Separatist conflict: comparative study of Sri Lanka and Aceh, Indonesia
Bartošová, Kateřina ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
The aim of the master thesis is to determine factors that contribute to peace settlement of separatist conflicts. It compares two separatist conflicts with different forms of termination. The Indonesian government signed a peace agreement with separatists in province of Aceh and offered them greater autonomy, whereas the government of Sri Lanka decided on military suppression of Tamil separatists. The analysis of the conflicts is based on six factors that are built on the study of Barbara Walter about the concept of reputation building. According to the concept, governments are less likely to go for peace settlement when facing more imperilling separatist groups, seeing that governments have to invest in reputation building. The comparative case study is based on following factors: potential future separatists, value of land currently under dispute, proportion of total population and territory, balance of power between separatists and government, political system with focus on democracy, degree of centralization/ federalism. The evidence seems to be strong that the theory of reputation building does not apply to selected cases because the peace settlement was achieved in Indonesia which has far more potential separatist groups than Sri Lanka. In conclusion, the thesis identifies following factors...

How to support the convergence of socioeconomic indicators in Indonesian provinces?
Ježková, Veronika
The thesis looks for the answer to the question how to support the convergence in of Socioeconomic Indicators in Provinces of Indonesia. Together with literature review, the analytical part concerns the regional disparities and convergence of socioeconomic indicators in given period from 2010 to 2015. The analytical contains the analysis of betaconvergence calculated by regression line and the analysis of sigmaconvergence computed on the base of standard deviation change throughout the years. All this implies in proposal part where the suggestion to continuous convergence are specified: sustainable development, human development, capital mobility, labour force mobility.
Analýza demograficko-ekonomické situace regionu jihovýchodní Asie v kontextu populačních politik
Hrbková, Aneta
The thesis deals with the demographic and economic situation in the region of Southeast Asia with the focus on population policy. There is a relation between population growth and economic development. The region of Southeast Asia is a dynamic demographic where some states have policies that control population growth. There are two types of population policy: antinatalist and pronatalist. Depending on the condition of the population, the state goverment will choose to implement one of these policies. The objective of my thesis is to find out which of these population policies was implemented in selected states in the region of Southeast Asia. In addition I will determine the impact on demographic and economic aspects of the region. I examined only the countries of Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). I constructed composite indicators for my research. Based on the results of the composite indicators, I chose three case studies which are detailed in the thesis.

Emissions of isoprene by oil palm and their impacts on climate and composition of the atmosphere
Palouš, Daniel ; Albrechtová, Jana (advisor) ; Ponert, Jan (referee)
Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) serve many physiological and ecophysiological functions in plants, e.g. abiotic or biotic stress protection or signalling. Emission capacity and spectrum of emitted BVOC vary between plant species. Isoprene, having the highest global annual emission among all BVOC, has considerable influence on atmospheric chemistry and its processes. Isoprene contributes to secondary organic aerosol formation. Under specific conditions reaction of isoprene and NOx may lead to ground-level ozone formation. Isoprene also affects oxidative capacity of the atmosphere. Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is a rapidly expanding crop and it is a strong isoprene emitter. Most of the global cultivation of oil palm is located in a relatively small region in southeast Asia posing a risk to regional air quality. To prevent ground-level ozone formation, keeping ground-level NOx concentrations low in the regions of oil palm cultivation is crucial. Models of global isoprene emission vary greatly and not all of them take oil palm cultivation in account. The present thesis aims to cover current knowledge on physiological functions of isoprene's synthesis and emission with regard to oil palm cultivation and ecological implications of mentioned processes. The thesis includes also brief...
Geopolitical Importance of the South China Sea
Volf, Dominik ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Karásková, Ivana (referee)
This diploma thesis, entitled "The Geopolitical Importance of the South China Sea", deals with the issue of the South China Sea dispute in view of the economic and strategic importance of the region. The main goal is to analyze the claims of individual countries and to find out whether this dispute has the potential to grow into an armed conflict. The dispute arose from overlapping territorial claims that countries in the region began to make after the end of World War II. This is primarily the case of the various maritime features in the vicinity of which there are considerable reserves of natural resources. It is the interest in securing these resources that is the main issue of the dispute. To this day, this situation has not been resolved and on the contrary it has triggered a response from states outside the region, mainly the United States of America and Japan. In order to achieve the goal of this diploma thesis, the theoretical framework, which is geopolitics and critical geopolitics, is first introduced. Furthermore, the general meaning of seas and oceans with the current legislation is introduced. On this basis, country case studies are conducted with the aim of making a comparative analysis that should clarify the current form of the dispute and the potential of the dispute to grow into...
An Analysis of Counter-Terrorism Strategies in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia
Buroňová, Zuzana ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Beneš, Jan (referee)
This thesis is focusing on counterterrorism policies that are used in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. Because of the limited research on the counterterrorism in non-Western world, this thesis decided to contribute to this research and widen literature on this issue. It first introduces the term terrorism and analyses the counterterrorism models (criminal, war and disease models), which can be found mostly in Western literature. It includes critique of these models and attempt to create an alternative one, because it finds the current models unsuitable even for the Western counterterrorism policies. Besides that there is also introduction to other counterterrorism strategies such as terrorist financing and a subsection on deradicalization that is important part of counterterrorism as well. Then the thesis focuses on two parallel case studies of Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. It examines counterterrorism policies of both of them. The thesis first introduces the countries character, threats they are facing and attacks they have experienced and then analyses what measures are used to fight terrorism. After analysing all aspects of their counterterrorism efforts - legislature, cooperation, deradicalization, military methods etc., the alternative model is applied on each case to see if it is suitable for...

Conflict in the East Timor in context of realpolitics, 1974 - 1977
Hlubučková, Lucie ; Bečka, Jan (advisor) ; Calda, Miloš (referee)
This bachelor's thesis is a case study of use of realpolitik by the United States during the conflict in East Timor. The thesis is based mostly on primary sources, such as declassified US documents between 1974 and 1977. Using them we can examine decision-making processes and priorities of the United States at that time. In the theoretical part the thesis analyses different realpolitik approaches with the special emphasis on morality. The thesis argues that some prominent US officials, especially Henry Kissinger, exercised an amoral realpolitik which was overly profit-driven and had negative impacts not only on the outer world but also on the United States themselves.
