Ernst Cassirer and ethnolinguistics
Pokorný, Jan ; Vrhel, František (advisor) ; Korecká, Zuzana (referee)
The theme of this work is the comparison of Ernst Cassirer's philosophy with the present ethnolinguistics. I addressed myself in this work to his philosophical basis, evolutionist scheme of the linguistic development and first of all to relations with the present cognitive science and their significance for modern trends of the linguistic relativism. I compare Cassirer's analysis of the linguistic form with the results of present linguistic (ethnolinguistic and psycholinguistic) research whose subject is the voicing of space, time, quantity, subjectivity, terms and syntactic relations in the languages of the non-European civilizations.
Jago and preman - controversial heroes of Indonesian history
Petrů, Tomáš ; Vrhel, František (advisor) ; Šalanda, Bohuslav (referee) ; Dubovská, Zorica (referee)
The dissertation deals with the historical development of banditry and gangsterism in Indonesia against the background of its relationship with the ruling elite. The author argues that bandits, called jago, or modern gangsters, known as preman, represented the basic pillar of power of all ruling regimes in Java from the classical Javanese kingdoms and the 163 Netherlands East Indies' colonial state to the Suharto's New Order. This pattern changed, however, with the onset of decentralisation and democratization of Indonesian politics - thugs for hire ceased to be agents of state and became a power tool of political parties and other competing interest groups. The author also shows that the regimes tried to eliminate the thugs' criminal activities by integrating them into their respective repressive systems. The general consequence of these intergrational attempts was criminalization of security forces and the state administration. The author further proves the existence of a direct historical and cultural connection between the jago and the preman. These controversial figures also share, despite a substantial time span, three essential features: cooperation with the patron on an ambivalent basis; criminal activities on the side outside this relationship, which secured profit for the elite in return for...
Woman's and men's roles in the Iban tribe in Kalimantan
Remešová, Blanka Michaela ; Vrhel, František (advisor) ; Pargač, Jan (referee) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee)
The doctoral thesis studies woman's and men's roles in the Iban tribe in Kalimantan. As a result of the growing influence of the majority society, these crofters, originally living in the heart of the primeval forest, have undergone many changes in the last 20 years. They have to cope with a different lifestyle and values hectically imposed upon them to a large extent. This process influences the structure of the whole society, and affects also the traditional system of male and female roles. Through deep study and analysis of female and male activities, I have studied penetrability of the assigned roles, which start to appear as impaired or non-functional, and which determine the creation of new structures.

Islamophobia in the Czech Republic: the analysis of local press in the period 1996-2005
Vesecký, Jiří ; Vrhel, František (advisor) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee) ; Matějů, Martin (referee)
In this summary I'd like to recapitulate the structure of this work, in particular the bindings between its parts. In the introduction I've defined islamophobia and relevant terms and presented possible ways of its division. A certain ambiguousness of the word "islamophobia" results from the fact that it's composed of two somewhat different parts. First one is the aversion to Islam and the second is the aversion to Muslims as people, especially immigrants. Both these parts are closely related and are often inseparable. That's why it isn't appropriate to use two separate terms. Nevertheless the difference of these two parts is in many ways similar to the difference of the terms xenophobia and racism (or neoracism). My research implies that in Czech press, the first option, i.e. the negative stereotypization of Islam as a whole, is much more numerous. On the other hand Halliday's concept of division of islamophobia into "strategic" and "populist" is based on historical context and as such is suitable mainly for the assessment of prevailing motivations of islamophobia on the national or larger level. This is also one of the reasons why I presented the history of Muslim presence in our territory, which implies that in Czech republic, contrary to the majority of other European countries, the "strategic"...

I am not this body: body and sacred self among Czech Hare Krishnas
Klepal, Jaroslav ; Vrhel, František (advisor) ; Skupnik, Jaroslav (referee)
Since the 1990s the question of religious "cults", "sects" and '''new religious movements" (NRMs) general1y, which entered the social space of the Czech post-communist state with a desire to obtain rights and authorities that the state legislation has ordinarily circumscribed to historically recognized churches and religious groups, has been debated. These debates met an increase in the precautions of state policies, redefining a relationship between the state and religion. These debates also met an increase in anti-cult movements, founded by ex-members of NRMs together with theologians, psychiatrists, and social workers, who attempt to revea1 and neutralize the "unhealthy control" and "pathological personality disorders" among NRMs members. And finally, these debates met an increasing interest in different academic fields where scholars discovered in NRMs a new subject for both their theoretical speculations and empirical researches. Scholars have mainly considered the issue of defining NRMs, the issue of their proper typologization, and, more empirically, the issue of forming ideational and ideological systems of NRMs. The nature of these religious and "pseudo-religious" systems has been discussed predominantly, followed by debates about how various concepts of these systems are related, and how these...
