Mudrák, Jiří ; Zábrodská, Kateřina ; Machovcová, K.
Relationship between PhD candidate and her/his supervisor is not only a key factor throughout the doctoral programme and its successful completion, it influences significantly further academic career. Position of PhD candidate is rather vulnerable – if supervisor abuses their power privileges, there are limited options for resistance. Our aim is to present analysis of semi-structured interviews with PhD candidates from natural sciences and humanities, who experienced different kinds of non-ethical behavior by their supervisor. Non-ethical workplace behavior is a category that describes actions such as workplace incivility, discrimination, harassment and bullying. Using thematic analysis of the interviews we identifie typical pattern of non-ethical behavior. We describe development of the relationship between student and supervisor, trigger moments and process of non-ethical behavior, possibilities for resistance and impact on PhD study of the respondents and their further academic career. We discuss how organizational climate at universities can contribute to development of non-ethical behavior, or conversely create conditions precluding power abuse in the non-equal relationship between PhD candidate and supervisor.
