My new room-mate: The Epilepsy+
Mívaltová, Markéta ; Veit, Jakub (referee) ; Mléčka, Jan (advisor)
Each of us has been dealt different cards in life. Some better, some worse. Some rich, some poor. Some healthier, some less so. Some happier, some less so. Each of us faces different challenges and opportunities. But that's life; no person in the world gets the same cards. However, in the end, it doesn't matter whether you drew an ace or not. It doesn't matter what cards you were dealt, but how you handle them. It matters whether you exchange them for others and better ones, or whether you keep them until the end of your life. Life is like a game, and nobody knows how it will turn out. Some are better players, others worse. But what if you draw a card with epilepsy? Could you still play a quality game with this card? How much will it affect your life? Undoubtedly, it will impact life much more than anyone who hasn't experienced something similar can imagine. Epilepsy is a chronic condition that means living with constant uncertainty. Uncertainty about when and where a seizure will strike. Uncertainty about how others will react to you. Uncertainty about how to cope with physical and psychological consequences. People with epilepsy often feel lonely, misunderstood, or rejected. However, housing is just as crucial for them as it is for anyone else. Because it's a space where they seek refuge and safety. A space where they should have the opportunity to live fully and with dignity. Unfortunately, many of them don't have the option to choose suitable housing that would meet their specific needs and financial means. So, how to design housing for people with epilepsy that would enable them to live contentedly and happily? This work attempts to find an answer to this question. The goal is to explore the relationship between epilepsy and spatial organization and to propose various typologies of housing that would respect the individual needs and preferences of this group of people. The work also utilizes modern technologies that can help improve the daily functioning of people with epilepsy, while also providing them with greater independence and control over their lives. The aim of the work is to show that people with epilepsy also have the right to quality housing that would help them realize their dreams and goals. To help them play their life game a little easier with an additional card. The theoretical part of the project, besides the disease itself, also addressed possible connections with the positive or negative effects of the surrounding environment on epileptics. Considerations were given to factors such as the impact of color, materials, sound, smell, temperature, as well as the safety of the space, which is undoubtedly a primary requirement in design. Following the theoretical research part of this project, I decided to propose suitable housing for epileptics in the practical part, adapted to their specific needs, both spatially and, for example, in the associated functions of the building, while still meeting the requirements of full-fledged urban living. The primary function in the design will be housing, to which additional functions will logically be added, such as accessible healthcare or leisure activities for residents.
Revitalization Program of Floral Garden in Kromeriz
Koželouhová, Anna ; Vojtová, Lea (referee) ; Hrabec, Josef (advisor)
The topic of the bachelor thesis is the design of the revitalization of the foreground of the Květná garden in Kroměříž and of the service building for visitors. When solving the project, the first ideas were initiated by its strong social context. The garden art has always been a reflection of its own period. The founders of gardens – the aristocracy, monarchs or clergy – have used gardens as a means to represent their social status. They have tried to point out the things that have been conceived as artistically and technically (and later socially) progressive and correct. The main ideal concept of my project results from these facts and considerations. I seek to represent today’s era and society – within the meaning of the good, what they could and according to my opinion should bring to each other. And what they perhaps do… That is why I apply knowledge of today’s technique and ecology in my project – in terms of the use of local natural materials and renewable energy resources. At the same time I try to take advantage of and to give support to the frankness of today’s society and to create a project with a social and human overlap. I incorporate a function of a temporary sheltered housing into the area and support integration of people into the society through garden works and therapies. Last but not least – I would like to open the gardens to the broadest scope of the laic public and to create not only an esthetic function, but an educational as well. From the architectural point of view, I tried to bring contemporary components into the garden, which, however, respect the historical evolution and the temporary situation and connect to them. In the Holandská garden I placed the visitors centre into the ground plan – a path of the former “casino”. It closes up this lengthwise space, it creates a notion of continuance of the colonnade of the Květná garden (and transcription of the arcade on its façade), and it balances the dimension of the tropical glasshouse on the other side of the garden. Regarding the solution of the garden space, I respect the cross axes of the Květná garden as well as the main longitudinal axe of the foreground. I create a simple composition of larger sheets with two new “piazzas” – at the place of the renewed Neptune’s fountain and in front of the visitor’s center. By creating the elevated sheets I add the third dimension to the parcel. In the southern part of the foreground I compose functionally different spaces along the longitudinal axe. Hence, visitor’s attention is non-violently drawn to the aviary. Crosswise, the garden is divided into several parts – the representational one (by the cold glasshouse), the agricultural and educational one (but no less attractive) with the garden centre, and the leisure area of the aviary and the so called “rabbit hill”.

Sheltered housing at Kociánka in Brno
Schwab, Viktor ; Šerek, Jiří (referee) ; Františák, Luboš (advisor)
The original intention was a development on the edge in the peripheral agricultural area of the Kociánka Center complex and at the city’s inappropriate car park near to the industrial complex of the former Královopolská engineering company. By developing and adding new functions, this periphery and the border of the complex Kociánka Center can be transformed into a new space communicating with the outside world. The proposal focuses on creating homes for shared living for adult people with various types of disabilities and creating new job opportunities on the southern peripheral edge of the Kociánka Center complex. Transformation of periphery can be reached by modifying the southern edge, revitalizing the existing car park with a hydroponic greenhouse system, pavilion, and a photovoltaic rooftop power plant. Behind this barrier building there is a calm place for sheltered housing.

Needs Analysis of a Selected Institution for Clients with Mental or Combined Disabilities
MACEŠKOVÁ, Eliška
This diploma thesis deals with the analysis of the needs of a selected facility for clients with mental or combined disabilities. The aim of the thesis is to find out the needs of the employees of the selected facility and the needs of its clients - specifically, clients living in sheltered housing. The research within the diploma thesis was prepared and realized on the basis of an order from the top management of the facility. The diploma thesis consists of two parts - theoretical and practical. Within the framework of the theoretical part, terms related to the topic of the diploma thesis are defined - persons with mental or combined disabilities, their needs, the needs of employees, etc. - and important theoretical starting points are given within its framework. The practical part of the diploma thesis deals with the research itself - from the setting of goals and research questions, through the methodology, interpretation of the results, their comparison with theoretical starting points to the conclusion. A qualitative research strategy was chosen for the research in the practical part of this thesis, together with the interview method and the semi-structured interview technique. The research resulted in a comparison of the needs of the employees of the three sections, the needs of clients living in sheltered housing and a comparison of the needs of the employees with the needs of the clients, within the given facility. Based on the research, it became clear, for example, that there are similarities, but also differences in the needs of employees across individual departments. The results of the research will serve as direct feedback to the top management of the given facility regarding the needs and satisfaction of employees and clients of sheltered housing within it.
