Characteristic of ESP written communication
Nutrition and diet therapy in the Renaissance period
Paroha, Josef ; Alušík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Divišová, Bohdana (referee)
The aim of this interdisciplinary theoretical master's thesis is to investigate what the inhabitants of the territory of today's Czech Republic consumed during the Renaissance period (14th-16th century) and what form therapeutic diets had during this era. To achieve this goal, I have used the method of historical data analysis. Valid data was obtained from the period literary sources with medical or dietary themes written from the beginning of the 14th century to the end of the 16th century in the territory of today's Czech Republic and from the modern secondary academic literature, especially from the fields of history, archaeology and physical anthropology. The obtained data was used to reconstruct the form of the dietary habits and therapeutic diets during the Renaissance period and the evaluation of its impact on the state of health of the then population in our state territory. On the basis of the study of the sources and the secondary literature, I found out how people in the territory of the Czech Republic ate during the Renaissance period. There was surprisingly enough food and a quite wide spectrum of available foodstuff in the period in question on this territory. This finding is confirmed by anthropometric measuring, medical reports, and other surviving texts. Complex therapeutic diets...
"The Ambitious Women Illness" Gender Dimensions of Diagnostic Process of Multiple Sclerosis
Nejedlá, Adéla ; Sokolová, Věra (advisor) ; Kobová, Ĺubica (referee)
Diploma thesis analyses gendered dimensions pervading diagnostic process of multiple sclerosis based on semi structured interviews with women targeting their own lived experience and perspective. Theoretical part of this work introduces basic concepts and groundwork arising from previous research including the main and following topics. Starting with medical discourse and continuing with gender bias in medicine, which is amongst others represented by medicalisation of the female body. I also touched upon the topic of delayed diagnosis and introduced basic information about multiple sclerosis. Empirical part describes the goal of this work through qualitative research which was chosen with the vision of analysing specific female experience. Through interviews I had the opportunity to hear a real world stories about lives of women living with multiple sclerosis. Those stories lead me to possibly new findings about the diagnostic process. With this work I would like to bring some improvements to the complex diagnostic process. Key words Gender bias, medicine, diagnostic process, multiple sclerosis, gender stereotypes, semi structured interviews
Brno City Hospital
Lebedev, Ilya ; Hybská, Bohumila (referee) ; Sedláček, Michal (advisor)
The subject of the diploma thesis is the architectural design of the city hospital in Brno. The work is based on a previously developed studio project from the winter semester. The subject of studio project was the design of an urban and transport concept for the selected area. The selected site is located in the wider city center on the right bank of the Svratka river in the westernmost part of the Brno-střed district in the cadastral area of Pisárky. The whole land is owned by the city. It has a markedly sloping terrain with difficult foundation conditions due to the landslide. Although it is close to the river, there is no risk of floods of any kind. The main idea of the design is a connection of the new hospital complex with the existing city structure, Anthropos park and especially the surrounding nature. The chosen shape is inspired and based on the outline of the blue star of life. It is a combination of monoblock and pavilion type, which offers flexibility, facilitates orientation and has the potential for organic growth for future development. The building is conveniently oriented, opening towards the exhibition center and the historic part of the city. From the western and southern part it is surrounded by forest, from the eastern by tree alley and the river Svratka, from the northern part by Anthropos park. The construction of the hospital should make the site more attractive. The accompanying program will include landscaping, a new café by the retention lake, sports activities, a pavilion for medicine and nature, which together with the Anthropos pavilion will complement the educational activities in the area. The aim of the design was to create a quality environment for patients and staff in a unique location on the waterfront and to provide maximum connection with the surrounding nature.

Štětovská, Pavla ; Tollarová, Blanka (advisor) ; Slanina, Petr (referee)
7 ABSTRACT The compulsory vaccination of children has lately become a very actual and frequently discussed topic in the Czech Republic. The public opinion about the compulsory vaccination divide parents on two different groups which are presented by the opinion for or against the vaccination. In my thesis I tried to present the opinion of parents with the different view on the compulsory vaccination. The thesis mainly focuses on the decision-making process by parents. I try to describe how they perceive the compulsory vaccination of their children and what their experience with it is, and how they consequently decide about the realization, changes and rejection of the compulsory vaccination. The main research issue of my work is: What steps parents take when making opinion about the compulsory vaccination and what is happening with parents who decide for or against vaccination. In the theoretical part of my thesis I concentrate on the description of the history of the compulsory vaccination, on the development of system of the vaccination in our country and in the world, on the vaccination schemes and vaccines, the list of vaccinated diseases, the functions of immune system, the model of distribution and payment for the vaccines, the criticism with arguments for and against the vaccination. I summarize the...
Noun phrase complexity in academic written English
Kratochvílová, Pavla ; Malá, Markéta (advisor) ; Dušková, Libuše (referee)
The diploma thesis analyses written academic text. Academic prose is frequently characterized as a highly complex style which is structurally elaborated, contains a large number of subordinate clauses and expresses meaning relations explicitly. However, new research (e.g. Biber & Gray, 2010) shows that complexity of academic writing occurs on the level of noun phrases which often contain extensive premodification and/or postmodification. The thesis studies noun phrase structure in research articles from two disciplines: medicine and sociology. Two articles from each discipline were selected, each yielding 50 complex noun phrases. These 200 examples were analysed with respect to their modification, its form and levels of embedding. The results were compared for both disciplines. The aim of the thesis was to describe complex noun phrase structure and identify its relation to the type of academic discipline. Key words: noun phrase, modification, academic text, sociology, medicine
Media representation of female doctors' status in the Czech Republic
Hejlová, Marie ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Reifová, Irena (referee)
The diploma thesis "Media Representation of Female Doctors' Status in the Czech Republic" focuses on how the media reflects the trend of feminization in medicine. It discusses what aspects affecting the female doctors' status are accentuated by the media and whether the media representation of female doctors' status in mainstream and professional media differs. Indeed, surveys show that female doctors in the Czech Republic face discrimination due to persistent negative stereotypes about the unsuitability of women particularly in surgical fields. They are disadvantaged due to the assumption of pregnancy and career interruption due to motherhood (Stieranková & Veselská, 2020). Using grounded theory (Strauss & Corbinová, 1999), this study qualitatively analyzes articles dealing comprehensively with female doctors' status in the Czech Republic. It takes into consideration articles that have appeared in Czech mainstream and professional media in printed or electronic versions approximately over the last eleven years. The time frame is explained and justified in the thesis. A subsequent analysis of the articles found no significant difference in the media representation of the female doctors' status in mainstream and professional media. The vast majority of the analyzed articles reflected the female...
