KAŠTÁNKOVÁ, Veronika
This dissertation aims to introduce propagandistic activity of Nazi Germany and Communist Russia, which fundamentally impacted all areas of people´s lives including human culture, which signifies absolute freedom under normal circumstances. Art production was faced with such immense ideological pressure that the artwork became mere tools of the propagandistic regime. In order to fully comprehend the success of the propaganda, the dissertation focuses mostly on the official art production of both regimes and its insertion into historical and psychological context. The dissertation follows the development of both regimes and their art worlds in order to find their basic characteristics, which in turn serve to show the common principles used by the propaganda that managed to manipulate millions of people all over the world under different ideologies.

Diploma thesis Graphic design of Czech interwar avant-garde magazines and its creators deals with yet not very well covered topic of analysation of visual form of First Czechoslovak Republic cultural magazines that contains some of the avant-garde methods in its graphics. This thesis in its theoretical part relies on foreign influences, mainly on Russian constructivism, Dutch De Stijl artistic movement and German school of Bauhaus that played major part in shaping of the Czech avant-garde. The practical part of the thesis is then dedicated to three avant-garde magazine analyses. Journals ReD, Žijeme and HOST represent three different approaches of how the creators were able to work all avant-garde elements in the graphic form of the periodicals. In the analysis the attention is paid mainly on the front pages, composition, fonts, image components, other graphic elements that make up the whole visual aspect of every page and graphic form of advertising. In the end all three magazines are compared with one another to provide at least elementary overview of avant-garde graphic methods used in Czech magazines in...

From Scribe to Ministerial Counsellor: The Involvement of Jiří Mařánek in the Cinematography of the Forties and Fifties
Kupková, Marika ; Klimeš, Ivan (advisor) ; Skopal, P. (referee) ; Heczková, Libuše (referee)
1 Abstract The thesis focuses on the involvement of Jiří Mařánek in the management of the Film Department of the Ministry of Information during the years 1945 - 1948. His ministe- rial engagement is related to the contemporary strengthening of the importance of literary preparation of the film and to the associated state dramaturgical supervision. Jiří Mařánek belongs to the circle of writers connected on one hand through their affiliation with the interwar avant-garde movements, on the other hand by their postwar involve- ment in the power apparatus that ended by the political and economic changes in the late forties and fifties. His professional fate speaks about the changes of cultural policy of the state, about the institutional development of the cinema and about the relations between literary and cinematic arts. It is a testimonial of what a successful professional career meant for a man of letters and what relationship it had to the cinema. We follow therefore a relatively brief but breakthrough episode of a writer and retired officer in the position of the Ministerial Counsellor, and we try to place its course and causes into a complex network of historical and social contexts and personal motivation. Focusing on this personality unburdened neither by a historical uniqueness, fundamental role of...
The feminine character in El final del juego by Julio Cortázar
Hubáčková, Ema ; Poláková, Dora (advisor) ; Krátká, Tereza (referee)
(in English) I have decided to dedicate my final thesis to a very important Argentinian author, translator and intellectual, Julio Cortázar. This work is based on one of his most important publications, Final del juego, concretely on the position of the women that are included in the stories of this publication. We can notice that Cortázar places a woman almost in every part of this book, but she is always seen in a negative way. This work is not written from the point of view of a feminist ideology. This thesis tries to compare the author's technique of writing with the one generally used in his era. We are going to analyze some concrete short stories from our corpus and we will search for the answer to why in some cases the work of Cortázar differs from other authors of that era and in what does it differ. The goal of this work is not only to analyze his work and present his ideas, but also to search for the possible roots and cause of his style of writing in such negative way about the women. Not only are we going to study his biography, but also the greek mythology and other aspects.

Škopková, Andrea ; Kučera, Štěpán (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)
The theme of the work is assessment of argumentation strategies used by Revue Devetsil (ReD) editors, eg in response to articles published elsewhere or other critical contributions - especially in the context of conflict of art and politics. In particular, the observed situations relate to cases in which ReD editors expressed their views on the evaluations of contemporary avant-garde movement. The content of the study is an analysis of argumentation techniques according to social viewpoint. Rather than formal stylistic means, the text is oriented to contents and context of the use of specific or repeated arguments, especially the position from which the message is being produced. At the same time, the work captures the communication traits and characteristics of the First Republic cultural journalism and the position of the Czech avant-garde at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s. The thesis is divided into four chapters and a conclusion. The first one presents the media landscape of the First Republic cultural journalism, the second chapter informs about Devetsil movement, third part focuses on presentation of the goals of the Revue Devetsil, the fourth chapter presents examples of argumentative concepts on the genre of the manifesto, the polemics and the theoretical study. The conclusion discusses...
Degenerate art in Nazi Germany, its influence and response in our country
KAŠTÁNKOVÁ, Veronika
This dissertation aims to introduce the concept of the so-called Degenerate art which was created in Nazi Germany. The dissertation focuses on the historical context which led to the emergence of hatred towards modern art and the subsequent impact of Nazism on the German art scene. The main focus is dedicated to the "Degenerate Art" exhibition which represents the climax of Nazi's attempt to ridicule and criticise the avant-garde. A section of the thesis concentrates on the "Great German Art Exhibition", which contained the official works of the Third Reich. As it was opened only few metres from the "degenerate" art, it can be seen as evidence of a well elaborated Nazi propaganda. The influence of Nazi cultural politics and the Degenerate art in Czechoslovakia and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, including summary of the response from historical press, creates an essential part of this dissertation.

The work of Antonin Tenzer involves his activities in the period of six decades in the turbulent era of development of Czechoslovak history of architecture. The architect is known as one of the representatives of the avant-garde and High functionalism, author of Faculty Hospital in Prague-Motol and other medical buildings or the Jalta hotel, a building associated with socialist realism. In my dissertation, I tried to map the main typological fields that Antonín Tenzer used in his work. My goal was to widen the portfolio of famous buildings, and on the basis I defined the architect's major themes and current issues, which were responded in his effort. I based primarily on historic materials - published projects, plan documentation and writings of public and private archives, as well as personal heritage, made available to me by the architect's family. In particular thematic areas I focused on Tenzer's vital and successful implementation of competition projects, which he later followed and extended. In addition to impulses from his collaborators, debates and majors works of those days I was looking for elements and methods of Tenzer that influenced the architecture environment. I observed the influence of historical events and the socio-political situation in his work, for example, housing issues in...
