Harry Potter: A Social critique
Nováková, Petra ; Nováková, Soňa (advisor) ; Clark, Colin Steele (referee)
Harry Potter: A Social Critique The aim of this thesis is to offer an analysis of J.K. Rowling's fantasy novels, the Harry Potter series, as a work of social criticism. The striking contrast between the two diametrically opposed fictional worlds, the wizarding world in which the governing principle is magic and its muggle (a term denoting non-magical or status) counterpart defined mainly by the lack of magic, enables Rowling to present and explore various social issues: racial bigotry, social stratification, prejudice, corruption, child welfare, moral questions, misuse of power, civil conflicts, national bias, slavery, terrorism and gender issues. The two coexisting cultures constructed in her novels are reflected in language, customs and values. The complexity of Rowling's work allows her to gradually move towards bigger issues, at first revolving mainly around the main character, Harry Potter, and later involving both, the wizarding and muggle world as a whole. In other words, what starts out as a children's story of childhood changes its course towards a critique of greater social injustices as the characters grow up, a clear bildungsroman in which additional themes are developed apart from the basic struggle between good and evil. Attention will also be paid as to how Rowling's novels are influenced by...

Hošek, Karolina ; Malá, Markéta (advisor) ; Vašků, Kateřina (referee)
Keyword analysis is a method used in corpus linguistics, in which keywords are generated automatically from the text against the background of a reference corpus serve as the starting point of the analysis of the text. In this thesis, keywords are retrieved from a literary text and analyzed, with a focus on their function as style markers. The theoretical part of this work centers around the description of corpus stylistics, the role of keywords in corpus stylistics and previous findings in the field by other researchers, including linguistic analyses of literary texts. This chapter is complemented by a methodological part which describes the software used in the research and its individual tools. The keyword analysis method is tested by comparing the seven novels of the Harry Potter series to a reference corpus - a subcorpus of the British National Corpus comprising fiction for children and teenage readers. The first one hundred keywords generated using the concordance software AntConc are further divided into subgroups of grammatical and stylistic words, and lexical words, which are listed together with proper nouns. The analyzed keywords illustrate the ways in which the explored text differs from comparable works of children's literature in both lexis and grammar. The concluding part evaluates...
Harry Potter in Czech : Official and Fan Versions
Ešnerová, Kateřina ; Jettmarová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Švelch, Jaroslav (referee)
The thesis looks at fan translation of fiction, a phenomenon that, unlike fan translation of anime and videogames, has been mostly overlooked by translation studies until recently. More specifically, we examine fan translations of Harry Potter books. The thesis aims to address a wide range of aspects pertaining to fan translation of fiction. In the opening chapters, it gives a brief overview of the history of fan translation in general and of research papers dedicated to the subject. Based on comparison with fan translations of anime and videogames, the thesis defines functions of fan translations of fiction in relation to official translations. The phenomenon of fan translation of fiction is then set in a wider context, one chapter detailing its relation to fan communities and one addressing the question of copyright. The nature of fan translations of fiction is further explored through comparison with official translations, which in this particular case focuses on Czech translations of Harry Potter books. First, we compare the translation process in case of both official and fan translations and then chosen extracts from the last book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. We also focus on differences between the collective fan translation and the fan translation done by an individual. We draw...
