Psychological aspects of pain management

Bachelor's thesis deals with pain management from psychological perspective. It covers emotional, cognitive and behavioral factors, pain coping strategies and individual differences in pain management. This work focuses on the time dimension of pain. The aim is to describe psychological aspects of acute and chronic pain management - the differences between acute and chronic pain management and the role of psychological aspects in pain chronification. Psychological aspects of pain, especially pain coping strategies, are evaluated in terms of efficiency and adaptability. The research project is designed as a prospective study investigating if there are any pain coping strategies related to pain chronification and if the coping strategies change during pain chronifiaction. Functions of Consciousness in Psychoanalysis and Analytical Psychology

Analysis of the most important functions of consciousness, considering its relations with unconsciousness in psychoanalysis and analytical psychology, is the goal of this thesis. The sources of the thesis are the tophographic and structural models of Sigmund Freud. These models enable analysing the functions of consciousness in the context of psyche structure from the psychoanalytical and psychodynamic point of view. Afterwards the thesis focuses on the extension and the functional autonomy of Ego within the structural subject theory known from authors like A. Freud, Hartmann, Brunner and others. These are the concepts of adaptation and Ego defensive functions especially. Carl Gustav Jung and his concept of the fully antonomous Ego is presented in the end of the theoretical part. The research project, that si being proposed in the very end of this thesis, deals with one of the Ego defense mechanisms - the repression. The Relationship of Social Support, Coping, Depressive Symptoms and Lokus of Control in Patients treated by Perioneal Dialysis and Hemodialysis

Patients with chronic kidney failure, given that it is impossible to undergo transplantation, have to be treated by lifelong hemodialysis (HD) via extracorporeal circulation machine 3 times a week in hospital; or by peritoneal dialysis (PD) performed by patients at home. There were a number of studies comparing quality of life between HD and PD, but there have been fewer studies covering other psychological variables. The aim of this study was to examine whether HD and PD patients differ in social support, locus of control, coping and depressive symptoms. 143 HD patients (average age 65,56; 48,3 % men, 51,3 % women) and 48 PD patients (average age 63,79; 66,7 % men, 33,3 % women) were approached by random selection. Social Integration Survey (SIS) was applied to examine social support. Locus of control was depicted on visual analog scale. Coping strategies were mapped by a short version of COPE questionnaire - Brief COPE, which was translated to Czech language for this purpose. Beck's depression inventory (BDI - II) was used to evaluate incidence of depressive symptoms. Altered States of Consciousness

This theoretical study contains a systematic analysis of altered states of consciousness. The study is based on a reflection of the qualitative altered states of consciousness, that offers some potential and attempts to describe altered states of consciousness in their complexity as well as to map all their aspects in a structured. It utilises the notion of consciousness to define the altered states of consciousness. The chosen method is to work with literary sources where an emphasis is placed on an interdisciplinary approach. The structure of the thesis is divided into three chapters. The key topic of the first chapter is an examination of the phenomenon of consciousness and interdisciplinary theories of consciousness. The second chapter is focused on the description and analysis of altered states of consciousness, concentrates on the history and methods of research of altered states of consciousness and delineates their basic characteristic and their functions. The last chapter divides the altered states of consciousness into categories and gives them a detailed description. The thesis ends with a final conclusion which brings an integration of the findings above mentioned with the focused on the second chapter. Coping of Stress and Life Events in Connection with Sense of Humor and Psychological Well-being

The theoretical part of the thesis mainly deals with the definition of humor, sense of humor, stress, life events and personal well-being and at the same time presents an overview of the basic theories related to these topics. The aim of the work is to look for individual links between mentioned topics. Primarily tries to highlight the positive impact of a sense of humor for coping with stress and life events. The research seeks to show a sense of humor as one of the coping strategies. The research seeks is based on processing the conclusions brought about a qualitative probe, based on in-depth interviews on a sense of humor and its connections with another variables. Qualitative analysis of verbal material suggests a sense of humor in connection with personal well-being and presents a sense of humor as one of the coping strategies of stress and life events. . The Posttraumatic Growth of the Professional Firefighters

