Verification of the Predictive Relationship of Risk Factors on the Child Endangerment
Lipová, Dana ; Jeřábek, Hynek (advisor) ; Soukup, Petr (referee)
The thesis examines the relationship between factors that are considered risky in the area of social and legal protection of children, and the child endangerment, which is a legal reason for a state intervention in the family. The child endangerment was conceptualized based on the child trauma theory. Risk factors were identified by means of a comparative analysis of Czech and foreign instruments of social and legal child protection bodies. The MIMIC model was used to investigate the relationships between risk factors and the child endangerment, which enables comprehensive testing of relationships between several independent variables and one dependent latent variable, which is measured by a set of manifest variables, the model also works with mutual relationships between independent variables. The testing of the model proved that risk factors have a very different degree of influence on the child endangerment, and that it is important to take into account not only their direct influence, but also those mediated through other factors. The model proved that several factors have no influence on the child endangerment. It also follows from the model that it is sufficient to work only with a limited set of key factors when evaluating the child's situation.
Intergenerational solidarity in the time of coronavirus pandemia
Vondrová, Vanesa ; Jeřábek, Hynek (advisor) ; Remr, Jiří (referee)
The diploma thesis examines the changes in intergenerational solidarity and the form of care provided by informal caregivers to elderly individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic. The rapidly changing situation around COVID-19 was captured through a planned but ultimately unrealized longitudinal panel design, which would have allowed capturing its dynamic nature. The method of data collection for the research was a questionnaire survey. In-depth interviews were conducted with a selected sample of participants, including caregivers and elderly recipients of care. These interviews took the form of semi-structured interviews, allowing flexibility in exploring relevant aspects. The collected qualitative data were analysed using content analysis. Despite the unrealized plan, the thesis provides a comprehensive view of the changing intergenerational solidarity during the pandemic. Findings revealed that the pandemic influenced intergenerational solidarity among caregivers and elderly recipients. Shared perceptions and concerns led to higher levels of solidarity. Isolation did not necessarily weaken solidarity, as many families used digital technologies to maintain connections and support. Additionally, intensive care contributed to higher intergenerational solidarity and engagement. Respondents...
Representation of women in municipal councils: How does the allocation of municipal budgets differ based on the representation of women?
Štrobachová, Tereza ; Císař, Ondřej (advisor) ; Jeřábek, Hynek (referee)
This paper examines the impact of women's representation in municipal councils in the Czech Republic on municipal budget allocation. The primary objective was to determine whether the level of representation of women in municipal councils across the Czech Republic affects the allocation of municipal budgets across different areas. In particular, the thesis focuses on the relationship between the gender composition of municipal councils and the allocation of budget resources, with the main aim of investigating how the presence of women in municipal councils affects the distribution of funds, with a deeper focus on whether higher representation of women in municipal councils generates changes in the structure of budget allocation, including across different categories of expenditure in favour of traditional women's issues. Using multiple linear regression models and studying the 2018 and 2021 budgets of municipalities in the Czech Republic, it was found that most of the predicted associations between women's representation and budget allocation were not confirmed, and the results were not statistically significant. However, a statistically significant association was found between higher representation of women in councils and an increase in spending on traditionally women's issues. When interpreting...
Media Framing: Transformation of Nursultan Nazarbayev's Image in the US Media
Tokayeva, Assem ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Jeřábek, Hynek (referee)
The thesis deals with U.S. media coverage of Kazakhstan's first president Nursultan Nazarbayev between 2011 and 2022. Using Bourdieu's theory of journalistic field and Entman's concept of media framing, the content analysis of five different media outlets shows that while commercial newspapers (NYT, WP, WSJ) were more critical than non- profit online media outlets (Eurasianet, RFE/RL) regarding Nazarbayev and his regime during events that challenged his power; their overall coverage of the country, its leader and his legacy has been restrained or even credited Nazarbayev for various achievements. Differences in the degree of critical stance were also identified between the two non- profit media. Providing an overview of Kazakh government-funded lobbying information campaigns abroad, the thesis confirms the importance of research into the use of international media platforms by authoritarian regimes aiming at creating a favorable image abroad. Keywords: Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan, media framing, lobbyism, U.S. media, RFE/RL, Eurasianet, NYT, WSJ, WP Range of thesis: 52 pages, i.e. 119,088 characters
Media Representation of Elderly in the Czech Press: Changes in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic
Folprechtová, Kamila ; Svobodová, Tereza (advisor) ; Jeřábek, Hynek (referee)
The bachelor thesis addresses the media representation of elderly in the Czech press and its transformation before, during, and "after" the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic was a crucial period for the media representation of elderly, as seniors were identified as one of the most at-risk groups, age became the main determining variable of risk, and there was a great wave of ageism. The research was conducted using quantitative content analysis, and media articles (n=450) were manually coded. The chi-square test was used to evaluate statistical significance. The main finding is that in all periods, aging is associated more with negative sentiment, and during the pandemic, there were statistically significant changes in its representation. Older people were significantly less associated with positive sentiment during this period, and there was a considerable increase in ambivalent sentiment (positive and negative at the same time). During the pandemic, elderly were most associated with the theme of help and security, where seniors were portrayed as passive, sick, and incompetent, and therefore must rely on other active members of society. Stereotypical and distorted representation can lead to discrimination and marginalization of seniors, both during times of crisis and beyond, and therefore,...
A Gratification Perspective of Why People Buy Herbal Tea and What do They Want from it: A Content Analysis of Tea Products' Online Reviews
Yang, Wenyu ; Jeřábek, Hynek (advisor) ; Remr, Jiří (referee)
In the three years since the spread of COVID-19, herbal medicine as a potential treatment has been presented increasingly frequently. These conversations fueled an already robust industry for herbal supplements. People can use herbal remedies without a prescription or referral from a doctor. However, several adverse consequences have been reported as a result of the unrestricted use of herbal remedies. Existing research on herbal remedies consists primarily of pharmacological and anthropological investigations; social science study on the topic is limited. This thesis questioned the social and psychological motivations behind the individuals purchase of herbal teas. The analysis of online herbal tea reviews revealed three levels of herbal tea consumption reasons: flavour and commodity attributes at the commodity level, herbal medicine effects and ingredients at the instrumental level, and personal ritual activity and lifestyle choices at the symbolic level. The thesis identifies three distinct groups of herbal tea drinkers whose consumption patterns and motivations differ dramatically. These results contribute to the public's comprehension of herbal remedies and to the government's management of this expanding market. She has applied the method in the first questionnaire and surveyed the actual choice of the respondents in the other two questionnaires. There were 392 respondents who participated in the complete questionnaire surfy and their answers were analyzed and compared with their results of Paired comparison method. The thesis also shows the accuracy of the method and the suitability of the application, as well as the ability to predict the results of undecided voters. The Paired comparison method in prediction of the results of the first round, but was able to estimate the results of the second round. The author concludes that Paired comparison method should be used in several round types of elections or those where two candidates stand against each other. There are also examined the disadvantages and risks of the method.
