Controversy of visual image in public space on an example of Lennon's Wall in Prague (From the perspective of power distribution, destruction and communication)
Kotrlá, Jitka ; Hájek, Václav (advisor) ; Váša, Ondřej (referee)
The following diploma thesis deals with image destruction in the public space, specifically focuses on its selected fragments, which can be considered as communication messages. The work provides a synchronous and diachronic analysis of the subject of the research as well as the transformation of its statuses, thus concentrating on the acquisition, transformation and extinction of the symbolic meanings of the object within the cultural- historical complex. The pattern of destruction of the image in the public space is chosen as Lennon's Wall in Prague, whose constant visual and meaningful transformation is taking place today - against the backdrop of the historical, power and cultural context. The theoretical basis is based on the analysis of change based on the concept of "discourse" and "discourse formation" by Michel Foucault, as well as on the anchoring of methodology in CDA Norman Fairclough and DHA Ruth Wodak. Keywords Visual Image in Public Space, Lennon's Wall, Linking, Discourse, Destruction, Communication, Power.
Zwischenraum and Denkraum in the context of ascent and fall in the Mnemosyne Atlas of Aby M. Warburg
Váša, Ondřej ; Petříček, Miroslav (advisor) ; Vojvodík, Josef (referee) ; Konečný, Lubomír (referee)
The doctoral thesis focuses on the Warburg's concept of thought space [Denkraum] and the related concept of artistic creation as an interface between the affections and abstract thinking [Zwischenraum], representing the key concepts of his late work (especially between the years 1920- 1929), culminating in the pictorial atlas Mnemosyne. In this context, the thesis focuses on the motive of ascent as well, and concludes that the pathos formula of ascent plays a crucial historical role in the constitution of modern Denkraum and forms one of the fundamental constitutive parameters of the thought-space, whose own metaphorical perspective is the contemporary aviation. For an adequate reflection of the historical development of this Denkraum, Warburg turns to the physical models of thought and artistic creation, including an attempt to use Einstein's theories of relativity. The key role of the motive of ascent in the constitution of Denkraum subsequently shapes this thought space within the confines of Renaissance humanism.
Aby M. Warburg and the term of pathos formula in context of his thought
Skopalová, Eva ; Stejskal, Jakub (advisor) ; Váša, Ondřej (referee)
(in English): These presented papers focus on "pathos formula" and its evolution in Aby Warburg's thought. Warburg's considerations are complex; he does not focus on a precise time period, but history as a whole, using "Nachleben", a survival of picture schemes, gestures and concepts. Pathos formula oscillates between two polarities: apollonian and dionysian. The Apollonian side stands for sublime Antique while Dionysian stands for ecstatic, instinctive, irrational. It also includes a form of neokantism, inspired by Ernst Cassierer's philosophy. These two polarities have been transformed into his opus magnum, Atlas Mnemosyne. He develops the idea of relationships between human and world as such through the symbol. One of the central aspects of pathos formula is the tension between myth and rationality. The tension of history is represented by images. Atlas Mnémosyné is Warburg's greatest work, made up of 79 plates using the pathos formula. Through images he articulated the tension of history, by gesture and concepts he revealed a suppressed or unconscious memory, which the culture carries with. The pathos formula is highly emotive, expressive, gesture forms, which we can observe through time, Nachleben, and space by migration. Memory is preserved and defines our quotidian.

Appropriation in Public Space as a Way of Improving a Quality of Life in a City: on the Example from Prague
Klodnerová, Kristýna ; Marcelli, Miroslav (advisor) ; Váša, Ondřej (referee)
The diploma thesis is focused on the phenomenon of processes of appropriation in public space. The analysis draws upon urban anthropology with the aim to point out that some appropriative tactics may help to improve a quality of life in a city. The thesis is based on the theoretical concepts of French scholars, namely Marc Augé, Michel de Certeau and Henri Lefebvre, who share the common interest in a man as the everyday user, but also the creator of public space. Another methodological tool is the qualitative criteria of public space established by Jan Gehl. After the introduction to the urban anthropology the thesis concerns with the public space itself, defining it, putting it into the practical framework and outlining the main problems of its crisis. The next part is about the processes of appropriation and their forms. In the applied part of the thesis are then described the examples of four Prague public spaces which are appropriated by their inhabitants and it is evaluated their importance for the whole city. In the last part is the theory turned into the practice in the form of micro- project in the Prague public space. Key words Appropriation, city, urban anthropology, public space, open space.
The Transformation of Karlin in the context of Marc Auge's theory of non-places
Šmídová, Markéta ; Váša, Ondřej (advisor) ; Marcelli, Miroslav (referee)
This thesis deals with the most dynamically evolving Prague district Karlin. In the context of the theory of Marc Augé about non-places, it primarily addresses the transformation of Karlin after the floods in 2002 and its consequences. For easier orientation in this area it is at first outlined the theory of Marc Augé and the history of Karlin. It is followed by the practical part, which refers to the production of non- places. Against the backdrop of the industrial heritage it refers to the conversion of industrial buildings and the creation of new administrative centers that show signs of non-places. Construction of new office centers started the process of new development of Karlin. The nature of this process and the direction Karlin is moving , is presented with concrete examples. I note in particular the changes in the structure of newly opened businesses - shops and catering facilities . In the last part of the thesis I mention the typical expression of non-place in Karlin - the underground and its surroundings. The aim is to point out that the conversion of Karlin relates to the production of non- places. Keywords : conversion, industrial buildings, Karlin, Marc Augé, non-places, office buildings, office centers, underground.
