XML Databases for Dictionary Data Management

The following diploma thesis deals with dictionary data processing, especially those in XML based formats. At first, the reader is acquainted with linguistic and lexicographical terms used in this work. Then particular lexicographical data format types and specific formats are introduced. Their advantages and disadvantages are discussed as well. According to previously set criteria, the LMF format has been chosen for design and implementation of Python application, which focuses especially on intelligent merging of more dictionaries into one. After passing all unit tests, this application has been used for processing LMF dictionaries, located on the faculty server of the research group for natural language processing. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of this application are discussed and ways of further usage and extension are suggested.

Names of trees: design of a multilingual terminological database

This diploma thesis deals with the topic of terminology databases, including the creation of a terminology database that incorporates names of trees in Latin, Italian and Czech language. In the first part lexicography, terminography and terminology, disciplines related to the topic of the thesis, are presented. It includes also the summary of their historical development and introduces some basic notions associated with them, such as term, nomenclature, taxonomy, etc. Basic differences between terminography and lexicography and between terminological dictionaries and databases are briefly presented as well. The practical part describes basic methods and procedures used while creating the terminology database in Microsoft Access 2016. The database is also enclosed with the thesis and contains names of trees in Latin, Czech and Italian and some additional information related to those names.

Hydronymical Map of the Luznice River Basin

The main goal of our thesis is a lexicographic processing of names of watercourses in the Upper Lužnice (Ober Lainsitz) river basin. Due to its location on the borders of Czech and German speaking territories and gaps in Czech methodological approaches our thesis is based on sophisticated theories of German hydronomastics that reflect common etymological roots of European water names as well as of the Slovak ones that strive for modern international processing of hydronyms complying with uniformed, obligatory methodology of the lexicographic project Hydronymia Europaea. Water names that were excerpted mainly from archival and contemporary maps have undertaken semantic classification invented by V. Šmilauer and M. Frydrich regardless of the source language. Along with the verification of suitability of the foreign methodology adopted for Czech hydronyms the thesis makes partial advice on its innovation that could help make the using of the lexicon more user friendly.

French-Czech online dictionaries: current state and comparison of available tools

The bachelor thesis´ entitled French-Czech online dictionaries: current state and comparison of available tools aim is to chart current online dictionaries, their availability and to compare their merits. In first, theoretical part I dedicate to different types of dictionaries, their characteristic and to particular dictionaries, whose creation was an important milestone for history of lexicography and linguistics. The practical part of the bachelor thesis describes current online dictionaries, their micro and macrostructure with regard to users to whom the dictionary is intended.

The handwritten dictionary of lithuanian language from 1st half of 19th century from the Library of the National Museum

Anna Tollarová; The handwritten dictionary of lithuanian language from 1st half of 19th century from the Library of the National Museum Abstract The intention of this work layid on processing, exploration and press-preparation (at least partially) of the handwritten relic, deposited in the Library of the National Museum. This archival document is possible to date to the first half of 19th century and connect it with lithuanistic legacy of František Ladislav Čelakovský. To understand the genesis of this lexicographic project was necessary to compare this dictionary with other work - Wýpisky o gazyku litewském. 1833 (sign.: IX E 4). The defined purpose solved (at least partially) these tasks: 1. To validate or refute authorship of F.L.Čelakovský. Incorporate this handwritten relic to the context of lexicographic and baltoslavic interests of the author. 2. To explore the disposition of Lithuanian dictionary: main intention, role of the dictionary, scope of lexicon, thematic range. To compare notification of the first half of 19th century to knowledge of contemporary lithuanistic. 3. To define the main source used for writing of this lexicographic work. This work continued in modest previous exploration and wants to make a contribution to release this relic to the scientific awareness.

Current use of helvetisms and their lexicographic treatment

The aim of this thesis is to provide an overview of currently used helvetisms in the field of cuisine and eating. In the initial part, a concept of German as a pluricentric language is introduced, followed by a description of the language situation in the German speaking Switzerland and basic characteristics of the Swiss variety. Five sources were analyzed, besides other things also a journal of a Switzerland-based Germanist and business company Migros' product database. Internet was used as a linguistic corpus in order to provide an analysis tool next to the selected dictionaries. Ascertained helvetisms were assessed on the basis of their existing lexicographic form and the degree of their intelligibility for other German speaking countries speakers. Valency Dictionary of Arabic Verbs

(EN) Valency Dictionary of Arabic Verbs PhDr. Viktor Bielický This dissertation serves as a theoretical background for creating a valency dictionary of verbs in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) which is primarily in the form of an electronic database. The Functional Generative Description is used as a theoretical framework for the description of verbal valency in Arabic. Chapter 1 introduces the verbal system of MSA with an emphasis on semantic relations within the system of verbal morpho- semantic patterns (verbal stems). Chapter 2 outlines the current research status of valency in Arabic including various research projects focused on creating electronic databases for Arabic verbs. Chapter 3 presents an overview of a valency theory developed within the Funtional Generative Description and it also provides a brief description of two broad coverage valency dictionaries for the Czech language - VALLEX and PDT-Vallex. Chapter 4, the core of the study, analyses semantics and the surface realization of different types of valency complemens in MSA, i.e. actants, quasi-valency and free (adverbial) complements. The final chapter, Chapter 5, describes the methodology and the structure of the valency dictionary the printed version of which is attached to the thesis. Nominal Collocations in the Italian Civil Code

The thesis deals with different aspects of nominal collocations in Italian legislation, respectively in the Italian Civil Code (codice civile). The introductory part focuses on theory and is divided into two areas. The first area covers the most important legal and linguistic issues of the language of law and its lexical means. The description of individual legal texts according to their functional styles is drawn from an analysis of individual functions of law as a complex social phenomenon. The practical part of the thesis focuses on three groups of issues. First, all excerpts were subject to the grammatical, syntactic and conceptual analyses. The second and third chapters deal with an analysis of the main issues from the perspective of translation and lexicography respectively. Special attention is paid to the existence or absence of an identical concept in both the Italian and Czech legal systems, differences in the content and scope of related concepts and potential equivalents.
