Inside the glass pyramid of professionalism: Gender, age and nationality in professionalism in financial shared services centers
Frančiak, Matúš ; Kobová, Ĺubica (advisor) ; Dvořáčková, Jana (referee)
Matúš Frančiak - Inside the glass pyramid of professionalism: Gender, age and nationality in professionalism in financial shared services centers Abstract Shared service center are globally popular phenomenon providing jobs to tens of thousands of Czech residents. This thesis analyses financial shared service centers in Brno using the optics of gender as primary signifier of power and professionalism as disciplinary mechanism. The thesis understands shared service centers as a dynamic outcome of intracompany power struggles influenced by gender and national discourses. Centers transform more complex and masculine work into fragmented feminine tasks and hereby contribute to wider changes in world of work. Shared service centers structured by professionalism construct ideal work subjectivity. This subjectivity corresponds to young, Czechoslovak femininity without nonoccupational bonds. Her own interests overlap with those of company. Managements of centers represent grey area whose discipline is less transparent despite of its significant influence on functioning of shared service centers. Key words gender, age, nationality, professionalism, shared service centers, shared services center, SSC, shared services, disciplinary mechanism
Autobiography, Subjectivity, and Agency: Dorothy Day's The Long Loneliness
Pedersen, Elisabeth ; Kobová, Ĺubica (advisor) ; Lorenz - Meyer, Dagmar (referee)
Dorothy Day (1897-1980) was a progressive and revolutionary activist who dedicated her life to combating issues of war, poverty, homelessness, and oppressive capitalist policies, yet she continuously stood by essentialist notions of gender and was critical of the gender politics of Emma Goldman, and many second-wave feminist such as Betty Friedan. Therefore, this analysis provides an interpretation of the relationalities, contradictions, embodiments, and silences in Day's autobiographyThe Long Loneliness (1952) in order to gain insight into the way in which she 'frames' her 'self' as a woman amongst Cold War discourse. This analysis seeks to critically examine Dorothy's autobiography through a feminist lens which understands the act of writing an autobiography as a performative act (Smith, 1998), therefore enabling an analysis that focuses on concepts of subjectivity and agency, thus challenging essentialist notions of identity. This interpretation reveals the ways in which Day positions her subjective 'self' through discourse and how the autobiographical 'self' depicts moments of agency, resistance, and potentialities for change as she both conforms to and resists hegemonic discourse regarding femininity in order to speak with and against the public discourse surrounding her as 'Moscow Mary', thus...

Votrubová, Yvona ; Gelnarová, Jitka (advisor) ; Kobová, Ĺubica (referee)
The diploma thesis is focused on the concept of the "New Woman" in the first Czechoslovak Republic (1918-1938). The "New Woman" is understood as a discursive construct acquiring various meanings. In this work, I reveal wide range of these meanings and identify images of the "New Woman", which indicate what was hidden under this concept. The aim of the thesis is to find an answer to the question of what contents the concept was acquiring at a given time. To achieve this goal, I use critical discourse analysis to analyze materials (books, periodicals) from the era of the first Czechoslovak Republic. I also place the topic of the "New Woman" in the necessary context, which focuses on the legal and social status of women in the first Czechoslovak Republic and the origin of the concept and its elaboration by western authors. Key words: the "new woman", history, the first Czechoslovak republic, discourse, critical discourse analysis
Men's motivation to remaining in the teaching profession at primary school
Nulíčková, Lucie ; Pavlík, Petr (advisor) ; Kobová, Ĺubica (referee)
This diploma thesis called Men's motivation to remaining in the teaching profession at primary school is about men - teachers at the Czech primary schools. The main goal is to analyse the motivation to staying in the teaching profession on the basis of twelve semi-structured interviews with teachers from different primary schools. In general, the teaching profession is not so atractive for men - it is traditionally associated with lower salary, not too high prestige in society and also because the teaching profession is often called "female job". The feminization of Czech education is another big theme of this thesis. In relation to this phenomenon, possible causes, consequences and strategies, that could attract more men to the field of education and would change the actual situation, are discussed. Key words: teacher, primary school, motivation, profession, salary, prestige, feminization, strategies
The Battle for the Meaning of sexual Harassment: Analysis of Media Reactions to the Conference Legal Aspects of the "Me Too" Campaign
Pechačová, Alžběta ; Kobová, Ĺubica (advisor) ; Kolářová, Kateřina (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to find out how the frame of sexual harassment is created in the context of a discourse conflict brought about by the conference "Legal Aspects of ‛MeToo' Campaign", which took place in Prague in March 2018. My analytical sample consisted of four op- ed pieces of the protagonists of the conference and five op-ed pieces of the critics of the conference. I chose critical discourse analysis as my analytical tool to find out how each side of the discursive conflict constructs the discourse of sexual harassment. In my research I identified these discourses in the texts of the protagonists of the conference: Sexual harassment is just a sexual behaviour, Colonization of sexual harassment by legal discourse and Construction of the Subjects. In the articles of the critics of the conference I identified following discourses: Sexual harassment is an abuse of power, Construction of the expertise on sexual harassment. The protagonists of the conference co-created hermeneutical and testimonial injustice towards victims, while the conference critics co-created testimonial justice but neverthless contributed to furthering hermeneutical injustice towards victims.
Gender Inequality in the Japanese Workplace: Issues Related to the Promotion of Childcare Leave Taken by Men
Hata, Maiko ; Kobová, Ĺubica (advisor) ; Helman, Ivy Ann (referee)
Gender inequality in the workplace is a high-profile issue. Presently, Japanese women face a variety of issues in terms of gender inequality, particularly in the workplace. The concept of work-life balance has been used to understand the linkage between women's participation and advancement in the workplace and Japan's low birth rate. It has been discussed by the government, media, and companies and utilized as a mantra since the early 2000s. Since then, the government has provided and developed the state's system of childcare leave and policies to support parents raising children. The expansion of childcare leave and benefits reveals Japan's concerns about the country's decreasing birthrate and aging population. The Equal Employment Opportunity Law was implemented in 1986. Since then, the number of women gaining college degrees and participating in the labor force has increased significantly. Today in Japan, gender-based discrimination is prohibited by labor law and women have equal rights to access education and equal opportunities to work. However, gender inequality persists, such as the gender wage gap, the percentage of men taking childcare leave, and female representation in management positions. This thesis thus aims to clarify the sociopolitical and cultural backgrounds of gender inequality...

