The symbolism of flowers in the Hindu ritual
Duda, Petr ; Marková, Dagmar (referee) ; Vacek, Jaroslav (advisor)
Plants and flowers play a relatively important role in the Hindu ritual and the elaborated system of rules concerning the suitability and unsuitability of particular flowers for particular gods offers an interesting subject of study in the field of ritual symbolism. This thesis attempts to describe the use of plants in the Hindu pj ritual and their possible symbolic functions. After summing up the present knowledge about the origin of the worship of deities in India in the last centuries of the period of Brahmanism within the Vedic domestic ritual tradition and stating the general similarities and differences between the temple and the domestic versions of the studied ritual, the thesis focuses on the latter, simpler version. A comparison of several primary materials has shown that the structure of the individual ritual acts during the ceremony is fixed and identical for all deities. The pjs for the individual gods and goddesses primarily differ on the level of the pronounced mantras. However, some specifics can be found with the offerings as well, while the most extensive instructions concerning the suitable and unsuitable offerings are those dealing with flowers. The analysis of more than three dozens of such passages has shown that besides a group of flowers which can be used for the worship of deities...

The concept of woman on the background of social change at the turn of the 19. century (1895-1905)
Košutová, Klára ; Sochorová, Ludmila (referee) ; Štěpánová, Irena (advisor)
The paper is focused on studying the traditional concept of woman in view of its conflict with the gradually enforced demands of women within the feminist movement. The main demands of women on their way to coequality were the right to higher education, free choice of occupation, and unsegregated legal status. As they struggle for their rights, the traditional concept of woman, which places her in a role of domesticity, is used as a strong instrument against their wishes. A woman is only supposed to be a wife, mother and a housewife and she is considered incapable of and unfit to gain any other position in society. The concept of unequal status of a woman particularly governed middle class life, depicting a specific glamour in the role of an ideal woman and family life. Social changes brought up by industrial revolution and upheavals in demographic equilibrium where the percentage of women alarmingly outnumbered that of men confronted society with the task of increasing quantity of women left without possibility of subsistence, either by occupation or marrying a male- provider. Hostility toward the new claims of women was based on men's fear of competition and an unwillingness to share heretofore exclusively men's domains of power; the higher education system, the labor market and the right to vote. It...

Štěpáník, Stanislav ; Bušová, Lucie (advisor) ; Chejnová, Pavla (referee)
Diploma thesis Innovative Methods and Forms of Work in Teaching Czech Language at Lower Secondary Schools divides methods and forms of work into two categories - traditional and innovative. It defines the space these methods get in real teaching, and it gives a theoretical description of the innovative ones. The real state, as seen by pupils and teachers, is verified by a survey which was carried out at lower secondary schools. The work also compares and contrasts methods and forms of work which are used in teaching English as a mother tongue at schools in the UK, but also which are used in teaching English as a foreign language at Czech schools. The practical part contains concrete lesson plans, in which innovative methods and forms of work are used.

China and Africa: the partnership rediscovered and the implications for the European Union
Kopecká, Petra ; Adamcová, Lenka (advisor) ; Knotková, Vladimíra (referee)
China is becoming an increasingly important actor in international political and economic relations. The pace of Chinese economic growth triggers a progressively growing demand for natural resources. After launching the "open-door" policy in the Chinese modern history (which attracted the important sources of capital inflows), the Chinese government introduced a "go-out" strategy for the Chinese companies to integrate them into the global structures. This strategy has its direct impacts on developing countries, where the Chinese presence is apparent the most. China is cooperating with all of the developing regions; however, sixty-year long cooperation with Africa is outstanding in many ways. In this continent China has to encounter other traditional actors -- European Union above all, as Africa constitutes a centrepiece in European development cooperation policy. The aim of this master thesis is to describe the shape and evolution of long-term Sino-African relations into today's "strategic partnership", which is being regarded as "rediscovered" in this thesis, and to conclude with the implications for the EU policy. To achieve this, the thesis is divided into three chapters. First chapter deals with the theoretical basis for the shape of Sino-African relations, in broad terms of Chinese foreign policy towards developing countries. The second chapter looks onto actual, mainly economic and developmental, impacts of the Chinese "go-out" strategy on Africa. The thesis indicates the approach of the European Union to the rediscovered partnership.

Zdichynec, Jan ; Bobková, Lenka (advisor) ; Maur, Eduard (referee) ; Hrabová, Libuše (referee)
Convents of Upper Lusatia in the 16th and 17th century between sacral and secular power Out of the various religious and church structures of Upper Lusatia, the presented thesis focuses on the local women's religious Catholic houses, on the Cistercian convents of Marienthal and Marienstern, and the penitent sisters of Mary-Magdalene's convent in Lauban and on their domains. The period of interest is mostly 16th and 17th century. These abbeys are the only catholic institutions which have survived up to this day in the mainly protestant area. The introductory debate about monasteriologic research and about the possibilities of applying modern historical methods to the field are followed by an overview of the research dedicated to the area - both from the local and general German, or even Czech point of view. Careful analysis of the utilised resources follows. In assessing the factors that allowed the coexistence of institutions firmly tied to the Catholic Church and of the Protestant majority, it was first necessary to investigate the role of convents in the local society and to explore the earlier pre-reformation events. For the existence of monasteries of traditional orders was, in the early modern era, determined just as strongly by politics, (church) administration and by social and economical...

Gerbery, Juraj ; Češka, Jakub (advisor) ; Marcelli, Miroslav (referee)
The topic of the submitted thesis is a symbolic performance of the papal institution. We are laying stress on the form of communication of the papal institution and design of its legitimacy within the medial discourse. In the first and second chapter, we summarize the definition of papal institution as such. First of all, we investigate papal institution from the point of view of its historical development, eventually of its rich structure. Third part is defining the basal papal symbolism by means of discussing the principles of clothing and papal insignia. The key parts are composed by analyzing of both, the Pope election according to the Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis and the analysis of the Doctrine of impeccability of the Pope. The first of the phenomenon, being analyzed using the theory of modern myths by Roland Barthes and which is being derived from traditional conception of investigation of symbols performed by Ferdinand de Saussure. The second semiotics analysis is focused on the doctrine of impeccability of the Pope stressing the Theory of performatives of John Langshaw Austin with remarkable contribution of Pierre Bourdieu and his conception of the social conditions for the effectiveness of ritual discourse. Our hypothesis is, that investigation of instruments of symbolic performance of...

Forming the "cosmoworld" and finding its essence
Horáková, Klára ; Šmídová, Olga (advisor) ; Petrusek, Miloslav (referee)
This dissertation thesis on the issue "How Cosmoworld Forms and What It Is" deals with the formation and content of a magazine for young women named Cosmopolitan. The aim of this work is to ascertain, whether the type of the woman constructed by this magazine is the emancipated one, to uncover how the magazine defines itself or, put more aptly, how it helps to maintain traditional stereotypes attributed to womanhood. In the introduction, the author pursues the basic theoretical concept and methodological tools suitable to apply in analysing media like Cosmopolitan. The very research into the process of production of the magazine and its content is covered in the second part of the thesis. Using the means of discursive analysis, the author attempts to resolve the type of womanhood re/constructed by the magazine and to work out what are the backdrops or frames which the magazine sets womanhood in. Further, we see the author researching the very creation of the magazine (the ethnomethodological observation in the editorial office), identifying the rules followed in writing articles for Cosmopolitan. Having analysed the content of Cosmopolitan and the process of its production, the author has come to the conclusion that Cosmopolitan re/produces a woman who sees her liberation and emancipation in sexual freedom...
