Attitude of czech daily press Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta Dnes a Právo to direct election of the president of the Czech republic

My thesis named "Attitude of Czech dailies Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta Dnes and Právo to the first direct Czech presidential election" should confirm or disprove the bias of the three Czech newspapers in the period between the first and the second round of the direct presidential election. The first part of thesis focuses on selected chapters of media, linguistic and semiotic theories regarding bias. It also discusses the process of direct elections and CVs of Karel Schwarzenberg and Miloš Zeman. At first, I used quantitative analysis to determine if the newspapers were balanced and provide comparable space to the both candidates. Then I applied the qualitative analysis to find out what language and semiotic components used the authors from newspapers to inform the public about the candidates of the second round of direct elections. Depending on the findings, I divide the articles into positive, neutral, negative categories for Karel Schwarzenberg and positive, neutral, negative for Miloš Zeman. After the victory of Miloš Zeman the bias was discussed. This thesis should answer the question of whether the three Czech newspapers were biased in favour of Karel Schwarzenberg or Miloš Zeman between the first and the second round of the first direct Czech presidential election.

Comparative analysis of the national newspaper supplements Salon, Kavarna and Orientace

Diploma thesis "Comparison analyses of national newspaper supplements Salon, Kavarna and Orientace" analyses supplements of national, daily released newspapers: Pravo (Salon), Mlada fronta DNES (Kavarna) and Lidove noviny (Orientace). Essential methods used in this work are quantitative analysis, applied to specified moths during years 2006-2008, and chronological analysis of chosen issues during years 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2005. Based on them, various evaluations of supplement main characteristics, specific features and differences were observed. Most important characteristics investigated in the work are: supplement content and graphic conception, placement within the carrying newspaper, structure of published literature forms, themes and sub-themes. There can be also found summary of each supplement history, list of its typical authors and internet version description. Author of this thesis also introduced related overview of Czech literary and cultural magazines (Literarni noviny, Host, Divoke vino, Revolver Revue, Tvar nebo A2) and briefly stated profiles of main national newspapers. To gain supplement readers characteristics, approximate sociological questionnaire was processed among university students.

This thesis deals with photographs in the printed media among the elections to the lower chamber of the Czech Parliament during 2Q 2006 and 2Q 2010. The main focus is picture of the politicians and the political parties. In the theoretical part of the thesis we sum up the main aspects of the media ahead of the elections and the publishing of photographs. We observe news factors, agenda setting, framing, spiral of silence, technical aspects of photography or manipulation possibilities. The practical part brings the analysis of the photographs in the home news pages of the in the four most-read broadsheet daily newspapers and another daily newspaper that is published by a political party. The analysis sample comprises all issues of the dailies in the period of five weeks ahead of the elections in the years 2006 and 2010. The data were analyzed by means of the quantitative content analysis. For this analysis we used up to 20 parameters. The quantified data were then analyzed by the SPSS and PASW statistical software. Multilevel analysis was also applied. Media image of czech fine art in czech media in 1948-53

The thesis aims to describe the media image of the czech fine art during 1948-1953 in the cultural periodicals "Kulturní politika", "Tvorba", "Var" and "Lidové noviny". It focuses on two topics that occurred most frequently in these periodicals;That is the definition of art and socialist realism and shaping artists and society. Social realism is characterized not only by description, but also by inspiration sources like Czech fine art of 19th century and the tendency to oppose competitive or similar artistic styles and trends like formalism, naturalism, academicism and kitsch. Shaping the artists and society is understood in terms of upringing, education and enlightenment. In connection with these two areas this thesis focuses on history, cultural policy of the Communist Party, the organizational structure of artistic production, distribution of art, shaping artists, penetration of art into public and private space, socialist realism and an attitude of visual artists to new conditions of artistic production. Different features were also included to capture the uniqueness of each periodical. The starting point of the thesis is a historical and qualitative analysis.

Foodjournalism in Czech newspapers betweenthe wars

In recent years, there is an apparent renaissance of the Czech cuisine, the "First Republic era" (1918 - 1938, CSR I) especially. Both chefs and journalists writing about cooking and dining are referring to the gastronomy of this time period more and more often and they are praising its quality and taste. However, there is no comprehensive publication about Czech gastronomy in 1918 - 1938 period, sparse references and notes can be found in witnesses commemorative volumes, from history of folklore and from the historical press, respectively. Based on the last especially, the image of "first republic" gastronomy is gradually puzzled out. Using a content analysis method, the four biggest newspapers (Lidové noviny, Národní listy, Český deník and Venkov) and eight women journals (Žena, Ženské listy, Ženské noviny, Ženský list, Rozsévačka, Česká Žena, Ženský svět and a "Československá žena" calendar) being published in examined period are investigated. Mediální obraz zahrádkářských kolonií ve vybraných českých denících Abstract Abstract The aim of this thesis is the media presentation of gardening allotments phenomena in Czech Republic. The work is in a connection with a series of thesis published during previous years on Social and Cultural Ecology department of Faculty of Humanities, Charles Univerisity. These thesis were focused on qualitatative case studies research of garden allotments. Aim of this theis is a revelation of garden allotments image, based on processing of czech daily press articles mentioning allotment gardening. First, theoretical, part of the thesis is organized into four chapters: hermeneutics, allotment gardening, media and sustainable development. Each of the chapters provides a context of the main purpose of the work. Methodological anchor and the research and its results itself follow on at the third part of this thesis.

Tabloidization in Czech Daily Press - Changes between 1995 - 2010

Diploma thesis "Tabloidization of the Czech Daily Press - Changes between 1995 - 2010" deals with continuous process of changes in Czech daily press. The study focuses on national Czech dailies both quality press and tabloid during the period of 1995 to 2010. It tries to explain different aspects that have brought the changes. The goal of this study is to show the tabloidization characteristics with the defined indicators in the quantitative analysis. Based on analysed data it can be concluded that not all dailies chosen show all features of tabloidization. The results of this investigation also indicated that the Czech dailies mostly tend to increase the number of local news and decrease the number of political news.

The biographical study of Jiří Mucha and his journlistic work in pre-war, war and post-war years

This bachelor thesis is devoted to the life and work of writer and journalist Jiří Mucha in selected years from 1937 to 1948 . This period is further divided into three phases, the pre- war (1937-1939), war (1939-1945) and postwar (1947-1948) period. For each era are allocated three most important periodicals which formed the strongest pillar of Mucha's work. These are the Lidové noviny, magazine The Czechoslovak and Svobodné noviny. The thesis is also focused on Mucha's other publications from 1929 to his death in 1991. Each chapter contains information on the socio-historical situation, the status of the media at the time and also discusses specifics of Mucha's contributions to the above mentioned publications. The aim of this thesis is to map Mucha's benefit especially in the field of journalism and also to bring his personality closer. What is more, another aim is to compare the various creative periods by method of comparative analysis or what impact his writing had on the socio-historical events. The thesis would also like to detect the difference between individual articles.

Media presentment of the president Václav Klaus's second term on pages of Lidové noviny nad Hospodářské noviny

The main purpose of my bachelor thesis "Media presentment of the president Vaclav Klaus's second term on pages of Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny" is to find out how was the former president presented in newspapers Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny. The thesis is greatly focused on the Vaclav Klaus itself and I wanted occurrences of his second term to be further connected with historical context. Media analysis itself is not focused only on the Vaclav Klaus but also on the possible impartiality of these two newspapers while they are informing about him. Final output then will be complex media image of the Vaclav Klaus and judgment about the editors of both Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny.
