The change in criminal and administrative law is...
