Framing of the Turów Case in Regional Media
Pištorová, Barbora ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to analyze the framing of coal mining in the Turów case in news coverage in regional Czech daily newspapers, using a qualitative content analysis of media outputs. The thesis consists of four main parts. In the theoretical part, the thesis summarizes agenda-setting theory, defines the concept of framing, as well as a brief typology and approaches to identifying frames, and describes framing in news reporting. It also offers an overview of the studies focused on the framing of environmental topics by the news media and specifically on coal mining. This is followed by a brief history and development of the Turów case and a methodological section that defines the selected and analyzed media content, but also identifies the risks of this research. Grounded theory and two basic types of coding were chosen to perform the qualitative analysis: open and axial. With their help, the framing used in news coverage of coal mining in the regional media was described, and the identified frames and attributes of the coal mining were subsequently compared with previously conducted studies. The work thus offers an overview of how the media framed coal mining in the Turów case and offers insight into this debate.

Trump vs. Biden - Which side chose Czech TV's stations?
Kratochvíl, Michal ; Křeček, Jan (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
The US presidential election is undoubtedly the most important foreign policy event regularly covered by the Czech media. In the case of the latter, the battle for the White House became one of the main topics of autumn 2020. All three main national broadcasters - TV Nova, CT and TV Prima - joined the battle for viewers. For the first time in history, the election results were broadcast simultaneously on these three TV stations. But what was the practice in the Czech media. In the United States, it is quite standard for media houses to lean towards one of the candidates, that the coverage is pro-Democratic or pro-Republican. This thesis examined how this phenomenon manifested itself in Czech TV stations. Thus, the research questions focused on the number of reports on each candidate, their tone, and the total time devoted to the election itself and to both candidates. Based on the data collection, the thesis assessed that TV stations did not give equal space to both candidates. By far more space was given to Donald Trump at the expense of Joe Biden. Moreover, Trump was more often portrayed in a negative sense. In this respect, Czech Television was the least balanced Czech TV station, while TV Prima was the best. However, it in turn offered the least American election coverage, with TV Nova having...
Analysis of media coverage in selected Czech media concerning The War on Terror
Hlosek, Alexander G. ; Horký, Petr (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
My bachelor thesis focused on the Afghanistan withdrawal of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces. Veterans of this conflict heavily criticized the process of withdrawing troops. However, some politicians, including the American President Biden, labelled the withdrawal as a success. The purpose of my thesis is to determine how the Afghanistan withdrawal was portrayed in the Czech Republic. I selected two news websites (iDNES.cz and Novinky.cz). Due to the amount of content, I focused my analysis on a specific time period: 08.25.2021 - 08.31.2021. With the use of key words, I determined if the majority of content was positive, negative or neutral. My findings show that negative content exceeded positive content. The negative key word "chaos" was used most often on both news websites. The analysis is not focused on the withdrawal of Czech troops. The purpose is to analyze content concerning NATO. Content concerning the withdrawal of Czech forces was considered as neutral. Apart from the analysis I studied all content concerning the Afghanistan withdrawal on news websites iDNES.cz and Novinky.cz published during August and September 2021. Furthermore, I have observed the Afghanistan war and been in close contact with combat veterans, constantly receiving their opinion on the withdrawal...

