The position of England in the context of the regional organization of Great Britain

The diploma thesis "The position of England in the context of the regional organization of Great Britain"deals with the issue of establishing a regional level of governance in the eight regions of England in the period between 1997 and 2004. This policy was promoted by the New Labour government as an answer to demands for democratisation and responsibility of governance in the regions as well as an answer to demands for improvements in economic performance of the regions. The aim of the thesis is to respond to the question of why the public in the regions does not support plans for strengthening of the regional level of governance and for establishing elected regional assemblies in the regions and why this policy was rejected in the referendum held in 2004 in the region North East. The research was carried out using the theory of new regionalism and the concept of construction of regions. Specific criteria are set and are used as a basis for analysis of the situation in the English regions in the selected time period. The first criterion is the territorial framework of the English regions, the second criterion is the institutional framework and the last criterion is the regional identity. The Science in Intended Curriculum and Framework Documents in Selected Countries

The main aim of this study is to enrich the discourse on developing an intended form of the science curriculum in different country contexts. A multi-case study research design uses methods of content and comparative analysis to find answers to the research questions. The empirical part of the thesis consists of single case studies of England, Finland, Scotland and the United States of America containing contexts of the current curriculum development, description and interpretation of analysed structural and content phenomena in the curriculum of primary (ISCED 1) and secondary education (ISCED 2). Based on the single case studies of curricula, a comparative multi-case study is conducted, which focuses on the identification and interpretation of common and different features in the structure and content of the curricula to be compared. The studied documents can be divided into competency- oriented and subject-oriented curricula, nevertheless, each curriculum contains elements of both approaches. The subject content of the contemporary curricula seems to be more elaborated or at least more detailed than in documents of the previous decade. Transmission of cultural and artistic influence in the fourteenth century with an emphasis on cultural relations between Czech lands and England

This work is dedicated to the question of political and cultural relations of Czech lands and England in the second half of the 14th century. Attention is also paid to international relation in western Europe which led to cultural and artistic exchanges. Using historical events as a background, it analyses extant resources and works of art, by which can be the contact proven. Detailed analysis of the preserved works of art with English origin in the second half of the 14th century during the reign of English King Richard II, is followed by comparison with contemporary art production in Czech lands. The goal is to find features these two groups share and to find a way, through which the cultural ideas were transmitted. In that respect it is especially the marriage of the royal daughter Anne of Bohemia to English king Richard II Plantagenet in the year of 1382.

Nikos Kazantzakis, Karel Čapek and their travel writings on England (England & Letters from England)

Kazantzakis' Ταξιδεύοντας. Αγγλία (England: A Travel Journal) belongs to the most significant pieces of travel writing both in Greece and abroad. Referring to Czech literature it is the travel journal of Karel Capek Anglické listy (Letters from England) that suggests itself for comparison as a literary piece of a similar relevance. The present thesis aims to compare particularly the way both authors - journalists - perceive the country and how they convey their experience, what they have in common and what the main differences are. This was accomplished by exploring the main topics referred to. Mixing genres is typical for both examined books. Capek writes in a form of playful feuilleton, Kazantzakis uses a serious reflection essay blending fact with fiction. Kazantzakis focuses on history of the nation and politics, Capek avoids these topics.

Who was your mother? Who are your uncles and aunts? The concept of family background and selected demographic phenomena in the work of Jane Austen in comparison with the Austen family and historical-demographic research for England at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries

The presented master thesis deals with the work of Jane Austen. The author's novels are analysed from the perspective of the concept of the family, both from a literary and demographic point of view. These research questions constitutes two subject of the examination. The first subject is the family, as it is the cornerstone of Jane Austen's short stories. The objective of this work is to analyse the extent to which family relationships determine the possibilities of the main characters and heroines; how the heroines benefit from family ties or, on the contrary, want to escape from them. The conclusions show that Austen applied this determination in all studied novels. This work further examines the degree of cooperation and rivalry of the individual families in the novels. At this point, a significant diversity of interfamily relationships was found. Secondly, this work maps selected demographic idiosyncrasies in Jane Austen's family, in the families from her short stories, and in historical demographic studies of England at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The birth of The Economist

