Harald Salfellner Prague, 2017 Summary Towards the end of the First World War, in 1918 and 1919, humanity faced a previously unparalleled flu pandemic; within a few months, more people had been killed than in all the battles of the 1914-18 war put together. The precise number of victims is unknown but is today generally reckoned at between 20 and 50 million. The whole world was affected by the Spanish flu, with the exception of a few remote islands, and Europe, already bled to death by industrialised warfare, was particularly hard hit. In summer 1918, the pandemic reached Bohemia in an early, relatively benign wave. A few weeks later, thousands were struck down in Prague in a second and far more deadly phase of the illness. In October 1918, as the First Czechoslovakian Republic arose from the ashes of the multiethnic Austrian state, and the masses celebrated in the cities, thousands of feverish patients were coughing behind drawn curtains, and facing an uncertain fate. Benešov and the changes of its society 1918-1921

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to analyze if, respectively how much society in Benešov changed after first WWI. I was inspired by microhistory, comparison and probe method to map the period. I try to depict, how the society in Benešov developed. My main intention is to show, that development society in Benešov was after WWI mostly discontinuous, however we can find some examples of continuity. To be specific I research problems of municipal politics, education, Church, army, culture or associational life. They are questions that cannot by simply answered, for example one of them was Konopiště castle case. Described events are put in nationwide context. The main sources for my thesis were regional origin sources. Another information to my topic I got from contemporary press.

The Image of Eastern Jew in 20th Century Czech Jewish Journals (till 1938)

This thesis focuses on the image of an Eastern Jew in Czech-Jewish and Zionist journals from 1910 to 1925 and its position in the identity of these groups. The analysis is based on fictional texts (both translations and originally Czech ones) with Eastern Jewish characters, which (considering their placement in official journals of the Czech-Jewish and Zionist institutions) presented a fictional world acceptable for the movement's ideology and co-created the image of Eastern Jew in their followers' collective memory. A description of the most frequent features of Eastern Jewish characters is supplemented by historical context and the journals' non-literary articles. Bachelor thesis focuses on the everyday life of one family from the early 19th century to the eighties of the 20th century. Its aim is to document and provide closer look at everyday life and family relationships in a peasant, artisan, clerical and merchant family in the region Kladno and assess what has been considered here typical or different. The thesis attempts to trace what has changed and what has persisted in the lives of the most families between the early 19th and mid-20th century. Bachelor thesis will focus on the effects of industrialization and urbanization, the First and the Second World War and the advent of the Communist regime. Czechoslovak Exile Resistance Movement in 1918 from the View of the Realistic Theorie

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to clarify the role played by units of the Czechoslovak Legion in recognition of the Czechoslovak Foreign Resistance Movement by the Entente Powers. For the formulation of hypotheses were used postulates of classical realism by H. Morgenthau that highlight the crucial role of military force in assessing the relevance of international political actors. Therefore, the empirical part of this study firstly describes the evolution of military units that were formed immediately after the outbreak of war on the initiative of Czech and Slovak compatriots abroad. The political leadership of Czechoslovak Independence Movement after a dispute about the goals and means of resistance formed in the year 1916 to the Czechoslovak National Council. However, Entente Powers had until mid- 1918 interest in maintaining the Austro-Hungarian Empire , which they considered as an important element of the balance of power in Central Europe. The turning point in their thinking occurred in connection with the revolt of the Czechoslovak Legions in Russia against the Bolsheviks in May 1918. The Beatification Process of Empire Charles I.

The beatification process of Emperor Charles I. This bachelor theisis treats about the person of the Emperor Charler I. of Austria with focus on his beatification process and places associated with his reverence. The first part is focused on the emperor's biography. In brief is mentioned period Charles adolescence, studies and first experiences in the military. The largest space is devoted to period Charles' reign and the period after leave for exile. There are highlighted peace efforts during the first World War, social reforms in the monarchy and in the period of exile restaurant attempts in Hungary. Second part is focused on the beatification and the cult of the Emperor Charles. Further progress and aspect of beatification, which is the most significant progress of the process and the efforts of The Emperor Karl League of Prayers for Peace Among Nations. After shortly about the discussion that has arisen after the announcement of the beatification. the conclusion is devoted to the description of chapels and reliquaries dedicated to the Emperor Charles. Municipality of Slavhostice on the Border of Contemporary History

My Thesis Municipality Slavhostice on the Border of Contemporary History shows the history and progress of the village Slavhostice lying in region Hradec Králové, district Jičín, in important historical moments. During the World War I, during the inter-war period, the World War II and post-war period. It also focuses on particular topics, school and schoolchildren, cultural life and various municipal associations and economic situation. The aim of my work is to show continuity, and vice versa the contrast between large and small history. Show the impact of global progresses to this small village and to show, a life of its own, despite the events. Events in the village are drawn based on the chronicles, accountancy, correspondence, home lists, photos and many other documents tracing the history of the village. As a supplement serve two narrations of its inhabitants. It should be a merit for Regional history.

The Czechoslovak Soldiers in the Red Army, 1917-1920

The author focuses on Czechs and Slovaks, who joined the ranks of the internationalist troops supporting Bolsheviks during the Russian Civil War. He concentrates on the Czechoslovak communist movement in Russia and its transformation during the Civil War, formation of combat troops of Czechoslovak Bolsheviks, their combat performance with particular reference to fights against the Czechoslovak legions. Part of this work examines propaganda of the Czechoslovak Communists. To process he uses archival materials of "Vojenský ústřední archiv v Praze", contemporary press, memories, anthologies and monographs published mostly before 1989. Village Pátek during 20th century

This bachelor thesis deals the village Pátek during the history. The main part of thesis is 19th and especially 20th century. Are important events that had a major impact on the lives of citizens. The beginning is describes several events from earlier period, which significantly changed the character of village. In the century are then collected separately and described some important points in the village, consisting primarily of buildings (mills, school) or economic sectors (fish farming), which at that time played an important role, whether cultural or business, the lives of the villagers. The focus works are the memorial books and chronicles, to a lesser extent, the recorders of the meeting of the National Committee. To complement and improve some information was also used in the memories of several witnesses.