This diploma thesis is focusing on the posttraumatic growth in professional fire fighters. The theoretical part deals with models of the posttraumatic growth and factors which affect this process. Another constituent of the work is a treatise about psychological aspects of the fire fighter job execution. One section of the work, the empirical section, is based on the Czech version of a questionnaire method called "Posttraumatic Growth Inventory ". It is a questionnaire that discovers the level of achieved posttraumatic growth in 5 areas; personal strength, new possibilities, relating to others, appreciation of life and spiritual change. The research sample that consisted of 100 professional firemen verified the relationship between the posttraumatic growth and other aspects of respondents' lives. The marital status, the fact if the respondent has a family, the time which passed since experiencing a difficult incident, the subjectively perceived intensity of an event, the level of distress, psychological well-being, behaviour of type A, cognitive resilience of an individual, strategy of bearing the burden of "negative view", "the concentration on a problem" and "the mineralization of threats" is not connected with the grade of obtained posttraumatic growth....

The theoretical part of the thesis mainly deals with the definitions of sense of humor, humor, stress, life events and life satisfaction and presents an overview of the most basic theories related to these topics at the same time. The aim of the work is looking for connection between the three themes. Above all, it shows the positive impact of sense of humor to cope with stress and life events. What role play a sense of humor in psychotherapy? Can psychotherapy help to improve life satisfaction? As this work was created behind the ongoing systemic psychotherapy, corresponds to the mentioned questions also. The research seeks to establish relationships between sense of humor and life satisfaction and consequently their impact on coping stress and life events. The empirical part is based on quantitative data processing, which were obtained by using several questionnaire. The results of quantitative data analysis are supplemented by qualitative observations and insights that explain conclusions of study. Based on the processed data has shown that life satisfaction increases clients during psychotherapy. However the relationship between sense of humor and life satisfaction, as well as their impact on coping stress and life events has not been empirically confirmed. Burnout Syndrome in conditions of performance-oriented society in the 21st century

The first part of this thesis is focused on the literature review that is concerned with Burnout syndrome. The work analyses the development of the burnout concept from the early start in 70th of the 20th century till present-day. It covers major topics that include the definition of the Burnout Syndrome, the difference among Burnout Syndrome and other mental states, signs, symptoms, diagnostics and phases of the Burnout Syndrome and last but least the analysis of the factors, that contribute to formation of the Burnout Syndrome. The factors are divided into two categories, the first are external and the other are internal. The second part of thesis consists of the empirical research. The research examines the difference in copying with Burnout Syndrome between the two groups, where the first group represents psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists who work with clients and the other group, that represents IT specialists, who minimally need to deal their job with people. The empirical part provides the differences between scores of these two groups in SMBM (Shirom-Melamed scale), LET (Life Engagement Test) and ICL (Interpersonal Check List). Risk factors for suicidal behaviour among czech adolescent population

The rigorous thesis "Risk Factors for Suicidal Behaviour among Czech Adolescent Population" deals with suicidality and suicidal behaviour among adolescents in the Czech Republic. The theoretical part of the thesis describes the basic terms of this topic, various approaches and understanding of this issue in the past and at present. This work also deals with the forms, methods and motives of suicidal behaviour. Furthermore, it describes the age of adolescence as an independent evolutionary period in the life of a man and analyses the risks of this life era. The theoretical part also contains a description of the epidemiology of this phenomenon and possible diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive approaches to suicidal behaviour. The empirical part of the thesis describes a research in which the goal was to determine a relation to the increase of suicidal risk and the basic dimension of the personality (using the Freiburg's Personality Inventory), social support (by the Perceived Social Support Scale) and life engagement (through the Life Engagement Test). The research sample contained 192 respondents from the senior years of grammar schools and vocational schools from Prague and Vysočina.