The results of the analysis are interpreted and placed in the context of the research, while answering the research questions of the thesis.
Analysis of the Kalvoda affair in articles from Lidové noviny and Deník Právo in the years 1996 - 1997
Novotný, Ondřej ; Groman, Martin (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
The thesis deals with the well - known affair of the top ODA politician and the Minister of Justice Jan Kalvoda, who resigned from all his public positions in 1996 and left the top politics. Using the method of qualitative analysis, the work focuses on the resonance of this act in the articles of large domestic newspapers Právo and Lidové noviny and examines how the phenomenon, which until then had no parallel in Czech politics, was approached. Part of the work is a brief look at the development of the Civic Democratic Alliance, its top personalities and achievements during Kalvod's presidency, a medallion about Jan Kalvod, the main research evaluation of selected newspaper articles that began immediately after Kalvoda's resignation and culminated in the composition of his party as chairman in 1997. The whole work was written primarily on the basis of book sources dealing with ODA and subsequently through the study of major newspaper articles from the period 1996-97. Each chapter of the research part ends with the comparation and in the very conclusion there is a reflection on the whole case through the eyes of the author and its comparison with other political affairs.
Discoursive analysis of Czech government communication about COVID-19 in 2020
Rys, Filip ; Hanzal, Jaromír (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
Many people criticised the communication of the Czech Government during a pandemic in 2020. This thesis analyses government communication and its interpretation in agenda-setting, securitisation and narrativisation. The thesis also contains an analysis of politicians' interviews in media. The diploma thesis consists of a discursive analysis of the government's press conferences in 2020. On the results of the analysis were conducted, discoursive models. Models are used to define how the government communicated the problem of covid-19. The thesis continues with the analysis of agenda-setting, in which it was clear that the government successfully set its agenda in media. On results of the agenda-setting analysis was conducted securitisation analysis. The analysis shows at least one significant correlation between the government's specific securitisation speech act and how people perceived pandemic threats. The study of politicians' interviews in media showed that politicians hold a consistent communication style even if they were not at official press conferences. Connecting line of government's communication was to minimalise every doubt using a phrase that they did maximum. In every circumstance, they tried to present to the public, that was done everything possible.

This diploma thesis deals with the Czech parliamentary elections 2021 in the context of selected foreign media. The main goal of the work is to map the foreign media space in connection with the Czech autumn elections. Four research questions and hypotheses are linked to the aim of the thesis. Research questions and hypotheses deal with the range that has been devoted in selected articles to political leaders, political entities, but also personalization. The beginning of the work introduces the reader to the area of research and further introduces selected theoretical concepts related to the topic. Analysis of the use of social networks in the government communication of Zuzana Čaputová as the President of the Slovak Republic
Poliaková, Zuzana ; Shavit, Anna (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis is focused on the analysis of political communication of the President of the Slovak Republic Zuzana Čaputová on selected social networks. The aim of the thesis is to map the characteristic features of communication on individual platforms used by the President in her political communication. Similar or different elements occurring on the platforms will also be captured, while attention will also be paid to the communicated thematic areas themselves. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the definition of the research area, which inevitably presupposes, first of all, a theoretical definition of the concept of political communication and its placement in the context of new media at the same time with the definition of selected trends in the field of modern political communication. Part of the theoretical background is also putting it into context in terms of the role of the President within the Slovak Republic. The theoretical anchoring is followed by an introduction of the chosen methodology, which is followed by the final passage of the thesis, in which the communicative activity of the President on selected social networks during three pre-selected and typologically different periods is observed and examined in the form of a content analysis. The interpretation of the...
Radio broadcasting as a community tool of urban subcultur
Míkovcová, Eliška ; Maršík, Josef (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
This diploma thesis aims to describe and explain the phenomenon of the community radio broadcasting. Despite the fact, that this sector has not been implemented in the Czech media system to supplement the dual system of public and private stations, broadcasting of this type does exist. As a subject of my case study I chose the internet radio StreetCulture as I consider it to be a unique example within the Czech media market. StreetCulture proves its specificity with a very wide range of contents. It acts as a platform for a large number of different communities and it also interconnects the participants within the public space StreetBar. The analytical part of the thesis investigates how this radio station fulfils four basic dimensions of community media as defined by the media theorist Nico Carpentier: community aspect, alternative aspect, civil aspect and rhizomatic aspect. For each of these specifics I tried to demonstrate how it relates to the StreetCulture radio station concerning both the organization and content of the broadcast and how it is reflected in various non-broadcasting activities of StreetCulture. The aim of this study is not to draw general conclusions which could be applied to other community stations in the Czech Republic. It rather offers a detailed insight into the...