The diploma thesis deals with discursive and practical possibilities of progressive feminism in the Czech environment. The thesis discusses the current critique of feminism in neoliberalism and points to the processes of co-optation of feminist principles into the neoliberal system. Using the theory of sociologists Catherine Eschle and Bice Maiguashcy, the thesis further develops the discourse of progressive feminism, which offers a rejection of the logic of the neoliberal system and at the same time seeks alternative ways of feminist practice. Using the concept of progressive feminism, the Feminist Art Institution initiative, which seeks to bring feminist principles into institutional practice, is analyzed. The diploma thesis first analyzes feminist concepts that appear in the discursive conception of feminism of the Feminist Art Institution initiative. It also presents a case study of the practice of feminist art institutions with its conditions and consequences in a broader contextual context. The case study is based on semi-structured interviews conducted with representatives of twelve institutions at the initiative of the Feminist Art Institution. The diploma thesis offers a deeper insight into the issue of progressive feminism in Czech environment and its aim is to contribute to the debates...
Employee Resource Groups As a Tool For Achieving LGBT Equality In Corporate Environment
Švarcová, Michaela ; Kobová, Ĺubica (advisor) ; Pavlík, Petr (referee)
Employee Resource Groups (ERG) are groups of employees based on a shared identity, background, experience or interests, which are also formally established or supported by the company's management. Although their form and activities vary, their main goal is usually to support the voice of the group within the company, as well as education, awareness or counseling. Employee Resource Groups, as one of the tools of diversity management in companies, have existed in Western countries since the 1960s, yet they are a relatively new trend in the Czech environment, as they have only appeared in local corporations in the last decade. In my thesis, therefore, through semi-structured interviews, I analyze how members of seven ERGs aimed at supporting LGBT workers understand the organizational form of these groups and how they construct their importance for achieving LGBT equality. Keywords: Employee Resource Groups, employee networks, diversity management, LGBT, work.

Identity crisis from transgender's perspective
Burdová, Veronika ; Bierhanzl, Jan (advisor) ; Kobová, Ĺubica (referee)
The work aims to explore the identity of transgender on the basis of gender and trans studies. The problem is formulated here as an identity crisis, which is currently gaining more and more response. The focus of the crisis is the very situation in trans-politics, stimulated by conflicting feelings stemming from the consequences of Judith Butler's performative theory of gender, whose work has become the founding text of queer theory. Opposition is forming in this crisis, with the transgender identity facing one another as one that supports Butler's conclusions, and the transgender (subordinated to the transgender identity) side, whose subjective experience of body forces to criticize performativity and opens up thus the question of the redefinition of essentialism. The aim of this work is to examine the current crisis of identity from the perspective of trans studies with emphasis on the issue of the body, as a determining aspect of the identification of oneself and others as male or female identity. The starting point will be Judith Butler's grasp of the subject of corporeality and analysis of the critique of her approach from from the perspectives of gender and trans studies. The conclusions of this critique should outline new ways of capturing and preserving gender identity. KEYWRODS Gender,...
