The Audio Course as the Means of Teaching Czech as a Foreign Language

This thesis concerns audio courses as the means of teaching of foreign languages. In the theoretical part, it deals with historical context of language audio courses. By way of describing the development of teaching methods (grammar-translation method, direct method and audio-lingual method in particular), it presents main principles of audio courses. Due to the main target group of language audio courses in general and also the audio course of Czech for foreigners that was created as a project to this thesis, it also deals with A1 language level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In the practical part, it concerns with analysis of three audio courses - the Berlitz's Češkij jazyk: bazovyj kurs, the Pimsleur's Speak and Read Essential Czech and the new project audio course. Written communication and teaching of the czech language for foreigners

In her thesis the author looks at written communication in teaching Czech for foreigners. The theoretical part gives an account of theoretical foundations, such as synchronic and diachronic approaches to the language situation (worldwide, in Europe and especially in the Czech Republic) and language education, including introduction to communicative methods. Furthermore, the author describes individual component parts of the language education (means of expression and communication skills), with a focus on written communication. The analytical part analyses language-teaching methods of written communication in textbooks of Czech for foreigners. The last language-teaching methodological part is more practical, which the author offers specific recommendations for teaching written communication in Czech language for foreigners. Silence is silver, speech is golden. Developing speaking skills in current textbooks of Czech for foreigners

This thesis focuses on the opportunities for developing speaking skills in teaching Czech for foreigners at the B1 level. In its theory section, historical and contemporary approaches in language teaching are introduced with special attention given to speaking skills and communicative language teaching. Subsequently the thesis presents an overview of the present state of research in the field of speaking as a process and a complex skill and a classification of speaking activities. The requirements placed on the oral communication of the students at B1 level by the Common European Framework are also laid out. In the analysis, selected textbooks of Czech for foreigners are examined to determine what opportunities the textbooks offer for the development of speaking skills. At the conclusion of the analysis the respective textbooks are compared and improvements to existing speaking activities are proposed to meet the findings of the modern language teaching methodology.

Sociocultural competence in teaching Czech for foreigners

The present thesis tries to approach the issue of foreign language acquisition and foreign language didactics approaches. The main theme of the work is socio-cultural competence in teaching Czech for foreigners. It also states the issue in a broader context. Following is a detailed analysis of that term and its definition in a social frame of reference levels for Czech A1. The main part comprises of individually assessed five selected textbooks of Czech for foreigners. The analysis is carried out based on own criteria which have been determined in accordance with the required components of the socio-cultural competencies according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and J. Průcha methodologies. In the final part of the thesis is made mutual comparison of books with regard to the extent of helping to deepen and develop the student's knowledge in terms of socio-cultural competence. The Involvement of Civic Sector Organizations in the Area of Foreigner's Education: The Comparison of Situation in the Czech Republic and in the Netherlands.

In this thesis the activities of civic sector organisations (CSOs) in the field of foreign children's education in the Czech Republic and in the Netherlands are described. The aim is to analyze conditions which are in the field of foreign children's education in both countries, and methods and instruments which are used by CSOs. In the Netherlands there is a lot of experience with immigrants from all over the world so know how of Dutch CSOs can serve as an inspiration for Czech CSOs since in the CR there is lack of experience with immigrants. In both countries a qualitative research was done. The research was made on the basis of knowledge acquired in specialised literature. It includes semistructured interviews with CSOs members, and in the case of the Netherlands interviews with employees of two Dutch schools and with an expert on foreign children's education. Visualization in teaching Czech for foreigners

Abscract The topic of the master thesis is focused on the visualization of the Czech language curriculum as a foreign language. It summarizes the findings of the importance of images in the teaching process and the principles of its use. Individual chapters are devoted to didactic functions of the image, the relationship between image and text and the use of image specifics in foreign language teaching. Furthermore, presents graphical and pictorial means by which are teaching materials visualized. The work also focuses on visual media and their use in the classroom. Theoretical knowledge is applied in the practical part, which deals with research of the visual part of Czech textbooks for foreigners. Research part examines the didactic functions of the image, use of visual aids and presentation of vocabulary, grammar and cultural studies. The thesis also partially covers the issue of signaling grammar and didactic use of film clips. The thesis main focus is on practical advices and examples of how to integrate visualization elements into foreign language teaching and is intended for experts and for foreign language teachers.

Types of Language Exercices and their Distribution in Selected Textbooks of Czech for Foreigners

This dissertation focuses on exercises contained in textbooks of Czech for foreigners and compares the frequency of each type of exercise in selected textbooks. The first part of this dissertation examines related theoretical approaches, including general pedagogical concepts of textbooks and exercises as well as some possible ways of exercise classification. Where appropriate, the more specific approaches of teaching languages are included. The second part of this dissertation deals with the main topic of this dissertation which is frequency analysis of certain exercise types conducted on seven textbooks of Czech for foreigners. The main analysis criterion was suitability of each type of exercise for practising specific language areas and communicative skills. This part further provides detailed analysis method description (including the method of selection of specific textbooks for analysis) and the analysis results. By way of conclusion this dissertation compares all textbooks and seeks to provide some recommendations for teachers who work with these textbooks.

The integration of foreign language pupils into Czech lessons

The bachelor's thesis analyzes the current situation and possibilities of Czech Primary school systém with the integration of foreign pupils with permanent resistance in the Czech republic into Czech language teaching. It deals with not only the options that are guaranteed by law, but also a possible collaboration between schools and other institutions or family. It provides the basic teaching aids that are available for education of these students. Based on the study of literature and consultation with teachers from two Prague Primary schools presents two case studies that describe a way of integrating foreign pupils in these schools, and measures which are succesful or not when working with them.

Feedback in Czech Language Courses for Foreigners

This thesis explores teacher's feedback, its definition, types, and is specifically focused on feedback moves in context of teaching Czech as a foreign language. The aim of this thesis is to present current research on the feedback in the context of teaching a second/foreign language and describe how the feedback is used in Czech language courses for foreigners and what instruments teachers use for such purpose. The first part is focusing on the feedback as part of the educational dialogue and communication in the language classroom; introducing some concepts and hypotheses of second language acquisition in which feedback figures. We also provide a description of feedback, both positive and corrective, and we present current studies concerning feedback within language learning. The empirical part carries out conversational analysis of transcribed recordings of participant observation in Czech courses for foreigners, in which we focus on feedback moves of lecturers. The thesis includes glossary explaining relevant terms translated into Czech.