Bachelor thesis "The birth of The Economist" deals with the birth and evolution of the weekly newspaper The Economist. That is from 1843, when it was founded, to 2007, when John Micklethwait became its editor. The main emphasis is laid on the birth of The Economist. The atmosphere of those times, the social situation in England in the middle of the nineteenth century and the pass and repeal of the Corn Laws is dealt with in order to describe the birth of The Economist more accurately. The situation at the media market is also described. A part of the thesis is dedicated to the economical thinking of Adam Smith, Thomas R. Malthus and David Ricardo. And to the doctrines of laissez-faire and free trade, which were the main motive, or more specifically their pursuit, for the foundation of The Economist. A longer part of the thesis is dedicated to the lives and personalities of the founder of The Economist James Wilson and his son-in-law Walter Bagehot, who was the third editor of The Economist. These two men are the most important figures in the history of The Economist, and have contributed like nobody else to its development. Term of evolution and its understanding by students of secondary schools and high schools

This thesis deals with the conception of evolutionary topic in schools and textbooks. It introduces education systems and curricular documents of England, Scotland and the Czech Republic. Based on this information an analysis of biology textbooks was made, which was focused on the theme of evolution. The research included 62 textbooks distributed by 27 different publishers. Comparative SWOT analysis of these textbooks has shown that the concept of biology in general is presented differently, what is also reflected in the interpretation of the studies of evolution. The questionnaire research based on those findings was done in the Czech Republic. It is focused on secondary school and high school pupil's knowledge and their personal opinions about this topic. 586 pupils took part in this research. It was found that in the context of evolutionary processes the pupils have problems to use commonly known biological, or evolutionary terms (e.g. adaptation, evolution of the organisms). On the other hand some pupils can easily define some more complicated evolutionary topics such as Neo-Darwinism. Pupils have quite various personal opinions on the issue of the evolution. Práce se zabývá sbírkou bajek s názvem Mišle šu'alim židovského autora Berechji ben Natronaje ha-Nakdana (12./13. století, Francie či Anglie). Text je zasazen do kontextu prostřednictvím představení žánru bajky a uvedení jeho zástupců v židovské starověké a středověké literatuře (Bibli, Talmudu, midraších a několika středověkých dílech). Stěžejní část práce obsahuje informace o autorovi a jeho dílech, charakteristiku a rozbor sbírky a přehled dochovaných rukopisů, všech známých vydání a existujících překladů sbírky či jednotlivých bajek. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována pražskému jezuitskému vydání z roku 1661. Součástí práce je i komentovaný překlad tří vybraných bajek. This thesis deals with the fable collection called Mishle Shu'alim, written by the Jewish author Berechiah ben Natronai ha-Nakdan who lived in the 12th/13th century either in France or in England. The aim of this thesis is to introduce the work along with the genre of the fable and its examples in Jewish literature of the Antiquity and the Middle Ages (Bible, Talmud, midrashic literature and a few of medieval scripts). Constitutional development in England in the 17th century Abstract This thesis aims at a thorough analysis of this period and its critical evaluation. It is based on the English constitutional development since the time of William the Conqueror and its summary is an integral part of it. The author considers the 17th century to be one of the most important periods that defined the modern constitutionality and state system of England. The main topic of the thesis is the already mentioned analysis, especially the relationship between the English monarchs and the English Parliament during the 17th century. The author defines the 17th century by a dispute between a monarch and a parliament based on the division of powers, which has changed rapidly over time. The emphasis is on the fact that during this time there has been a significant reduction in the sovereign's ancient rights and the transfer of many powers to parliament. The author describes the change in the powers of the king and parliament, especially in the field of fiscal, executive and justice, church affairs, foreign policy and the right to convene and dissolve parliament. Early Methodists Social Work against the background of social and political-economic history of England

The diploma thesis "Early Methodists Social Work against the background of social and political-economic history of England" deals with the causes of the origin of Methodism, and most importantly it deals with the description of John Wesley's social activites. He tried to confirm the thesis that the social feeling of Methodists at that time also was, besides other things, a reaction to the relationship of the Church of England to the needy and suffering ones. The first part is about the social, political and economic history of England during the 16-18th centuries, which are instrumental in looking into and understanding the social conditions of that time. The second part, and the pivotal one, briefly introduces the causes of Methodism as well as it slighty mentions John Wesley's motivations of his social feeling and actions. The major part of the chapter relates to individual social activities that Wesley considered to be significant ones and that he applied in practise with other Methodists. It is evident that Wesley's social work was strongly driven and determined as well as it was rightly directed towards its aim at the needful ones.
